So, you're a budding evil wizard of immence power, yadda yadda. The time has come for you to start thinking about... you know, that time. Soon enough, you're going to die, and you need to prepare. You've already decided that you're going to become a lich, you know the rituals, you've read every source on the matter, but you want your phylactery to be something special- something cool, something hard-to-find, or something combining the two. Below is a list of 1001 cool ideas for making a phylactery (I'll start off with a few... you know how these go; and yes, some of these were stolen from the dracolich thread)

1. The left eyeball in a statue of St. Cuthbert
2. A copper piece used to pay one of the minions
3. Ever notice that we have a second moon?
4. The ale mug used for drinking games in the local tavern
5. The royal scepter of an obscure kingdom
6. A really cool magic item that grants its bearer immortality (inevitably in the possession of a PC)
7. Divine focus for a cleric (would it work for a good-aligned cleric?)
8. A set of dice (well... a single die in the set)
9. A comet

37) A demiplane. Cast genesis, awaken the baby demiplane, give it all of your magic tomes (so it can train as a wizard if it gets experience), store all of your valuables in it, enhance it with Permanency and every kind of spell you can possibly enhance it with, then make it your phylactery. Now you've got a PLANE as your phylactery, that grows and does stuff on its own, even manipulating itself. Don't forget to populate it with some of your minions, who will worship the demiplane to give it divine rank. :D And as they reproduce, the demiplane gets buffer. And be sure to toss in acorns and seeds and junk once in a while so your phylactery of d00m grows its own ecosystem... consider tossing in an item that produces unspeakable amounts of water.
If you ever get killed, you recreate your body in the demiplane somewhere, allowing you to gather resources and gate back to wherever you were when you died.
If you keep tossing loot in (even dead bodies), your phylactery will always be able to provide all the resources you'll ever need.

55. Inside the body of the lich's worst enemy's loved one (especially if they're a good-aligned character). It should have disintegrate or some other powerfully destructive spell made contingent upon it so that way, if it's ever removed it destroys the loved one as well, forcing the opponent to choose between destroying you, or willfully destroying a good mortal that they care for.

56. At the bottom of a lake of acid, encased with another dead body (for spares) and a scroll of greater teleport within a container. Immediately outside the container are antimagic fields, so anyone trying to swim towards the container has all of their protections against getting corroded to death dispelled.

A demiplane isn't an animal, construct, plant, or undead, so you can't cast awaken on it.

What you can do, however, if you're an epic spellcaster is you can create a living vault, which is a construct, and then cast awaken on that...

Cast it on something small. Glue it to the top of a decanter of endless water. Make a moveable version of a wall of force (quite reasonable as the SBG permits castle walls of a wall of force and permits mobile castles) and cast it above the object. Spin rapidly, point at an empty part of the sky.

Good luck trying to catch it. It won't be long before it's going only a hair below lightspeed.

Hair Below Light Speed? Well, Teleport being FTL... get somethign nice and massive in fromt of it.

How? Being able to put something in front of it implies that you can figure out where that point is. Lets be very generous and say that a quickened spell goes off in a mere 1/10th of a second. It still moves a couple of planetary diameters in that time. You're not going to be able to see it long enough to figure out where it's going to be that far away.

Not to mention that if you're nearby you're going to be fried by the radiation of it's engine.

68. The eye of a statue that is in the Lich's chamber, but is really tall and takes a DC 50 climb check (or something) to reach it.

69. The tooth of a random person's skeleton. (Oh, did I mention that this person is in a random graveyard and has been buried many years ago in the deepest plot in the place?)

70. A space between the planes that can only be reached by a specific portal that is in the center of the campaign world's core. (Only works if PCs and/or Lich can survive the core.*)

That's all I can think of now.

