1001 Places to Put a Mimic [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-22-06, 06:37 PM Let's face it, the treasure chest, while infinitely amusing, has been done to death. So, let's get those creative (or adhesive) juices flowing, and start the definitive list of places and ways to stash a surprise mimic.

1. Set it up against a wall, disguised as a door. To be even more devious, hide the all-important Secret Door behind it.

2. Disguised as a small pile of treasure, set slightly apart from the main horde.

3. Make it a toilet. If a PC chooses to take a dump...well...you can kind of guess the rest. (Psuedopods... :P )

4. Every other floor tile in the room is a mimic. Devilishly fun!

5. A mimic of a major artifact. The Hand of Vecna? Here? I'm not suspicious!

6. Have a mimic mimic some food. It would be neat to have a battle with mimics posing as food, and all of the silverware etc. as animated objects.

8. Some piece of wall with a lever on it :P. Preferably close to a gate, pit, or (more or less obvious) trap.

9. A bed. It's hard to actually get something, but when you do, it's minimal effort.

11. Mimic a cloak...don't attack 'til it is worn!

12. Mimic a throne--sit on that, will you?

16. Mimic a painting (preferably a portrait). Even if it doesn't attack you can play havoc with the players' minds.

35) A sack of feed for the adventurer's mount.

05-24-06, 10:04 AM I'm terribly sorry to ruin the fun here, but a mimic can't drastically change his size, so objects like helmets and capes are out of the question. To make up for this terrible loss of fun, however:

53) A piece of ceiling with some kind of hanging lamp. (Imagine the lamp coming down to gobble up a hapless character!)

54) A piece of wall with a face with an open mouth on it. (Remember that face in the wall which, if you'd tell a lie while holding your hand in the mouth, would shut its mouth? That effect.)

55) A gazebo. (Watch out, Eric!)

a closed sarcophagus in a vampire's lair (the entrance to the real sleeping chamber is hidden, this one's a fake)
A large mirror on a wall (the mimic is actually changing its coloration to match the room, try having the reflections not quite match up to get the players curious)
A large planter in an arboreum or greenhouse room
A pillar that appears to have a Magic Mouth spell on it.
A bean bag chair
A rockslide covering a barely-visible passage behind it
a big pile of rags
A big pile of bones
An altar
A raised dais with a sword stuck in it
A wheelchair (good wtf factor)
A safe (Picture the party rogue with his ear to the thing, trying to listen for clicks)

05-30-06, 09:05 PM You know, most of you seem to forget that a mimick, while it can change shape, can't alter the amount of space total it occupies, so you can't have herrings, windows, food, etc. unless they're gigantic bay windows, banquets, or icthyoid entities large enough to attract attention on their own.

Here's an idea

114: rigging, rope, tree root, or other really long line thing. Trip up anybody crossing a half-mile half-inch or so thick wire of mimic.

115: A corpse-littered cottage
