| Dandder2711-11-06, 05:31 PM | If there was an army of constructs are there any published constructs that would take the place of the average human soldier (CR 1ish)? If so were can they be found? Thanks in advance |
| Korone11-11-06, 05:39 PM | Other than the warforged, which are only 'semi' construct, I doubt there is any. Construct are normally made too strong to have a CR so low since their duty is above average. Although, nothing's stopping you from doing a Cr 1 construct. |
| Insane Pixie11-11-06, 06:06 PM | With their immunites, and bonus hp, a CR 1 construct would have to be very small (warforged are living constructs, and lose a lot of the benefits). For example, a regular, Medium-sized construct with Str 10, Dex 10, Con -, Int -, Wis 1, and Cha 1, would have 25 hp because of his bonus hp. Small-sized with the same stats would still have 15 hp. However, one idea I was going to implement into my own campaign was to use constructs like the Trade Federation droids, out of Star Wars. If you were to create a construct like them, with the 'living' subtype, they'd be about CR 1 (balanced against a human warrior, CR 1/2). |
| Return of the Flumph11-11-06, 06:38 PM | There are those dreadguard things from the MM2. They are CR 2 or something. |
| Ocom11-11-06, 06:48 PM | Probably the nearest would be the Maug from Fiend Folio p121. Other than that you could use Clockwork Menders from MM4 p29 |
| runestar11-11-06, 09:12 PM | Waterdeep has these guardgoyles, which are gargyoyle shaped constructs, cr2 or something...:P |
| dengarbountyhunter11-11-06, 10:36 PM | Modrons (those ultra-lawful constructs from Mechanus). |
| RavenDrake11-13-06, 02:59 PM | Alternately you could have an army of animated suits of armour via Animate Objects(or an analogous effect). At CR 2 a basic medium Animate Object construct is about as simple as you're going to get, and would fit well with the Army motif. |
| mvincent11-13-06, 03:32 PM | are there any published constructs that would take the place of the average human soldier (CR 1ish)? Small animated objects (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/animatedObject.htm) should suffice, and could be in any shape you desire, like: 1) auto-crossbows with legs 2) animated halfling skeletons 3) Robot dogs that shoot bees from their mouths etc. Other sizes of animated objects could provide support roles. |
| Teron Gorefiend11-13-06, 03:38 PM | Modrons (those ultra-lawful constructs from Mechanus). *Looks around nervously for any sign of Shemeska.* They're outsiders. |
| boozerker11-14-06, 12:18 AM | Shouldn't need small constructs. What about an army of C-3POs? They should be piece of cake :) |
| Insane Pixie11-15-06, 11:30 PM | Shouldn't need small constructs. What about an army of C-3POs? They should be piece of cake :) Immune to all mind-affecting effects, poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, necromancy effects, critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, energy drain, any effect that requires a Fortitude save, death from massive damage, and 20 bonus hp for being Medium. Not a piece of cake. As I said before, the problem with non-living, human-sized constructs is that they're going to have about five times the hp of a 1st level human warrior, plus all the great stuff above. So, unless you create some sort of weapon-attracting glass man, there is not going to be any kind of Medium, non-living, CR 1 construct. |
| obrysii11-15-06, 11:35 PM | Not to mention that, if they're Animated Objects, they keep their Hardness scores. Adamantine suits of armor are quite nice for that. |

But, we're talking about actual constructs you'll find in a game here. Most specifically, constructs built to serve in an army. Like you said, would you be afraid of an army of C-3POs? No; you'd make an army of something combat-effective. |

They appear as human sized figure’s made of stone and wood. These constructs always carry a heavy pole axe. Warrior constructs have no noticeable features, each of them looking like a combat practice dummy. Central Processing (EX): All Constructs bearing the Citadel Mark within 100 Miles of the Central Processing Unit are in constant communication. If one is aware of a particular danger, they all are. If one in the group is not flat-footed then none of them are. No construct in the group is considered flanked unless all of them are. Inside this tube his a high tension, spring loaded, three fingered hand. The hand grips whatever objects (usually stones) can fit in the tube. It twists its arm rapidly to pull back and c0ck the spring before firing. These are construct's I used as basic defenders of a magical Citadel. This is about as low as they go on the totem pole, I believe one should be about a CR1. Multiple enemies of course will add to the CR. |