*A campaign world's core doesn't neccesarily have to be a ball of molten lava like ours'. For example, my campaign world's core is actually an ancient Mind Flayer city where the PCs had to stop them from firing a magical cannon that could put out the sun. :D

72.) Kidnap a king/person of power's son or daughter, kill the child and use a piece of them to create a Simulacrum with the personality of the deceased child. Now set up some of your minions to fail against an adventurer's rescue operation and return the never aging child to his/her parents. To get to and destroy the phylactery they must destroy a construct that thinks it is itself (actually child).

*note: this is not my idea, it was posted before in a different, "best phylactery* thread. It has just stuck with me.

73.) Have your phylactery be the control device for a shield guardian that some how gets into the hands of the PC's.

74.) Bargain with an evil creature of air or water, such as a Cloud Giant living in a castle upon clouds, or the eye of stone golem cut into the shape of an evil aquatic race's diety.

82. Cast Minor Servitor from Savage Species on your phylactery to permanently make it into an intelligent animated object. Train it to be a spellcaster to protect itself.

83. Polymorph your phylactery into a duplicate of yourself as a human, then cast Searing Seed from Dragon 300 on it. This will produce a duplicate of your phylactery with the half-fiend template which retains the abilities of the original - meaning it can house your soul.

84. Make a contract with the modrons of Mechanus to protect it.

85. Enslave a fiend with the ability to possess, then force that fiend to possess your phylactery. Trap it permanently with Imprison Possessor from the Book of Vile Darkness. The possessed fiend will still have all of its spell-like abilities, so it can still teleport at will to escape any danger.

People, please note that once your phylactery is made, you cannot further enhance it.
You have to do all the enchanting for an item before you make it your phylactery.

89) Make the Orrery in the Modron Cathedral in the heart of Regulus on Mechanus your phylactery, and laugh as the Modrons fight off anyone who tries to bust in there and blow it up. :D Then watch Primus kill you and remove the phylactery properties from his prized Orrery. :weep:

People, please note that once your phylactery is made, you cannot further enhance it.
There are plenty of ways to enhance it. Possession works, as those fiends can possess magic items. You can't add qualities to it in the manner of a magic item per se, but you can cast spells on it. You can even use spells on it that don't work on magic items by using repeated Dispel Magics on it - if you read Dispel Magic closely, you find that a magic item targetted by the spell ceases to be a magic item for the duration of the effect, making it a viable "nonmagical item" for spells which require such targets.

You make a large chandeler and you make it very gaudy and put all sorts of baubles on it. Then you make your Phylactery a bauble but you make every single bauble have a concealed magical aura, but you also give the chandelier a magical aura. Then you delibriatly make one bauble to be slightly revealing of its magical aura so that it is the first one detected.

100) An adamantine sphere (maybe twenty-five/thirty pounds in mass) that encases your standard phylactery. But the Liche should use the highest-level teleport power that he has access to, placing it "so high up that when it falls, it actually falls past the world.

Only way to get at it is to get the same ability, teleport up to it, and knock it back down (which would destroy it instantly, but also kill the person who did it.)

1) No matter how high you put it it will need a good push sideways if you want it to go into orbit.

2) This isn't good protection to someone who knows where it is. I do agree that contact with it would be a very bad idea because it's going to be moving at least a few thousand miles an hour sideways. However you don't need to knock it down. Just cast a wall of force (or even any other solid wall) in it's path. Since it's in orbit you can predict where it's going to be in the future and thus you can block it's path.

108) (I think)

From the older thread, a gem. A regular old gem. In the body of a magical construct that can make more of its kind. And the gem can be teleported from constrcut to construct. Not only do you get a phylactery, but you get to strip the world of all resources, dooming everyone on it to death. Nothing says evil like complete, total, and undiscriminating genocide.

The ultimate phylactery would be your fortress. So, the PCs kill you, then start looking for your phylactery. Ten days later, you return and kill them.

For the lich lacking such power, locate a portal from the Material Plane to the Negative Energy Plane, or make one yourself. Create a small structure around the portal on the Negative Energy Plane, equipped with the essentials: divination room, laboratory, summoning room, library, altar. Stick a few undead guards around to protect it, or contract a local nightshade. Build it out of adamantine, and make the structure itself your phylactery.

