| Tha Sage03-19-04, 07:13 PM | I was considering about discussing with my DM the creation of a type of magic item that essentially does this... <Name of item>- This item grants its wearer an enhancement bonus to Strength of +X for determining encumbrance. Caster Level: ? Price: ? Edit: forgot to specify what the enhancement bonus was for :banghead: Would letting classes that usually have lower strength carry more loot be unbalancing in any way? Im inclined to say no, and I hope that this could be fairly cheap. What do you think? |
| Seeker9503-19-04, 11:53 PM | It isn't a matter of not being balanced. It's just that right now, the only thing that links to encumbrance is strength. Either you are increasing strength (duplicating bull's strength) or you're not. There are many ways a low strength character can carry more stuff: bag of holding Heward's handy haversack Tenser's floating disk Bull's strength Mule or donkey Hireling: Porter Wagon / Pushcart |
| TieraStarr03-20-04, 12:43 AM | I've considered a slow introduction of subabilities (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=204792) by using magic items that merely boost a subability instead of a whole ability. The Strength/Stamina subability applies to carrying capacity, climb skill, and swim skill - so a magic item to simply boost Strength/Stamina would only give a benefit for those three areas, and would not effect lifting and dragging, melee attack modifier, damage modifier, break DC checks, jump skill. Just an idea you may want to consider. Edit: changed above link to a post on these boards since my host appears to be down. |

Though he has the proficiencies to wear the Heavy Armor, he can pretty much only carry the armor before he starts taking even more movement penalties for encumberance via-medium load. My cleric is wearing a mithral breastplace(which is incredibly expensive in the game I play) and holding a Falichon and a Shield, and skirts into only being a light load by about three or four pounds. Which is somewhat annoying. | Ironcleaver03-20-04, 02:03 AM | what is your clerics str? a set of Mithral full plate has half the weight of normal plate, 25lbs.. thats pretty light stuff (pg 284 DMG 3.5).. well, really, anything made out of Mithral is half the weight of steel.. have you thought about getting your armor/weapons enchanted to be lighter? say with craft arms/armor feat, and levitate spell? it might count as a +1 or +2.. or maybe have a set of armor made out of Darkwood (pg 283 MDG) and have a druid enchant it with the Ironwood spell? how low do you want to get your total weight? |

My cleric's strength without ioun stones is 13(15 with). At 13, he has a light loadof 50 lbs. He's going to be wearing a Mithril breastplate, a falichon and a large steel shield, which is 46 even by itself. Throw in all the random items that you find in adventuring and Im well over the limit. However, getting my breatsplate made in mithril is probbably going to cost me about 18,800 for a medium armor because of my DM's campaign setting (metal is rarer) I think heavy armor gets somewhere around 40k. My goal is to be able to wear Half-Plate and wield everything while maintaining a light load. The enchantment for lightness wojuld be nice. Thanks everyone for the help. TieraStarr: Thanks. The system is cool, but a little bit too involved to fix this problem without making others. |

Get a donkey or a mule or a porter to carry your other stuff. Then you only wear your armor, carry your holy symbol and wield your shield and weapon. If you need to get something else, use your caddy. |
| ShadeShinobi03-20-04, 11:25 AM | How about "Belt of the Ox", medium wondrous item, your load is considered one size smaller (heavy to medium, medium to light, light to no load at all) |

I have a portable hole now, which fixes some of my problems. That belt of the Ox idea sounds neato, though after looking at the Character Optimization board Hulking Hurler Builds, it could be rather broken... |
| Seeker9503-20-04, 12:51 PM | If you need to improve your load capacity, imrpove your strength. The means of doing so are already easily accessible. (Why try to reinvent the wheel? or in this case, the +2/+4/+6 to strength?) |
| Ironcleaver03-20-04, 02:04 PM | its a hard choice, I too play a cleric with the same problem, but my character has a base 15 in str, which helps.. armor, shield, and a weapons dose weight a lot, but all my extra junk is in a bag of holding.. now, as long as my DM keeps me away form water I'll be safe :) maybe go the opposite way, and go with "vow of poverty" from book of exalted deeds.. ;) |

(Why try to reinvent the wheel? or in this case, the +2/+4/+6 to strength?) Frugatlity I suppose. Mise well go ahead and be a high-roller in melee too I guess. I scrounge up enough to pay for the belt. *shrug* |
| BlackFiend03-20-04, 03:16 PM | The truth is, you are being unrealistic. Don't look to spend so much cash for something that a little common sense will fix. You humping too much? Are you a pack rat? Can't spare to go without carrying a crowbar in that backpack of yours? 1. Pass around stuff to other PCs who are humping less. Everyone in the party doesn't need to carry 50' of silk rope. Obviously you aren't the one! 2. All the great Templars of old had a squire. Heck...even the Man of La Mancha had a friend to help carry gear. A common porter for your adventures only costs copper a day and adds to your roleplay. Even if you paid him a gold a day, thats only 365 gp a year. That belt would cost you how much THOUSAND gold? Even if he just carried your food, rope, and adventuring gear for short ventures, its worth it and he can help be a personal servant cooking food, preparing your bedding, watch the horses, send a message back to town, whatever. 3. Every horse has a saddle and saddle bags, right? What the heck you have in it? 4. Go without it. See what happens. If you come across an ancient tomb and you curse yourself for not having the crowbar...so be it. Look around for one...there is bound to be one around or an improvised one. There...I saved you gold. Use that gold to improve some other aspect. Better equipment, better shield, or a new enchantment on one of those things. |
