| Ramble10-01-06, 06:44 AM | Can anyone clarify for a dummy like me what costs and the like go into making a golem with a golem manual? Using the Clay golem for the example... Golem Manual: A golem manual contains information, incantations and magical power that help a character to craft a golem. The instructions therein grant a +5 competence bonus on skill checks made to craft the golem’s body. Each manual also holds the prerequisite spells needed for a specific golem, effectively grants the builder use of the Craft Construct feat during the construction of the golem, and grants the character an increase to her caster level for the purpose of crafting a golem. Any golem built using a golem manual does not cost the creator any XP, since the requisite XP are “contained” in the book and “expended” by the book during the creation process. The spells included in a golem manual require a spell trigger activation and can be activated only to assist in the construction of a golem. The cost of the book does not include the cost of constructing the golem’s body. Once the golem is finished, the writing in the manual fades and the book is consumed in flames. When the book’s ashes are sprinkled upon the golem, it becomes fully animated. Clay Golem Manual: The book contains animate objects, bless, commune, prayer, and resurrection. The reader may treat her caster level as two levels higher than normal for the purpose of crafting a clay golem. The book supplies 1,540 XP for the creation of a clay golem. Moderate conjuration, divination, enchantment, and transmutation; CL 11th; Craft Construct, creator must be caster level 11th, animate objects, commune, prayer, resurrection; Price 12,000 gp; Cost 2,150 gp + 1,712 XP; Weight 5 lb. And the actual Clay creation of: Construction A clay golem’s body must be sculpted from a single block of clay weighing at least 1,000 pounds, treated with rare oils and powders worth 1,500 gp. Creating the body requires a DC 15 Craft (sculpting) check or a DC 15 Craft (pottery) check. CL 11th; Craft Construct, animate objects, commune, resurrection, caster must be at least 11th level; Price 40,000 gp; Cost 21,500 gp + 1,540 XP. So with the book, a ninth level (9+2 from the manual to reach the 11 required) caster could a clay golem, not having to pay any XP. However does he only need to pay the cost of making the body (1500gp of rare oils and powders and the cost of getting the clay if he doesn't locate his own supply), or is the cost the full 21,500gp? Ramble. |

| Ramble10-02-06, 12:04 AM | Not really :P What I am looking for is how much of the total golem cost is the body cost not supplied by the book? In the example of the clay golem, is it the 21500, or just the 1500? Is making the book a way to burn xp to lower the gold cost of making the golem. Ramble. |
| utilitarian10-02-06, 12:23 AM | Well since the book only says it DOESN"T cover the cost of the body, we can assume that it covers everything else, and the only thing you need to buy is the body components (1500) |

Not a bad price: 20gp per pound for top quality clay). |

| risner10-02-06, 10:25 PM | Seems a waste to bother with the book then. . The book provides Craft Construct. If you have the feat Craft Construct, you wouldn't want the book. If you are missing the feat Craft Construct, you may feel paying money for the book better than burning a feat. |