When you are killed and your fortress destroyed, you will reappear within your Negative Energy Plane hideout. From there, you have all the resources to begin your evil plots once more.

Be advised that several of the previous suggestions result in you reappearing in the Abyss, or in orbit, or next to the Tarrasque.

Some high level wizards or psions could blow some hardcore spells and xp to learn exactly where and what a phylactery is. The best way I've ever thought of around that is to find an area of wild magic out in the dead of space and keep in there. Wild magic shouldn't affect a phylactery but would screw up any spell seeking to divine it, I believe. Plus, space has no impact on an undead lich. So if you hid it 17000 light years in a wild magic zone from that third star on the left, who would ever be able to find it, travel to it, and destroy it before dying?

Word to the wise: get the Silent metamagic feat and keep a surplus of Teleport without Error scrolls tied to your phylactery so you don't respawn and find yourself stuck on the other side of the universe.

Heck, if your PHYLACTERY is in space, why not put a secret base there? Then you can employ ORBITAL BOMBARDMENT!

Orbital Bombardment 101:
First, get a Large thoqqua. Bring it to your orbital base.
Then, drop the thoqqua on top of a city. Being immune to fire, the thoqqua will survive the heat of reentry, and will then proceed to cause quite a bit of damage upon impact.

Make a cool shaped red gem, polished out of not too large ruby, or some such. Make several. Make one the phylactory. Hide aura. Make each gem not the phylactory an item that casts a 10d6 fireball, triggered by keyword or destruction. Make phylactory aura match fireball gems.

Put them all together some place hard to get to. Like the small intestine of your firend and mentor the great red wyrm. Cast stone to flesh on the wyrm.
Put a magic necklace on the wyrm statue It casts stone to flesh on wearer if anyone opens lair.

Place the wyrm in "his" dungeon lair, behind several puyzzles, traps and monsters.

My PCs were smart enough to not try to destroy the gems (seems the untrusting oafs think I am that evil). But imagine how ****** they were when the lich used his free action to trigger them, healing and invigorating his immoulated skeletal minions.

Why put it far away or impossible to get to? Much more fun if they find it. :P

That would probably work as a Teleport Object, so the lich could cast Dimensonal Anchor and Permancy on his phylactery if you as the DM would allow that.

It fits within what's allowed of Wish so it should work. Of course, most liches are probably going to put their phylacteries on a different plane if you wouldn't allow a Permanent Dimensional Anchor to work. Also, if it's a Golem, it may weigh more then what Teleport Object would allow, so it could just fail (instead of instant-killing everyone, as some DMs seem to be fond of doing  )

(The number is lost to me): Flesh to stone a hero, castrate him, phylacterize his severed goodies, then re-attach them, stone to flesh, regenerate, modify memory.
You'll regenerate close to him, should you be destroyed. He'll never father children, since the negative energy would totally warp his sperm (or just kill them). Even if your phylactery is destroyed, your foe has suffered through a totally disturbing experience, and even if his jewels are regenerated, he's probably going to go stark raving mad.
Works well on paladins, as making them crazy will make them lose their powers.

x+1)Make your own personal demiplane, and have IT be the phylactery. Way to confuse the heck out of those pesky heroes when they enter it to destroy you.

x+2)make it into a holy symbol. There are few things more difficult than besting an evil cleric, and they'd have to get through him to get to you.

x+3)Make it be your spellbook. Whatever wizard helped in destroying you is going to think long and hard about destroying the newly found research of a lich of great power, and probably doesn't have the heart to do it until he can copy the spells, by which time you will regenerate. Also solves the problem of how you get your spellbook back.

This might actually work in the RAW. Make your phylactery from a valuable gem. The Demiplane Seed spell (or class feature from Manual of the Planes) can then use it as the material component. I believe the effect specifies that the gem transforms into the plane.

