So, I like the Racial substitution levels for a Kalashtar Soulknife (out of Races of Eberron IIRC) and was looking at then moving in to the Atavist (if is spelled that correctly) from the same book. Do I have to wait until 5th level to unlock the sub levels? Are they unlocked as part of the card that lets you be a Kalashtar? Is it worth taking 4 levels of fighter first (weapon focus, weapon spec, 2 weapon fighting, etc) then get into soulknife?

I'm doing something similar with my character; he's a Kalashtar monk that became an Atavist.

Racial substitution levels are not unlocked with the card, nor is the Atavist prestiege class. You could take soulknife levels right off the bat, and use your 5th level unlock to start taking Atavist levels. At 10th levei, use the unlock to open racial substitution levels, and retroactively apply them to the soulknife levels you took.

Note that this is very much a gray area, and some judges may not allow switching the levels retroactively. I don't think i'm changing my classes if I do it, but others might.
