| MADMURRAY12-11-05, 11:18 AM | Could someone cast polymorph any object to make a small rock into a giant boulder or turn a coin into a castle? Could someone throw a pebble into the sky above a target and then another person cast polymorph any object on the pebble to turn it into a castle, causing the castle to fall on the target smashing him for unfathomable damage? I realize that the spell, if it works would only last for 20 minutes or so but that would be more than enough time. |

| Black Mantha12-11-05, 12:17 PM | Somewhere in the rules or FAQ its says that the change from polymorph spells in gradual. They use the example that you can't kill someone by polymorphing their hat into a boulder. You also can't polymorph an object larger than 100 cu. ft. / level, (that's around a 4.5 feet cube,) and I'd consider it logical you can't change some into larger either. Then the spell's effect would make the tharget an illegal target for the spell. |

| MarkB12-11-05, 01:54 PM | I would consider the spell's Target entry (up to 100 cu. ft. / level) to also limit the volume of its result, so you could get a boulder, but not a full-size castle. And as mentioned, the effect isn't instantaneous - an aware person could react to it. |
| MADMURRAY12-11-05, 06:56 PM | " a castle is not a single object, so no you cannot change a pebble into a castle" Yeah, well neither is a marionette and that is listed as an example. Moreover, the 100 ft per level would be reasonable for a small castle (call it a keep, for my purposes the spell was done by a 18th level wiz so 1800 cubic sqare feet, so a small keep). Lastly, I don't know where in the rules it says a polymorph is gradual. I know the 9th level spell is a free action, so some polymorph's must be gradual but even if the polymorph any object is not an instant, it seems it would still take place within a round or something in the text of the spell would say something to the effect. Because, if the effects were gradual, a character who was being turned into a pebble would be able to act before the change was complete wouldn't he and there is no mention of that. |

A cube containing 1800 cubic feet is about twelve feet wide in each dimension. Lastly, I don't know where in the rules it says a polymorph is gradual. It's not gradual, but it's not instant either. The change would take place in the course of you casting the spell, which takes a little over three seconds. |
| JL371212-31-05, 04:19 AM | The amount of time taken to convert it is mute, considering if you won initiative and went first, it being a standard action means it turns into whatever you want before the victim gets a chance to act (on his turn). Although just like a dragons crush it would warrant a reflex save and like all saves would probably be the same as the spell that caused the effect. Also size would be irrelevant isn't it the literal weight of the object that matters, directly effecting how much damage it causes, I'm sure you could turn the pebble in a lump of pure iron, granite, silver, or even glass. The type of material would effect the weight of it as well and determine the damage. What if the object instead if being a boulder shaped or circle was in the form of a lance pointed down, would it require an attack role or effect the amount of damage. Although the latter is probably pointless, who is to say that it should be ignored altogether. Even under the druid sample what if the pebble become a blue whale (dependant on the caster level) how do you judge effects (damage, saves, etc.)? |
| Seeker9512-31-05, 09:21 AM | The amount of time taken to convert it is mute,Just a pet peeve of mine... While maker of the point may indeed be mute, a point is moot. moot adj. Of no practical importance; irrelevant We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion. |