Yep. As I said, surprise the heck out of them. ;)

I especially like it as you can hide your fortress in there and keep several fake phylacteries around inside it just to make them squirm. Additionally, you can control the time flow and magic inside the demiplane so your spells are far more potent than usual in there.

yes that is a good idea, but it wouldnt work because you cant use the phylatery in any spells or add enchantments to it after it is your phylactery. it is a good idea but it probly wont work. depends on whether the DM thinks using a phylactery as a spell component is allowed. ahh the great DM discretion. a gift and a curse.

yes that is a good idea, but it wouldnt work because you cant use the phylatery in any spells or add enchantments to it after it is your phylactery.
The RAW on phylacteries is fairly sparse, appearing in the Monster Manual and Libris Mortis. Only Libris Mortis rules that phylacteries can't be further enchanted, and it uses the following language:
A phylactery cannot be part of another magic item, nor may additional magic properties be built into it.
If you're only using MM, you have no RAW basis for denying this.

If you're using Libris Mortis, it's debatable. Is using the phylactery as a component "building additional properties" into it? I'm inclined to think it's not.

Also, it's just opens up such awesome possibilities. The demiplane is definitely my favorite. My own idea of awakening the phylactery (via the SS spell Minor Servitor) and training it as a spellcasters also requires this interpertation, as does the idea from Dragon of using the phylactery (if a gem) as the focus of a Trap the Soul spell to snag a giant monster like the tarrasque.

Technically, you aren't enhancing the phylactery at all, but instead using it as a component for an entirely different spell. Sarlax already said this, of course. But there's another distinction in that whatever traits the plane possesses aren't actually enhancements of the phylactery, but a feature of the demiplane spell (which I think is called Genesis, though I'm not certain).

That the phylactery is turned into the demiplane through the casting of the spell is just a nifty side effect of an already cool spell. Since you're not enchanting the phylactery with a magical property but making a spell using the phylactery as a component, I'd be inclined to say that it works by the RAW, and since it's cool I'd say to heck with the spirit of the rule. :D

EDIT; Heck, Sarlax already pointed out that DRAGON mag has demonstratably used a phylactery as a spell component for a very cool trapping idea I wish I'd have thought of. Still... that opens up a realm of possibility for a Demilich and his eight soulstone gems...

Take the Genesis spell. Create a plane with a flowing time of 1 instant in the genesis plane= 1 eternity on the material plane. Since upon creating it does not yet exist, place your phylactery at the EXACT center of the plane. Make the plane an exact 180 feet cubed sphere with Objective gravity towards the edges of the plane. Since the phylactery is in the exact center, it alone will be pulled on equally from all sides, thus suspending it seemingly in midair. Anyone entering the plane for the first time would not know any of this about the plane and would exit it due to the gravity pulling them to the edge of the plane an infinitude of material plane eternities later. If DM says eternity is not an actual existing time(i know an instant is, although it doesn't have an exact time frame yet in physics), then just pick an abruptly large number, like 10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^1 0^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10 ^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^10^ 10^10 years in the material plane per instant on the plane.
Feel free to give the plane any other more deadly abilities you feel necesary, such as giving the phylactery to a creature, casting temporal stasis on him, and placing him in the exact center of the plane as above and make the plane static too. Then the creature and phylactery can not be affected by a non-denzin of the plane.
You can also make it highly negative plane, or highly positive plane, or even a lightly negative plane would be effective. Make it Limited magic to cause no teleportation, flying, gravity altering, protection from the plane's abilities, or anything you deem necesary. I find that that would be better protection than any other thing i have heard besides possibly just making the plane itself the phylactery (if that's RAW).

Hmm, is there any way to both awaken the phylactery gem with Minor Servitor and also turn it into a plane with Demiplane Seed? Because then you've got a sentient plane, which you can train as an apprentice (take Leadership). Now that ... would be sweet. :schemes:

Some of these ideas have one problem - you reappear next to your phylactery, so putting it someplace that's hazardous to you wouldn't be so hot. Sticking it in space would be fine though, just pile on the dimention locks and anti-scrying spells around it, then when you reappear, move away from the phylactery to escape the Dimention Lock and Teleport back home.

