sometimes I put stuff in campains just to see how the players react to them, so let's make a list of monsters to do just that.

1) the dire winged pangolin with 3 lvs in barbarian.
dawnbringer

12-25-06, 06:00 PM
2) Headcrabs from Half-Life 2
Angelflesh

6. A mummy in an underwater cave

7. Blackwater (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=759683)

8. A Gagoogabla. (It was a home-brewed CR 14-16 large-sized extraplanar ooze with 50 foot reach, "blood axes" that dug into your body untill pulled out (and rejoined the Gagoogablas's body when they were removed), and they auto-ressurected one hour after death with bonus HD for being killed. The DM who created them introduced 3+ of them at 10th level at the same time.)

9. A grick. I kid you not. It came up from a bunch of clay spheres. My players, newbs all, where seriously like "WTF!" and, as their puny first level weapons didn't damaged the thing. One player tried to rip its tentacles off, another wanted to set it on fire.

Ah Ryuu_Tenshi! You linked to my very first monster! I've actually played a prinny rogue to 9th level, Lot's of fun. Well, for some other odd monsters to make your players think "What the heck is that?" I woudl suggest my evil flan, or my citron assassin. Also, making them fight a dire chicken is always fun.

Apply Random templates to ordinary farm animals. After fighting a half-dragon cow and a Titanic chicken, your players will wonder what's going on.

Best thread......EVER! :D

I'll edit this if I come up with anything clever....which may mean we'll be waiting until the cows come home with an ice age in tow.

Ok....maybe not that long...

Hmmm, how about a titanic pseudonatural shadow tribble (no relation to Vorpal Tribble...well, ok, a little)? That thing would reproduce at a staggering rate and the world would be consumed by an endless horde of tentacled, fuzzy, shadowy, supersized dust bunnies.....

Flee, flee for your lives!!!!!!!!!

Instead of a rooster, each morning was heralded by a Great Wyrm Blue Dragon who wasn't quite right in the head.

:OMG!

I'm picturing this thing climbing out onto the cliffs near its cave, raising its majestic head, fanning its wings, and looking all regal, then inhaling deeply, and instead of great bolts of lightning and a trumpeting roar, it bellows a ear-shattering:

"C*CK-A-DOODLE-DOO! C*CK-A-DOODLE-DOO! C*CK-A-DOODLE-DOO!"

"WTF!" is right!

Oh, and two I've used before just to annoy my players :P :

Bunniculla, based off a childhood cartoon: vampiric half-fiend rabbit;

And Abernathy, the good-aligned half-celestial goblin shaman 5 sorcerer 3 pacifist, with his familiar Mouse, a winged cat. Abernathy had an unusual magic item too: a Staff of Healing that healed 2d6 damage by touch, but you had to hit someone with it to invoke it, dealing 1d6 damage in the process. Actually had one PC volunteer to be whacked with the staff several times to be healed; really sucked for him when I rolled 6 damage followed by snake eyes (2) for the healing

I think I might redo Abernathy though and give him some stuff from BoED :D

Well, right now, I have a certain plan for a wicked encounter.

It involves a 12-headed pyrohydra... in the middle of the ocean. No one knows they have swim speeds!
...and augment summoned fiendish huge sharks. hasted and on overland flight, mass. A dozen. They can hold their breaths long enough for the entire fight.

My players are gonna :headexplo

Hey, did anyone notice what happens when you add the half-celestial template to a shark? Itīs larger than medium...

You know it's not a 1001 thread if you don't put numbers next to your posts.

I'll go back and change my number to the proper order when everyone else does. Because, I'm to lazy to count out the monsters.

13. My PCs were freaked out by a Giant Psurlon with improved natural attack(bite) liberally using Invisibility. I threw that thing at my PCs when they were investigating the attacks upon Gnomish Miners in a mine in Eberron. They were walking along a mining cart track only to have the thing materialize with its jaws around the Warforged. More or less I ended up describing the thing similar to the carnictus worms from King Kong.

14. I've given my PCs numerous reasons to fear Trolls despite how much I throw them at them.
Metafictional

15 (I think?)

An Awakened Phantom Fungus Warlock. High enough level to Fly (Fell Flight? Can't remember the name of the Invocation). Seriously. ^-^

Rogue could be amusing as well.

First time I used a regular Phantom Fungus, the whole table accused me of homebrewery!

