Question about darkwood/silver/cold iron [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-30-05, 03:52 PM In MoH campaign standards 1.2, p. 6 says "Starting characters may also purchase darkwood, cold iron, and alchemical silver items."

On p. 9, it says "Items found in the Player's Handbook, Eberron Campaign Setting 'Chapter 6', and a small set of items found in the Dungeon Master's Guide (alchemical silver, cold iron, and darkwood weapons) are unlimited items."

Is this accurate? This means that a starting character could have a darkwood shield, but buying one later would require you to place it on your expansion list (because it is not a weapon).

Unlimited items are those that any character can take - even if the price of the item is greater than the GP limit for their current level. Limited items have to stay under the GP limit

So, yes it is accurate.

And any items (example: armor, wands, wonderous items, etc.) that aren't on the restricted lists, can be placed on a character's expansion list not just weapons.

06-30-05, 07:49 PM I believe that in this context the word 'items' is taken to be a superset of 'weapons' since weapons are but one type of item in the world of D&D.

Not-newly-created character must place it on expansion list because a shield is not a "weapon"

07-01-05, 06:27 AM Darkwood, cold iron, and alchemical silver items have nothing to do with the expansion list. The expansion list holds items (and feats, and other stuff) from secondary sources that the PC can purchase once their GP limit is high enough. All the items you listed are from the DMG, which is a core/primary source. They are unlimited in that you can purchase them at any time, even if the cost of them item is greater than your GP limit.

You can buy them at first level, you can buy them whenver. You just have to be able to afford them.

07-01-05, 12:57 PM Perhaps what constitutes an "expansion list" could be clarified in this fashion in the future?

I was under the impression that mithral and adamantine items would have to go on an expansion list because they are not included under items that a character can purchase automatically.

In other news, this rule supplement really needs an editor.