What book is the Genesis spell in?
Lyinginbedmon

09-30-05, 12:14 PM
It's in the Epic Level Handbook. An alternate version is also a Sor/Wiz 9 spell

Genesis
Conjuration (Creation)
Level: Creation 9
Components: V, S , M, XP
Casting Time: 1 week (8 hours/day)
Range: 180 ft.
Effect: A demiplane on the Ethereal Plane centered on your location
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

This spell creates an immobile, finite plane with limited access—a demi-plane.

Demiplanes created by this power are very small, minor planes. A character can cast this spell only on the Ethereal Plane. When he or she casts it, a local density fluctuation precipitates the creation of a demiplane. At first, the demiplane grows at a rate of a 1-foot-radius per day to an initial maximum radius of 180 feet as the fledgling plane draws substance from surrounding ethereal vapors and protomatter or astral ectoplasm.

The character determines the environment in the demiplane when he or she first casts genesis, reflecting most any desire he or she can visualize. The caster determines factors such as atmosphere, water, temperature, and the shape of the general terrain. However, the spell cannot create life, nor can it create construction. If desired, these must be brought in by some other fashion.

Once the basic demiplane reaches its maximum size, the character can continue to cast this spell to enlarge the demiplane if he or she is inside the boundaries of the demiplane. In such a case, the radiusof the demiplane increases by 60 feet for each subsequent casting.

If the spell is cast again while outside an existing demi-plane, the casting creates a separate bubble that does not touch or overlap any previously created demiplane.

If you appear close to your phylactery, I would just use a small chamber in the heart of a mountain with no physical entrances. Permanent Teleportation Circle, and your phylactery. And a Boccob's Blessed Book, so that you can re-arm yourself before you leave.
If location of the phylactery has no bearing on location of your reappearance, gather a lot of loyal and combat worthy minions. Give them each a small item with a Nystul's Magic Aura. Imprison them. Make sure that this is known by anyone that adventurers would probably talk to if they decided to destroy you. Then quietly make a large tribute to an allied Green Dragon. Green Dragon, because they're lawful evil, and less likely to sell you out. Then, secure as many false phylacteries as you want. Donations to museums, having more minions go out into the world to hide items somewhere they will never be found (Contingent Circle of Death on the minions, you don't want them telling anyone about this, do you?), Living vaults, extradimensional pockets, the works. One of the many items you're hiding is your phylactery. You decide which one.

In a cube of force with a Ward against Mordy’s D and disintegrate.
Something with Nailed to the sky cast on it.
Within a flying construct. At least 50000 feet up.

Yes indeed, it seems that the best idea is a small non/extradimesional pocket, where you can reform and teleport/planeshift out, but noone can come in. It's not like you can plane shift to the "portable hole with a spellbook and a magical trinket".
Rohano

I agree.
It might seem suicide to put your phlactery in a dangerous area (like the heart of a volcano at the bottom of a river of molten rock), but you could put your phylactery inside a portable hole, fold it up and put it inside of a ball of fire-resistant (enchantments to your heart's desire) adamantite (or other heat-resistant material).
To get to your phylactery, they have to locate it. Which doesn't work too well if it's in a portable hole. But if a hero should locate where the ball of adamantite is, they have to bypass all the hazards, then they have to find a way to break open the ball, then they have to unfold the portable hole (put permanent fire walls in your portable hole or some other similar spell and any hero will be a bit apprehensive at the idea of putting their arm in there).
You can also put constructs into the portable hole. The hero might be able to fish your phylactery out after a shield guardian pulls him in and the hero gets beat up by half a dozen assorted golems/undead, etc.

I kept on thinking about Jaws during my english essay, and then also about Alabaster, the Lich BBEG in my current horror campaign. So, I thought I'd put the two together.

