| E-Arkham05-04-04, 09:02 PM | ... and right into an anti-magic field. Normally this would suppress his supernatural abilities (such as that nasty Trap the Soul ability), but he has an extraordinary immunity to magic and magical effects. Will that immunity prevent the anti-magic field from taking effect and suppressing his supernatural abilities? And will the anti-magic field suppress his ability to deal damage via his touch attack (which is powered by negative energy)? Chances are good my group is going to run into a demilich soon, so I wanted to get some feedback on this -- and "by the rules" answers would be more helpful than other types. Punchlines would also be welcome. <g> Thanks in advance, Kep |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.05-04-04, 09:35 PM | Generally anything that channels negative or positive energy is magical. An immunity to magic effects probably wouldn't work unless antimagic field allows SR, which I think it doesn't. Check the wording on it. |
| Shukufuku05-04-04, 11:46 PM | If his magic abilities are supressed, then it won't be able to move. I believe that the demilich's fly is supernatural. So the character might be able to hack at the head while it's immoble. Just think of the crazy trap ideas: "You find a skull laying on the ground with lots of gems in it... want to pick it up?" |

| Shemeska the Marauder05-05-04, 12:13 AM | Sure the demilich may himself be immune to magical effects. But his spells aren't immune to the effect of the antimagic field. Any of those spells of his are going to be worthless inside that field. As for his fly ability being (Su), wasn't there a bit of erratta about that at some point? |
| Melles, Lord of Badgers05-05-04, 07:39 AM | and the batnder says "whoa, whoa, demiliches fly, not walk! unless he rolled into the bar, that makes no sence" fine, smarty bartender:"thank you!" a demilich flys into a bar and goes on a killingspree! bartender: O_o> OoO > >oO > >o< > >_< > X_X |
| Will Brandiman05-05-04, 07:51 AM | Any demilich worth it's salt will have epic spells which, IIRC, function just fine in an AMF. Well, sort of. From the SRD: Antimagic field does not automatically suppress epic spells as it does standard spells. Instead, each time an epic spell is subject to an antimagic field, make a dispel check as a 20th-level caster (1d20 + 20). The epic spell has a DC of 11 + the epic spell’s spellcaster level. If the suppression check is successful, the epic spell is suppressed like any other spell. If the dispel check is unsuccessful, the epic spell functions normally. |
| Mr.Black05-05-04, 11:14 AM | This is from the epic handbook FAQ. The demilich can still fly and deal damage (but not paralyze) with its attack. The demilich description in the Epic Level Handbook says the entity has magic immunity, which is an extraordinary ability. The description says that the demilich is “immune to all magical and supernatural Epic Level Handbook FAQ 5 4/4/03 effects,” then proceeds to caveat that statement, allowing three magical effects to hinder or harm it. Not included in that list is any mention of demiliches being impeded by antimagic field. If a demilich enters or is forced into an antimagic field, what happens? While it’s safe to assume that any magical enhancements, spell casting ability, and supernatural effects the entity cast on itself would be suppressed while the being is in the field, would the demilich itself be harmed? Would its “natural” attacks and mobility (fly, specifically) be compromised? Though a demilich is not immune to antimagic, neither is it in any way vulnerable to antimagic; nothing special happens to the creature if it finds itself within an area of antimagic. It can still fly and its attacks still work—except that the paralysis effect is supernatural and therefore suppressed. The demilich description says the creature has a flying speed of 180 (perfect), or the base lich’s supernatural flying ability, whichever is greater. What is “greater?” Also, does this mean a demilich with a supernatural flying ability will be immobilized in an antimagic field? Any demilich has a natural ability to fly at a speed of 180, with perfect maneuverability. If the base lich had a supernatural flying ability, the demilich has that, too, and can use either its supernatural flying ability or its natural ability. It will do so only when the supernatural flying ability allows it a higher speed, and even then it might choose to use its natural ability if its supernatural flight allows for less maneuverability. Should the demilich’s supernatural flying ability ever be suppressed, it still can use its natural flying ability. |
| E-Arkham05-05-04, 01:32 PM | Thanks for the responses, all. >>>Any demilich worth it's salt will have epic spells which<<< Absolutely, but at least we won't have to worry with the Trap the Soul routine. I think we can deal with those; the Soul thing was practically guaranteed to grab at least half the group. Still going to be a tough fight -- that's a ton of touch damage per round and we won't have our own spells or magic items, either. <g> >>>...and says to the bartender, "You should've seen the other guy."<<< <cackles!> Kep |
| Cornholio05-07-04, 06:34 AM | Really? Where did you find that FAQ again? I always thought that if a Demilich flew into an antimagic field, you had yourself a christmas tree ornament. |