Two hundred six demiliches? That's two hundred six disintegrates per round (average 8240 damage). That would make an interesting encounter.

Empowered Awakened Parrot Wizard.

Was actually a PC in a wonky campaign of mine where the halfling-like bard (actually a humanoid otter) was the party tank AND primary healer. Surprisingly, there was only 1 player death, and that was when the giant slug summoned the vrock with a fireball-summoning circle trap.

DAMAGE/ATTACK: 1-4/1-6

SPECIAL ATTACKS: None

SPECIAL DEFENCES: +3 weapon or required higher to hit

MAGIC RESISTENCE: 80%

SIZE: S

MORALE: 9 (not quite confident with its abilities yet...)

XP VALUE: 270

The breeding habits of balrogs are still a source of debate amongst scholars. Some believe that balrogs, oweing to their extremely magical nature, don't actually "do the deed" as we would understand it and that balrogs are, by nature, asexual. Others believe (although it is scary to think about how they came across this information) that balrogs are quite active sexually and that the reason they are so rare is that they are all off in the secret balrog mating grounds, having a lot more fun then most of us. While the methods of balrog breeding remain unknown, the results are not. Baby balrogs look exactly like balrogs in minature, standing about as tall as your average halfling. Like regular balrogs, they carry a flaming whip and are hostile to just about everything and anything. They just run away with their tails (?) between their legs at the slightest sign of danger.

COMBAT: In combat, baby balrogs attack with their itty bitty claws and their tiny little flaming whip. When they attack, the let out tiny, high pitched imitations of a fully-grown momma balrog cry (Yup! Yup!). They fight rather well, the only problem being that while they begin combat with a confident, swaggering attitude they get very dissapointed when they're not as powerful as daddy and run away crying.

HABITAT/SOCIETY: Baby balrogs are solitary creatures, having been dumped in a dungeon by their parents in order to teach them something about life as a big balrog. Their parents usually leave them there to fend for themselves for a few hundred years before they come and collet. And momma seems to always choose to pick up junior just as her little darling encounters some cruel, nasty adventurers.

ECOLOGY: Baby balrogs fend for themselves in a dungeon quite well, usually living off rats and snakes, although they like kobold when they can get it. Very few creatures pray on baby balrogs, just in case momma turns up just before they start their meal...

COOKIE GOLEM

CLIMATE/TERRAIN: Any

FREQUENCY: Very Rare

ORGANISATION: Solitary

ACTIVITY CYCLE: Any

DIET: Nil

INTELLIGENCE: Non (0)

TREASURE: Nil

ALIGNMENT: Neutral

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NO. APPEARING: 1

ARMOUR CLASS: 10

MOVEMENT: 24 (48)

HIT DICE: 1/2 (1 H.P.)

THAC0: 20

NO. OF ATTACKS: 1

DAMAGE/ATTACK: 1d3

SPECIAL ATTACKS: None

SPECIAL DEFENCES: None

MAGIC RESISTENCE: 10%

SIZE: T

MORALE: 20

XP VALUE:

The cookie golem was created by a baker/wizard who was, to be perfectly honest, stark raving bonkers. It seemed that he had some mad delusions of granduer involving him as ruler of the world inhabited entirely by sentient cookies. Luckily for the world, his plans fell through. However, before he died, the baker left in his notes the plans for creating the easiest to make, the fastest to make, and the lamest, golem of all time, the not really dreaded at all cookie golem. A cookie golem takes one week to make by a Wizard of at least level 3. The wizard makes the dough at a cost of 5 gold pieces, uses cookie cutters to cut out the shape of a man and while the cookie is baking, casts Jump, Mending and Magic Mouth. The result is the utterly useless Cookie Golem.

Cookie Golems don't give two figs about their masters orders. They simply run around all the time yelling "Run run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread/Chocolate Chip/etc. Man!" Because of their utter uselessness, very few wizards can actually be bothered creating the stupid little things.

COMBAT: Cookie Golems don't seem to do a lot of fighting. They're too busy trying to evade their masters. However, when they are forced to fight, the average Kobold would find them a complete pushover, if they can catch one that is. When defeated, cookie golems usually make pretty good eating.

