| Feng12-24-04, 11:49 AM | Hey everyone! Happy holidays! I ran into a situation for the first time in a long time last weekend running a game. A PC died in combat and the rest of the group was forced to withdraw and return to their base. Once there, they sought out a cleric to cast true resurrection on the dead PC. I thought about cost and turned to the Arms and Equipment Guide from 3.0, where it lists the cost of the spell at 6 thousand odd gp. The PC's paid this amount, realizing it was a lot to pay. Later I looked up the spell itself and the material component in 3.5 is a diamond worth 25000 gp!! How can the cost of the spell for someone else to cast be 6 grand and if you cast it yourself its 25 grand?! Is this a new component for 3.5, therefore making the 3.0 book inaccurate? Seems like even when the PC cleric reaches a level he can cast the spell at, they are still better off bringing him to a spellcaster willing to do the dirty work for a quarter of the price.... If this is accurate, does anyone have any advice on how I should explain this to the group in a way that makes sense?! |

| Feng12-24-04, 12:27 PM | What was the cost of it 3.0? That way I could extrapolate the cost of true resurrection in 3.5. Thanks |
| BloodSpill12-24-04, 12:28 PM | There is a normal formula for figuring out the cost of a spell The cost of the service (or spell level x caster level x fixed cost) for a 9th level spell (17 x 9 x 10) + The cost of the material component (25,000) + 5 times the XP cost (in this case, 0) = 26530gp. This is why people try not to DIE. ;) In 3.0 it was worth at least 17*9*10+5000. = 6530gp. |

| Feng12-24-04, 11:28 PM | How does knowing the cost in 3.0 help you extrapolate the cost in 3.5? At best, you could compare the two. Actually I could extrapolate it if I knew the material costs for 3.0 since I have the price for 3.0 and the material component cost for 3.5 Kinda like algebra....you remember that? But in the Christmas spirit, ill take your comment as innocently as possible and not as an unnecessary jab. Happy Holidays |
