| CyberGaston11-02-05, 11:25 AM | Sadly, yes... But you can buy a wand with a small amount of charge in it for a reduced cost. If you are a Wizard with Scribe scroll, I suggest you make your own scrolls. It will cost you less that way. My girlfriend is playing a Dwarf Wizard (Evoker) in my RPGA game and she has a tone of scoll each game. With the feats Scribe Scroll and Extraordinary Artisan, her scroll are very cheap to buy !! She's never out of spell to cast. She's annoying for a DM... hihi. So I give you this trick to annoy your own DM...hahahah. :) |
| Deificus11-02-05, 12:23 PM | Since you can only buy wands from the DMG, then that means there are VERY few wands you could buy (no scorching ray). That wouldn't be bad except that having craft wand, and extraordinary artisan means they cost 2.5 times the normal cost (5x for being consumable, and 1/2 for feats). So a single wand of fireballs costs over 28,000 gold. Sure you can cast a practically unlimited number of fireballs, but only at 5d6, and for a HUGE price (if you are 11th level). Also, there is no rule that says you can purchase them with less charges. You can purchase any non-restricted magic item from the DMG, but the wands in there come with 50 charges, and there are no wands of scorching ray, righteous might, etc. |
| Frobi-Wan Kenobi11-02-05, 12:58 PM | Also, there is no rule that says you can purchase them with less charges. Unless you are a fastplay wizard then you get wands of magic missile with 10 charges for 750 gp. I think many players have used this as justification for buying 10 charge wands. |
| CyberGaston11-02-05, 01:50 PM | Are you sure of that ? I don't think that because a particular staff is not listed in the DMG that you can't have them. If the spell is either in the Player's Guide, the Eberron Campaign Setting or in your Expansion List, I can not see why you should not be allowed to have it as an item. Does that mean that you can't have a potion, a scroll or a wand of Repair Light damage? I don't think so. That would be very stupid. Is there confirmation of what you are saying in an official document ? For the number of charge in a wand, I admit there is no rule in the DMG that allows that (unless i'm mistaken) but nonetheless, if its good for a Fastplay Character, it's good enough for me. None of my players have ever bought any wands (with 50 or less charges) but if it came up, i would allow it. |

Crafting feats only reduce the costs by .75 not .50 per the Campaign rules. So consumables would cost 3.75 times as much as normal prices. |

| Wavester11-03-05, 11:08 AM | Ahh I missed that part. Good catch |
| DerekSTheRed11-07-05, 07:05 PM | I don't think they updated the campaign standards to reflect the fact that pc's now have access to wands. In the LotGR campaign standards it says that wands and staffs cost five times as much, but you can buy/create with less charges. Like get a wand with 1/5th the charges at 5 times the cost for easy math. Normally I wouldn't steal rules from another campaign's campaign standard. However, since the fastplay characters have wands with less charges, it would seem to imply that rule was intended to be in the MOH_CS when the level bump took into effect. Derek |
| Tiberien11-08-05, 11:47 PM | Ah, but if you look at the DMG, page 214, under "Charges, Doses and Multiple Uses" you will find that "the value of the partially used item is proportional to the number of charges left". In their example, "A wand with 20 charges ... is worth 40% of the value of a fully charged wand (with 50 charges). That section gives you prices for "used" wands, multiply by five at 10 charges and you spend the DMG list price. Less for those that can create their own. They regenerate and 10 charges is a good number for one 4 hour session. |