Hey, the OP wants an army of constructs to replace soldiers. You culd adjust C-3POs until they're an equal threat as a CR1 soldier. Maybe a spellcasting to summon or create this army went goofy, and the constructs are low quality but at least each lasts as long as a soldier in battle. Just a fun suggestion. |
| Bluehero11-17-06, 12:55 AM | Thre's always the paper golems from dragon # 341. Not exactly the most general or durable of soldiers, but they're CR 1 and they're cheap. Not to mention that it would be very interesting to see a huge army of paper soldiers marching at you! |

| JiCi11-17-06, 09:22 PM | Dread Guards can be your footmen. What's best is that they can be made from any armor, shield and weapons, so a dread guard made of a bastard sword, full plate/mountain plate, steel tower shield could be a killer sight. Cavalry can easily be completed with dread guards mounted on clockwork steeds, brass steeds or equine golems. Archers can be filled with Thayan Golems. If you still have no ideas, go with effigies made from human soldiers, heavy warhorses, etc... Siege Golems (from Cityscape) work perfectly, as do animated ballistas, mangonels, trebuchets and bombards (from Stormwrack). |

The only, only, only, only, only, only reason that there IS a CR 1 Medium construct published (Warforged), is because they are living. On another note, Drag. Mag. = cheese. |

Mag. = cheese. 1st level Wizard, 1st Level Fighter, 1st Level Cleric, 1st Level Rogue. Between the four they could at least do 30-40 points of damage at some point to a creature with an AC of 13. The 1st level characters I ran this against destroyed it in 1 round. That's why I used CR 1. The archer was a little more tricky, they had to close with it before they killed it. |

It's obviously pointless, like trying to talk physics to a brick wall. |

| TheDarkLord11-18-06, 11:11 PM | I've finally decided to stop arguing in this thread. It's obviously pointless, like trying to talk physics to a brick wall. The HP's were not 27, its Actually 25 that was a typo on my part. Were we arguing? Missed that one. And yes sometimes my wife refers to me as a Brick Wall, no need for insults. I ran 5 different encounters with said constructs using characters levels 1-3. I don't know maybe it was my players and the fact that maybe some were using spells that were not core (still DnD and no homebrew), but at level 1, four of them seemed to consistantly beat it in first and beginning of the second round. CR's are wierd that way, unless you actually play around with said creature before writing it off as "No way thats a CR1" you might find out how easily a creature with no intelligence can be to beat. The Central Processing is what makes this critter hard to beat anyway, most of the time they are in groups of 10-12 at the least, and I was only using one with no other constructs around. Should I have made it a swarm type thing then? I'm open to suggestions on any improvements that can be made to said creatures. I could get permission from my players to post the rest of the said construct army. These were supposed to be the grunts. There are several different types of warriors and archers as well. Many of the Warriors at higher HD turn into pretty much massive steamrollers while the Archers are huge siege engines of sorts. But anyway, if you could see some improvements that could make it an easier CR1 let me know, I'll gladly take the advice of popular opinion. |
| robertliguori11-18-06, 11:44 PM | Well, by the book, it's easy. Apply the effigy template in Complete Arcane to a human warrior1, which is CR 1/2. (You should apply it to an elven warrior1 for +1 AC and initative, but that's needlessly cheesy). You get a CR 1.5 critter, which you can round any way you choose. Call them CR 2 to fight straight-out, and CR 1 to out-think, out-maneuver, or out-sneak. |
| Slagger the Chuul11-19-06, 12:12 AM | Should I have made it a swarm type thing then? They're too big to be a swarm, but if you've got access to the Dungeon Master's Guide 2 you could make a mob of them using the mob template. |