HABITAT/SOCIETY: Cookie Golems, if they can escape from their master, seem to develop some form of intelligence over time. In game terms, this can be measured as 1 point per month for six months, after which they stay as they as, as thick as two house bricks. These "free cookies" sometimes band together in groups which sit around at night and tell each other stories of the fury of the oven, of the dreaded Cookie Monster and of the awe inspiring King Cookie, who lives in a magical land where cookies are free from evil people who would eat them. Luckily for us, most cookie golems are eaten long before they can hear such tales.

ECOLOGY: Yeah, right!

54(also my favorite)
FLUFF

CLIMATE/TERRAIN: Just about anywhere.

FREQUENCY: Very Rare, or common if the DM really is a bastard.

ORGANISATION: Solitary

ACTIVITY CYCLE: Any, it doesn't care

DIET: Milk and cookies

INTELLIGENCE: Very (11)

TREASURE: Nil

ALIGNMENT: Lawful Evil

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NO. APPEARING: 1

ARMOUR CLASS: 10

MOVEMENT: 6 (8)

HIT-DICE: 1

THAC0: 19

NO. OF ATTACKS: 0

SPECIAL DEFENCES: Cuteness

MAGIC RESISTENCE: 0%

SIZE: S

MORALE: 20

XP VALUE: 65

The Fluff is the cutest creature that could ever exist. It is small and fluffy with big, dewy, "Aww, who could hurt it" puppy-dog eyes. Actually, it IS a fluffy ball with eyes, there's nothing else to it. No brains, no internal organs, nothing but fluff and eyeballs. Fluffs move through a kind of magical levitation similar to beholders. If you're having trouble imagining what they look like, think of a floating tribble with the biggest, cutest eyes you've ever seen.

Although they look so cute, fluffs are actually quite evil creatures. They attempt to use their unbelievable cuteness to rise in power in a nation. Although their inability to communicate effectively except through moving their eyes does pose obvious difficulties, some fluffs have managed to become the pets of powerful kings (imagine it, "lets go to war with the neighbouring kingdoms, Fluffy goes all gooey eyed when I talk about it"). There are rumours of fluffs actually becoming the head of state in democratic nations. Who could vote against such a cute thing?

COMBAT: In combat, fluffs cannot attack. They have no arms, no legs, no magic, no psionics and no spells. They could conceivable ram attempt to ram someone, but it would inflict the same amount of damage as a teddy bear thrown by a weak kobold. However, Fluffs have a major defence. Their unbelievable cuteness means that no one, no matter what alignment, can bring themselves to harm a fluff under any circumstances. Instead, would-be attackers simply melt into a ball tears and insipid grins.

HABITAT/SOCIETY: It is rumoured that somewhere in the mass of planes, there is a fluff homeworld ruled by the Great High King Fluff. Nothing is known about the place because the few wizards who have chosen to research this obscure lore have gone insane, sitting around all day going "awww, how cute"

ECOLOGY: No one knows. Although if one thinks about how they would breed, they just don't seem quite so cute any more.

TRANSVESTITE TROLL

CLIMATE/TERRAIN: Far away from other trolls, bars

FREQUENCY: Very Rare

ORGANISATION: Solitary

ACTIVITY CYCLE: Night

DIET: Herbivore

INTELLIGENCE: High (11)

TREASURE: Q

ALIGNMENT: Neutral Good

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NO. APPEARING: 1

ARMOUR CLASS: 4

MOVEMENT: 12

HIT DICE: 6+6

THAC0: 13

NO. OF ATTACKS: 3

DAMAGE/ATTACK: By weapon, +8

SPECIAL ATTACKS: Shock

SPECIAL DEFENCES: Regeneration

SIZE: L

MORALE: 11

XP VALUE: 2000

Some trolls just don't feel at home in normal troll society. These trolls are more intelligent then most trolls and feel that there must be more to life then waiting for adventurers to turn up loaded with greek fire, torches and Melfs Acid Arrows. These exceptional individuals leave their trollhole and go out into the world trying to find some meaning to life. As a way of marking themselves as different from regular trolls, transvestite trolls have taken to wearing bright, floral mu-mu's. Note that a transvestite troll can be either male or female (how do you tell the difference?), it's the dress that matters, not the gender.

Most transvestite trolls can speak common as well as trollspeak.

