Should I allow this? he has offered this he's a tenth level sorcerer, and can use3 5th level spells 0- 9 1- 8 2- 7 3- 6 4- 6 The first number is the level of spells, and the second number is the number of uses. |
| syrinth12-30-05, 05:46 PM | You can always use a higher level spell slot to cast a lower level spell. If you need to cast a level 4 spell for example you could burn a lvl 5 slot. |
| Lord shadow3512-31-05, 01:17 AM | This is true! |
| Ruhl-Than Sage12-31-05, 02:06 AM | Allowing him to sacrifce one higher level spell for multiple lower level ones would be an unfair advantage, the equivilent of using a spell point system. He can use a higher level slot to cast a lower level spell but only on a one for one basis. Even if you did want to allow him to do this the rates you quoted are ludicris. Break it down into points based on minimum caster level. So: 1st=1 2nd=3 3rd=5 4th=7 5th=9 6th=11 7th=13 8th=15 9th=17 Convert all his spell slots into spell points. Of course this increases his versatility tremendously, so you'll have to reduce the number of points to help conpensate. Either that or make him pay for his CL dependant effects like a psion has to. |

Horribly weak, especially when you remember you can cast lower level spells with higher level slots. If he REALLY wants to do that, give him at least +1 3rd & +1 4th level spell to what he asked for and 1 spell more known per spelllevel. Then at least he has more versatility. |

| Nom01-01-06, 03:53 AM | Are you asking about "spells known" or "spells per day" ("spell slots")? If slots: "A spellcaster always has the option to fill a higher-level slot with a lower-level spell" (PH pg 178). So he can use his 3 (+ Cha?) 5th level slots to cast any spell he knows. Even if he doesn't want his 5th level spell/s, the slots are particularly useful for casting metamagic versions of lower level spells. If spells known: The rules don't specifically allow it, but there's nothing imbalancing about learning a lower level spell in place of a higher level one. As for trading 1 for many, you might want to allow it, but will need to consider the balance implications. I'm inclined to recommend that you don't; it creates more tracking for neglible actual difference. |
