There is this great little game store near my house called Lionheart Games and I have been pressing the guy to do some kind of RPGA event there. He thought that was a great idea and went on the RPGA site to find out what they offered and came across the Retailer Event section. Now we have an event set up for June 26th (tentatively).

So what did I get myself into? I've run plenty of games, but I've never run an RPGA event. I guess I'm prepared (I took the test online and my friend Mark is working on finishing it himself). I'm also quite familiar with the Eberron Campaign Setting, so I don't think that should be a problem. I guess what I'm looking for here is what to expect. Anything that you can think of that I need to know would be appreciated. Let me know. Thanks.

You might want to expect players that have never played in an RPGA type setting. Thus meaning they will need RPGA cards/#s which if you dont' have them you can email RPGAsanctioning@wizards.com and ask them for some.

also for the players who dont have a character made up but may want to play. there are fast play characters online at rpga.com that you can download and offer to them as a quick and easy way to get started.

A big part of the Eberron setting is the use of Action Points that allow an additional d6 to a d20 roll and a few other uses. Most fantasy D&D players will not be aware of these action points. At the beginning of an Eberron session, I typically explain to the players how and when action points can be used and then I remind them the first few times they roll a d20. Typically, action points are forgotten by the end of the session, so I will remind them again during the climatic battles.

You may also want to emphasize to the players that combat isn't the necessary or optimal path for most encounters. Experience point reward is more objective-based and many adventures can be made easier through diplomacy, bribery, or trickery. That's part of the feel of Eberron.

Many of the questions are you going to have as you run the event (and that you will get from the players) will have to do with the RPGA in general. Unfortunately, the RPGA is not a very "user-friendly" organization in terms of instruction. I would start here to read more about the RPGA:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=rpga/hq/newcomers

Then I would check out Dave Christ's article about getting started in the RPGA. They've done their best to bury it--I knew about it and it still took me 10 minutes of searching to find the link--but here it is:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=rpga/hq/poly2c&dcmp=DDPR-0002

After that, you are going to have to do what all new RPGA folks have to do. Either find someone who knows the answers that aren't published anywhere, or come onto the lists looking for help.

Good luck!