COMBAT: Transvestite trolls are pacifists. Extreme, pointless violence is a notable feature of the traditional troll society which the transvestite trolls are rebelling against. However, hostile adventurers first encountering a transvestite troll will be subject to its shock attack. This attack is a result of seeing a troll wearing a bright yellow and orange floral dress. The transvestite troll gains automatic surprise and each character must make a save vs paralyzation or be struck dumb and unable to move or speak for 1d4+4 rounds. The troll will try and use this time to escape. If forced into combat, the troll will fight like a regular troll, but will try to subdue the characters rather then kill them. Most transvestite trolls carry a broardsword which they prefer to use instead of their fists (bare handed attacks are very troll-like).

HABITAT/SOCIETY: Most transvestite trolls are solitary by necessity rather then nature. When they encounter others of their kind, they tend to band together and form "troll-rights" groups. These groups never seem to achieve much, something about it being hard for people to listen to a troll wearing a dress. Still it is rumoured that one such group of about 12 members is planning to hold a troll-rights march in Waterdeep. Should prove to be interesting.

There's nothing more discouraging than, after days of gameplay, successfully raiding a ruined palace that's been abandoned for a millennium, only to slip through the entrance bridge and get swallowed by a gargantuan Koi that's been there all along

Alright...this one isn't nice. Aurorum Golem.

Just imagine a metallic automaton hell-bent on crushing you like a dung-beetle. Now imagine finally whittling it down until it cracks and shatters into a twisted heap of wreckage.

Give yourself a few seconds to congratulate yourself.

Now imagine that heartless automaton standing back up with not a scratch on its brilliant metal hide.

It's like a troll without the weakness to fire and acid...or anything for that matter.

Gotta throw this in, because your thread made me remember a campaign-ender from way back in AD&D times.

A half-demonic 12-headed pyrohydra. Sure, it's nasty now, but back in AD&D times, it was genuinely horrific. Back then, you HAD to kill the bugger by chopping off it's heads, and only fire and acid could keep them from regenerating. Except he was immune to both fire and acid. Another one:

237,580 kobolds. With shortbows. And precise shot. No, they're not accurate at all, but when they go, they'll hit an average of 11,879 times (from nat 20's). There's nothing quite as satisfying as making a 20th level party run away screaming "Run away! The kobolds are coming!"

Light_Colonel

06-12-07, 12:08 PM
I have used many a templated monster to confusing effect on players.

Multi-Headed Wolf Spiders. (That is to say, Wolves, with the Arachnoid template and the Multi-Headed template as well.) Bite = Poison + Trip. They were "only" 2 headed, so that was two poisonous trips per round.

Star of Chaos Spider. 8 headed (Lernean at least when there was a difference in 3.0) colossal, fiendish, Spider. Make a DC 42 Fort save. Ok... make 7 more. Awwww is the poor Fighter paralyzed? :D

All-time favorite though is the Tem-plat-a-pus. You take a Platypus (make up stats or find them online) you add every template that you can possible add to it. (Hint: You may want to start with Titanic ;) )

Other ways to mess with players is to just take a normal monster and change it's description. If the players use Knowledge (Player) instead of Knowledge skills on their sheet, they will cause themselves more trouble.
Hellsbells

06-12-07, 12:22 PM
It states in the multi headed template that each head has a sepparet brain and that the 2 heads coperation varies from creature to creature, thus 1 pyro head, 1 cyro head, 1 axiomatic head, etc. The half-fiend, tainted, pseudonatural, and dark/shadow apply to the whole body.

The PCs would meet her in normal human form either at the market selling cheese, or caring for her cattle as they leave the town. Leaf Golem Master!!!! Take a normal pixie, add the paragon template and give it DR 50, SR 30 and fast heal 25. Give it the abilty to summon 'Leaf Golems' which are just animated hat racks covered in leaves.

06-29-07, 02:11 AM
Well, I was in a party of all good characters. My character was a violet-haired 6 foot 2 elf evoker (violet haired elves are a race I created called Arnihan elves, based on a set of 2e characters I often played, hence my namesake), who wore a top hat and a trench coat with the skulls of his enemies on the shoulders (originally the rotting head attached to the top of the top hat, the eye sockets of which had been targeted with a light spell, a fireball left only the skull.) He was chaotic neutral, only because while he did commit unspeakably evil acts, they were all against evil creatures in the name of good, balancing it. The character had a flaw that involved draining his enemies of all their precious bodily fluids, which he would later use to tag at least one wall of any room he entered with DEHKAN WUZ HERE... in nine languages. However, he got turned into a wererat and removed from my control, and is now an enemy of the party. I believe that previous characters usually make the best WTF encounters. For example in a 2e game I met one of the dm's old characters, an evoker named Flair Firebreathin. He created the Church of the Everburning Log, which worshipped fire elementals by enchanting portapotties to burn forever. ahem... wtf. Why are evokers always so ****ed up?

