Can anyone tell me if there are rules on counterspelling a spell from an invisible caster?

There was an incident of one caster having up Duelward, and the DM telling him he couldnt use Dispell Magic to counter a spell from an invisible caster (NPC) because there wouldnt be a target. Though if Dispell Magic was done with the radius burst, it should still counterspell the casted invocation? Any info on this subject would be great!!

Many Thanks.

To counterspell, you must target the caster. If you don't have some way to exactly locate the caster, you can't counterspell.

Are there written rules for this, where can I read them?

From the SRD section on counterspells (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/castingSpells.htm%23counterspells):
To use a counterspell, you must select an opponent as the target of the counterspell.

Additionally, from the description of Dispel Magic (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/dispelMagic.htm):
Counterspell
When dispel magic is used in this way, the spell targets a spellcaster and is cast as a counterspell.

And from the SRD section on targetting a spell (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/spellDescriptions.htm%23targetorTargets) :
You must be able to see or touch the target, and you must specifically choose that target.

It says nothing about using the radius burst from Dispel Magic as a counterspell, so I guess it cant be used.

Or just ready to toss a metamagicked area damage spell into the general area the moment he starts casting and hope to disrupt his spellcasting by forcing a massive con check? :P