Find a Megalodon Shark, kill said Shark.
Crawl inside and find the Shark's organ of choice (Liver, stomach, testicle, whatever) and mark it with the arcane runes necessary for it to be your phylactery
Then, animate dead the Shark as a Zombie (Cast awaken undead if you want it to be a little more 'alive') and be sure to leave an item of gentle repose here and there to keep the thing fresh.
Release your new Zombie Megalodon Shark Phylactery into the oceans.

Even if it is found, it's one heck of a fishing trip!

Make it a jewel, around which is a lead box (to stop magic radiation, duh) put that inside a flesh golem's body beneath the skin, and then hang the flesh golem on a wall. Then, put a lid over the golem, and place wards and AMFs around it to stop mordy's disjunction.

Go with a loved one of a good-aligned King and place your phylactery in her heart, without killing her.

Or if you need to appear next to your phylactery, put it inside a portable hole in a inclosed tomb that only you know the location.

There exists a lead-lined adamantine box with thick walls/edges. Contained in the box (which is fire trapped - empowered) is a grand gem.
This box is in a coffin covered with Symbols of Death, Blindness and Insanity (heightened to level 9). The coffin is sized to the Lich.
The coffin rests in a room loaded up with traps... blade traps, arrow traps, dart traps... anything but bludgening.
The room is also filled with skeletal Xills and Meriliths.
This room is deep under the Earth, as in kilometers, with no passage in or out. No passage ever existed to this place.
The box is the phylactery, not the gem.

That isn't all that smart actually. For an immortal being the humal lifespan is just to short. Who wants to dig it up after every ~70 years...

Take a PotC-esque route: Take 882 perfectly identical gold pieces. Enchant one as your phylactery. Put it on the other side of the continent at the bottom of a EL 20th dungoen with 12 scrolls of Gaseous Form and having the only access be through an incredibly long pipe almost too narrow for an ant. Slap on all the anti-divination methods you can get your hands on. Repeat this with every one of the 882 gold pieces and make everything the heroes discover point to the dungeon you live in. Watch the do-gooders cry as they try to guess which of 882 different dungeons is needing to be cleared to permanently kill you. Watch them give up, then restore whichever dungeons got cleared and shuffle the coins.

A drop of water. In the ocean
In theory, that would be self-destructive.

Factor in that a drop of water is only such on it's own.

Added to the ocean it is dissipated into the ocean itself, and therefore is no longer a droplet.

Once the phylactery ceases to be in one piece (Such as through dissolution), it ceases to function, and therefore by dropping your droplet phylactery into the ocean you've destroyed it.

What number are we on?

125: A needle in a stack of identical needles. Here's the real annoyance: all of the needles (including the correct one) give off the same exact magical aura!

126: Place the phylactery in the last place anyone would look: out in the open!

Regdar: Does anyone see that lich's phylactery?
Lidda: There's a sign that says phylactery, and it's pointing at at that magical drawing.
Jozan: What kind of idiot does this lich think we are?
Mialee: Maybe we already destroyed the phylactery.
Regdar: Let's go to the next room.

Several days later, after the heroes have given up and left, the lich returns fully healed and laughs, "Fools, I am the smartest lich in the world! That magical drawing was my phylactery!"

127: Place the phylactery in another one of the last places anyone would look: the top of Mount Clangeddin!

128: Another last place anyone would look: one of the gem windows in the palace of Bahamut!

129: A Mirror inside a room of 999,999,999,999,999,999,999,002 mirrors, all of which are exactly the same and give off the same magical aura!

130: A seashell at the bottom of the Silver Sea of the Mount Celestia Plane! Boy that will be bad! For the lich, that is.

131: A gate; no not a mundane gate, a magical gate, knucklehead!

132: The wedding ring of a really stupid hound archon paladin

133: A book owned by Wee Jas; here's the real problem: it's her favorite book!

134: Boccob's personal journal!

135: The Lady of Pain's robe!