The Deceptive Construct

The evil wizard whom you have been trailing for the last seven days is finally spotted. you see his carriage up ahead, his driver whipping vigorously at the horse. You continue to gain on him, and eventually the carriage suddenly stops. The wizard steps out and begins to laugh, and he taunts you, stating that although you have caught up to him it matters not. With that, the wizard vanishes, but strangely enough, so do the horse and the driver. There is a sound of wood creaking against wood, and the carriage begins to move. Parts of its frame fold out and the carriage stands upright upon the ground, with wooden arms suddenly sprouting from hidden compartments, and a roughly humanoid head crafted of pure oak emerges. Before you stands a fifteen foot tall construct of wood and metal siding. The carriage's wheels are now side guards for his knees and shoulders, it takes a fighting stance and attacks

On the surface a mere carriage, there is more to this vehicle than meets the eye. Wizards who wish to combine mobility with protection build these, fooling enemies with their appearance as ordinary carriages, wagons, or even boats. The larger the vehicle, the stronger the end resulting construct is. They are also intelligent, capable of thinking outside of the box, taking complex orders, and using complex tactics (They are essentially a combination of a construct and an intelligent magic item). A deceptive construct speaks common and any one language known by its creator.

Combat

A Deceptive Construct fights first and foremost to protect his creator, whom he often affectionately refers to as "the maker". The first thing he does is attempt to mow his foes down at range with crossbow bolts fired from a launcher on each of his forearms. When his opponents come within melee range, he favors his slam attacks. if either himself or his master is severely injured, he will use his breath weapon to lower visibility, change into carriage form, and steal his master to safety.

Breath Weapon: A Deceptive Construct's breath weapon is a 30 radius spread which acts like a fog cloud spell.

Illusory Horse (carriage only): A deceptive construct may at will create the illusion of a horse and a driver as it moves along on its own. It may also choose to talk "through" the illusion. This ability functions as Programmed Image, except that control over how the image functions is dynamic, and tied directly to the Deceptive Construct's thought processes. 10% of all Deceptive Constructs created may also create an illusory footman.

Carriage Form: As a full round action, a Deceptive Construct may assume the form of a carriage (see Player's Handbook under vehicles and transport section). He may move on his own without any help, or allow himself to be pulled in order to keep his identity under wraps. He may change back into his humanoid form as a full round action. The transformation is not like polymorphing or an illusion, it happens as the body of the Deceptive Construct physically reconfigures itself by bending, folding, and some limited wood shape magic, therefore True Seeing does not reveal its true nature, though it will show magical auras.

Force Field: A Deceptive Construct has a permanent shield spell effect on it. It may be supressed with a successful greater dispel magic.

Intelligent Item Abilities: A creator may add intelligent item abilities, but no other abilities, to a Deceptive Construct.

Ironwood affects a Deceptive Construct as normal. Warp Wood slows it for 1d4 rounds.

Construction
A Deceptive Construct must first be built of pure oak. It begins its life in humanoid form, albeit a more generic version of it. It only takes on its final form when the creator uses special magic to cause the proto-construct to assimilate the carriage's form, destroying the carriage in the process. The look of a Deceptive Construct varies with the type of carriage used as the base. Then the magic that gives it sentience is cast upon it, and finally it is given the ability to move and to assume its carriage form.

Cost to Create: Still working on that.
Caster Level: I'm with Monte Cooke on this one, giving items a caster level requirement was a stupid idea.
Feats: Craft Construct
Skills Used: Craft (woodwork)
Spells Required: Programmed Image, Anmate Object, Fabricate, Fog Cloud, geas/quest, whatever it takes to create intelligent items

Up Next: The Ballista and Catapult Deceptive Construct.

Oh god, I remember reading about that back when I was doing monsters from bestiaries. I still don't know if I could stat it out without resorting to naming its attack "Flaming Crap of Doom".

I've been thinking about statting it ... on the (im)Mature boards.
