| Mandarbgrim04-24-06, 07:49 PM | If Erinyes (Or any other devil.) summon baatezu do those add to the CR of the encounter or to the experience earned? I thought I read before that it didn't and was already calculated in, however...the thought of throwing an Erinyes at the party and having her summon 4 bearded devils worries me a bit. It would seem like an exceptionally hard battle for CR 8. Does the Infernal Wound supernatural ability possessed by the Bearded Devil's stack? Meaning, if someone is hit multiple times by a bearded devil do they begin to lose 2,4,6, ect HP or does it top out at 2 per round per character stricken? I'm pretty sure it doesn't stack, but find it odd that it isn't spell out, or perhaps it is that old "bonus's or penalties from the same source don't stack" rule implied... Thanks |
| Shemeska the Marauder04-24-06, 07:53 PM | A fiend's summoning ability is already calculated into its CR, so if they do summon something, their CR doesn't change. And yes, I believe such wounding abilities do in fact stack. |
| dok04-24-06, 09:25 PM | If Erinyes (Or any other devil.) summon baatezu do those add to the CR of the encounter or to the experience earned? Nope. They don't. Per the SRD entry for the monster special ability Summon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#summon): "No experience points are awarded for summoned monsters." the thought of throwing an Erinyes at the party and having her summon 4 bearded devils worries me a bit. It would seem like an exceptionally hard battle for CR 8. 1.) the scenario you describe (summoning 4 bearded devils) would only happen about 1 time in 8. Half the time, the Erinyes would spend a standard action to use a spell-like ability that did nothing. 2.) It's a Spell-like ability, which has a default caster level of the creature's HD unless otherwise noted. (which it's not) So a dispel magic from an 8th level caster has a 40% chance of sending all summoned devils away. On a similar note, the summons is the equivalent of a 3rd level spell, so having a a lesser globe of invulnerability in place prior to the summons is solid protection against physical attacks. 3.) They're summoned creatures; a lowly protection from evil prevents them from making physical attacks, and that's all Bearded Devils can do. Does the Infernal Wound supernatural ability possessed by the Bearded Devil's stack? Meaning, if someone is hit multiple times by a bearded devil do they begin to lose 2,4,6, ect HP or does it top out at 2 per round per character stricken? You could rule it either way, really. However, since it requires a caster level check or Heal check to stop the bleeding, I think the ability doesn't need to be cumulative. In general, if it doesn't say it stacks, it doesn't. |
| DungeonMaster04-24-06, 10:02 PM | 1.) the scenario you describe (summoning 4 bearded devils) would only happen about 1 time in 8. Half the time, the Erinyes would spend a standard action to use a spell-like ability that did nothing. A spell like ability follows all the rules for spells they references and I'm pretty sure in either 3rd or 3.5 the summon ability references summon monster which is a 1-round action. So the erinyes would spell an entire round trying to summon and could be disrupted. Bleeding is cumulative in 3rd edition. Otherwise we agree on all other points. :P |
| Mandarbgrim04-24-06, 11:20 PM | That is what I was thinking..interesting though. From a reading of Protection from Evil..it looks like it only stops natural weapon attacks...bearded devils use Glaives as well as claws. |
| dok04-24-06, 11:30 PM | Bleeding is cumulative in 3rd edition. No. The Wounding weapon property is cumulative, because it explicitly says it is: Multiple wounds from the weapon result in cumulative bleeding. The 3.0 Bearded Devil does not have such a statement, and neither does the 3.5 Barbezu. But yes, Summoning takes the same time as a summoning spell, and protection from evil only stops natural weapons. |
| mvincent04-26-06, 04:05 PM | the thought of throwing an Erinyes at the party and having her summon 4 bearded devils worries me a bitAs mentioned, that would require a lucky roll (and sometimes that just happens). Note though: if you set up a staged encounter where the Erinyes had already summoned her allies, you could give XP for the allies also (a recent FAQ entry supports this). This would also let you declare which allies she had summoned (without rolling). Does the Infernal Wound supernatural ability possessed by the Bearded Devil's stack? That is an excellent question. Normally, stacking issues only apply to penalties (not damage), so things like multiple poisonings and damage would affect you multiple times. The infernal wound certainly seems no different (i.e. it is damaging rather than applying a penalty). One could possibly interpret the line "An injured creature loses 2 additional hit points each round" as indicating a specific condition (and conditions aren't normally cumulative), but "injured" isn't actually defined as a specific D&D condition (it's just used as a normal word here). |
