| OverzealousMephit07-04-05, 10:04 PM | Hello, I am a huge fan of both the 2nd and 3.5 editions of Dungeons and Dragons. Now unfortunately for me the players I DM have no real interest in playing/learning the overly complicated 2e, which is a shame because I miss many of the features of it. One such feature is the fairly large amount of monsters that I guess just did not make the cut. I've had plans to convert every monster missing from 3e for sometime now, and as such need your help. I'll scan the Monster Archive on these boards to see if the monster shows up, and if not I'll convert it fully to 3e. What I need help with in particular, is challenge rating. The two systems are quite different in that regard and I will more than likely screw it up in some way. Of course, any comments, questions or critique about the monster are welcome. Now without further ado, I bring you the first monster converted. The giant race of merchants, the Arcane. http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/6796/arcane9dq.gif ARCANE Large Outsider (Extraplanar) Hit Dice: 10d8 + 20 (66 hp) Initiative: +6 Speed: 30ft Armor Class: 18 (+1 Dex, -1 size, +2 natural, +6 +1 chain mail Base Attack/Grapple: +10/+15 Attack: +2 Long Sword +13 melee (2d6+3) Full Attack: +2 Long Sword +13/+8 (2d6+3) Space/Reach: 10ft/10ft Special Attacks: Spell-like Abilities Special Qualities: Spell Resistance 21, Racial Telepathy Saves: Fort +9, Ref + 8, Will +11 Abilities: Str 12, Dex 12, Con 16, Int 21, Wis 18, Chr 19 Skills: Appraise +20, Bluff +19, Diplomacy +21, Disguise +17, Forgery +18, Gather Information +17, Intimidate +19, Knowledge (Arcana) +18, Knowledge (the Planes) +18, Profession (Merchant) +17, Sense Motive +19, Use Magic Device +19 Feats: Improved Initiative, Negotiator, Persuasive, Quick Draw Environment: Any (Urban) Organization: Troupe (1 Arcane, 4 body-guards) Challenge Rating: 7?? Treasure: Wand of Lightning (5th), Wand of Hold Person, Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds, Scroll of Dominate Person Alignment: Usually Neutral Advancement: 10-15 HD (Large) Level Adjustment: - A lanky creature, about as tall as an ogre and half as wide stands before you. His skin is an unusual shade of blue, and he is dressed in garments as fine as any noble. The Arcane are a race of merchants who travel the planes in search of magical items. Not much is known about their origins and not much more is known about the enigmatic creatures themselves. What is known about the arcane is their cunning ability as merchants. They are neutral in every sense of the word, selling to both sides in a conflict without qualms, and taking no responsibility for their customer's actions. Those who deal with the Arcane often consider them to be shrewd businessmen who are known for fair prices and a cool demeanor. Those who threaten or blackmail the Arcane will find themselves out of luck in future dealings. An Arcane will never raise his hand in vengance or anger, for he realizes that there are better ways of extracting revenge. COMBAT For creatures of their size, the Arcane are quite frail and weak. They are very non-combative, though they will defend themselves if seriously threatened, they prefer to talk or buy themselves out of any trouble. It is not uncommon at all to see an Arcane accompanied by several body-guards when he is dealing with customers. When pressed into combat, an Arcane is not adverse to using his large amount of magical items including wands, scrolls and similar items. If an Arcane fears for his life, he certainly has no qualms using his spell-like abilities to make a hasty retreat, abandoning his former allies. Racial Telepathy(Su): Arcanes possess a unique form of telepathy. Upon being injured, every Arcane in existance immediately knows the extent of the wound, who the assiliant is, and the location of the battle. Though the other Arcane will most likely not seek revenge, their attitude towards the perpetrator shifts to unfriendly regardless of what it once was. Spell-like Abilities: 3/day: Dimension Door, Invisibility Caster level 10th. Alright, any help with the Challenge Rating would be appreciated. |
| Contrast07-04-05, 11:15 PM | The Arcane was brought into the third eddition with the Manual of the Planes, though it was renamed "Mercane" to avoid confusion with Arcane Magic. It can be converted to 3.5 by using the conversion tools on the official Dungeons & Dragons website. |
| babysamurai07-05-05, 05:35 AM | You should check out the enworld website, they have done some great conversions for many 1st and 2nd edition creatures (I especially like the Baphomet conversion). |
| Seraph of Babel07-05-05, 08:26 AM | Some of us converted the planescape monsters over the planescape board. See http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=307692 Also, check out http://www.enworld.org/cc/converted |
