How does it work?

I know, sounds like a stupid question, but I simply couldnīt grasp the concept of counterspelling in DnD. And I even understood the Rolemaster magic system... ;)

if you go before any spell caster in the round, you may Ready vs Spell casting. This means that whenever anyone casts a spell that you are aware of, you get to interupt their spell casting.

One way to interupt the spell is to make the spellcaster fail a concentration check. I won't get into that, since you asked about counterspelling.

The other way to interupt the spell is to counterspell. First thing you do is a make a spellcraft check to see if you identify the spell. (I think it's DC = 20 + spell level? or 15 + spell level?) If you identified the spell, there are 3 ways to counterspell.

1) to cast the same spell as the person you are counterspelling. Only if you have this spell prepared for the day.

2) cast a counter ot the spell. certain spells have a counter. Haste-Slow, Daylight-Darkness,, etc. You have to have the counter spell prepared too.

3) Cast Dispel magic. This one does not automatically counter the spell. You have to make a targeted dispel magic check. read the dispel magic entry for how to do that.

make sense?

Thank you, isnīt that hard after all... :)

But are you saying bards and sorcerers can only counterspell by using "dispel magic"?

Spontaneous casters don't have to only use Dispel Magic. They can also use the above methods.