A drop of water. Water can flow through rivers, turn to vapour, end up at the bottom of the ocean, become clouds, and fall back down, this time as snow. Nevermind hard to detect, water cannot be destroyed, the amount of water in the world has been a constant, is a constant, and always will be, we haven't had more or less since day 1(okay, maybe a lil later). As for reappearing underwater, undead don't need to breathe, and any self-respecting lich can cast teleport.
Barnwellknight

11-23-06, 08:09 PM
Unless that water is the Silver Sea of the Mount Celestia Plane. A good hiding place, until you regenerate...(plays funeral song for the destroyed lich)

136: Drizzt's panther pet (the statue!); okay, don't blame me for posting this if some evil Red Wizard lich does this!

137: A gem in a mountain of gems! Oh, fudge brownies!

138: The first tree that appeared when the world was created! Okay, cutting down that tree is sure to bring a world of pain to the heroes from elves, druids, rangers, Ehlonna, Obad-Hai, other forest deities, and nature lovers!

Along time ago I had one of my favorite characters (an Artificer Gnome) and when he became a lich he made his phy. into a skull. He then scribed a scroll of Morden. Mag. Mansion and placed the skull into the broom closet of the mansion. The entry portal was in lowest part of the Underdark . Then he used his Permancey scroll and did that. Our DM allowed it but he said that he needed to pay 3,000 xp to permancey it. He did alot of retaining essences after it.

First, find the best nongood painter in the world. Commission a top-quality painting. Assist him in creating said painting - possibly with the use of spells. While he is painting, turn the painting into your phylactery - you are creating your phylactery with assistance.

Then, once the painting is complete, sell the painting on the open market, preferably to a powerful (and nongood) king. Hide your identity, and pay the artist to keep the secret. When all is said and done, thank the artist properly.

Your phylactery is now a incredibly valuable painting. Few owners would be willing to surrender it to a bunch of adventurers, who obviously intend to destroy it. Enchanting it against damage is a good idea, but don't put up layers of wards - energy resistance and DR will do fine.

How about making a construct a phylactry? If you're really mean, you could give the construct the Soul-Locked trait from Heroes of Horror; making it only destructible in one extremely rare fashion.

Or, if playing in Eberron, you could make a Warforged PC the phylactry.
Rohano

11-26-06, 08:10 PM
Problem with using a living construct like a warforged as your phylactery is that if it's reincarnated or the subject of true resurrection, it gets a new body, allowing the heroes/other guys the chance to disenchant or destroy the body.

Hmm. What about a Great Wyrm Red Dragon, Polymorph Any Object'd into a gold coin (which is made into your phylactery, which is then made unscryable and has its magical aura suppressed, which is then replicated via Clone a few thousand times, which is then placed in a treasure chest, which is then affected with Shrink Item, which is then coated in Quintessence, which is placed in a small adamantine sphere, which is then enchanted as an ioun stone, which is set to orbit the planet at a distance of roughly 100 miles?

Alternately, you could cast Prismatic Sphere + Permanency about 400 times in the same spot, floating in midair, then put your phylactery in the middle of it.

craft tens of thousands of tiny hollow riverine balls. make those your pylactry. then animate it, this will eliminate all of riverine's weaknesses in these ways:

mordrenkaines's disjuncion: it is now a creature, not a magic item nor a magical effect
disintigrate: because it is now a creature, not an object, it will take the damage function of disintigrate, and its infinite hardness will protect it
rod of cancellation: see mordrenkainen's disjunction
Lyinginbedmon

12-16-06, 11:22 AM
Only 1 such ball could be a phylactery. Disjunction and Cancellation would affect it, because it is animated via Animate Object, and so is under the effect of a spell. Disintegrate is not affected by Hardness.
forrestfire15

12-21-06, 08:47 PM
disjunction would work, but it works on normal pylactries too!
and disintigrate does 2d6/lv damage to creatures, and animated objects have wis and cha.

PS: one ball of 30-40 thousand balls. that will be hard to find if you have all the nondetection/aura altering spells on it.
