Hello all,
I'm an old veteran of the venerable Living City Campaign back in the (not so) good old days of 2nd edition as well as Living Greyhawk when it first started. Unfortunately I've been away from the RPGA for about 4 years and things have passed me by.

The good news is that I'm jumping back in and will be attending the Indy Gen Con here in a couple of months. This will be my first foray into the world of Eberron and the Mark of Heroes campaign, and so thought I might ask some advice of the experts.

I'm trying to decide on what kind of character I want to play, and I want to make sure that I don't make a "cookie cutter" character that is played by every third person at the convention (I can't tell you how many elven twin short sword weilding fighters I saw back in Living City...). So, with that in mind here are a few ideas I've been tossing around in my head. You'll notice that I tend to go a bit against type, while still retaining a solid feel for racial/class archetypal themes. I'm very big on the ROLEplaying (vs. rollplaying) aspect of D&D, so background themes and concepts are important to me. Anyway, please provide feedback first on if 'everyone' plays this type of character, and also if you think no one would want this at the table because it's just a bad concept. All feedback is appreciated.

1) Valenar Elf Spiked Chain specialist. Low str, high dex and int fighter focusing on combat reflexes to take advantage of reach, and improved disarm. Not the usual (I think) weapon choice for Valenar; concept is that his chosen ancestor was one of the first innovators of the double scimitar, so he is following that path by mastering something different and unique.

2) Warforged ranger/fighter ranged specialist. Inspired by modern day Marine Corps snipers. Created by House Cannith as an elite surveillance, reconnaisance and long range sniper/assassin.

3) Talenta Halfling Paladin/Halfling Outrider. Appealing, but I'm guessing there are a lot of Halfling Outriders out there.

4) Shifter Monk. Ashamed of his bestial nature, he entered the monastic life hoping to overcome his heritage. Instead, he learned that the way to true inner peace and enlightenment is through embracing who you are and learning to control your nature, instead of letting it control you.

4) Monk/Sorcerer Enlightened Fist. Using the Ascetic Mage feat from Complete Adventurer. Still a new thought, but a monk able to cast Mage Armor and Cat's Grace on himself is intriguing.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for your help. See you at Gen Con.

I am new to the RPGA, and therefore new to Mark of Heroes, but I've been involved with Eberron since it first hit the shelves in our area. Here's a couple of thoughts on your concepts:

1) One thing to keep in mind about the Valenar is that most live, fight and die on their horses, so you'll probably be using that spiked chain from the back of a warhorse. Not that there's anything wrong with that mind you; take Imp. Grapple and you may just end up dragging enemies along behind you while they beg for mercy.

2) One shot, one kill. Something all warforged can understand and live by.

3) Halfling outriders haven't been a popular choice where I've played... but that was before halflings rode dinosaurs. Now they're infinitely more cool.

4) I DM'd with a shifter monk. They get mean. Killing machine mean. Especially when they become ninja.

5) I'd also like to take shield for a nice bonus to AC, Alex. And don't forget owl's wisdom or bull's strength.
