Hey everyone, i don't use the monster boards very much but I've got a question.

As the end to a very highly powered evil campaign arc, we've gone through each layer of hell, beating various enemies along the way to meet our patron, Asmodeus face to face, who offered us a boon each. My dread necromancer character, confident and cocky, as always, asked to become a unique, independent devil (it was a big campaign, and he has more charisma than asmodeus does). Unfortunately the dm and I are unsure what to stat it as. We're at level 20 and do not have any rules for advancing the dn any further, so i'm trying to template, rather than multiclass.

We want something similar to the succubus, a charisma based humanoid at most large size (preferably medium) but male and lawful. The harvester devil came closest, but we wanted something that had no specific area of expertise or fixed place in hell. The dm generously allowed me to ignore racial levels up to 1/2 my hd (10). Obviously, its got to have a Level Adjustment.

Does anyone have any suggestions from monster manuals/splatbooks or homebrew material that might help us? Any input would be most appreciated.

Duh... Azmodus gives the player his wish, of course.

Ask for the player's charecter sheet, turn him into a Mane, and when he complains, tell him he's unique. Just like everyone else.

Evil isn't nice or fair.

Firstly if 'Asmodeus' actually grants the intended wish, he probably doesn't have that power to, because thats not Asmodeus. Reguardless of how useful he's been... I doubt the real Asmodeus would give him that since its such a cocky character. This is after all an archfiend who upon winning a war in hell he started and masterminded, cast out his one true supporter.

Secondly I'd imagine the fiendish template. After all, you don't get many fiendish humans.
But independant unique devil? Asmodeus turns you into a mane and throws you out of hell. Independance outside of Asmodeus IS unique among devils. Assuming Asmodeus is even a devil (Long story there, one school of though is this: Asmodeus is an avatar of one of the two creators of the lower planes, who currently resides in the pit, below the city Asmodeus rules from. I wouldn't suggest fighting the being in question though, it takes up half the lower planes in length, at least), in which case being independant is unique, period.

So what you get depends on whether your DM wants to be nice, or be in character. If nice, I still say fiendish or half-fiend template (lots of cha-driven abilities), since you don't have to get a unique template to act like its unique in-game.
If the DM's in character... roll up a new PC.

Your a Dread Necromancer right? Aren't you already going to turn into a lich eventually? And I don't see how some serious LA is going to help a spell caster.

Personally, i'd ask for some impossibly ancient magic items, preferably one without serious side effects. To get the who incubi thing going, get an item that'll grow you some boney wings and some DR/silver.

Get the epic handbook, 21st level and above just grants you some powerful feats every 5 levels or so.

Thanks for the input

1. ah, manes. No, its strongly in asmodeus' best interests to not screw this follower of his over (plus we have various 20th level adventurers watching, which is dangerous to anyone). I didn't write down the exact wording, but includes keeping stats and class features. I didn't exactly expect asmodeus to go down without a fight here (i've heard the stories) so i've kept a few things up my sleeve (one even involving glasya!).

2. Very nice. I'm noting this one down for later, but i'd have to give up my lich template to use it.

3. I do feel that asmodeus can grant this 'wish' (and more importantly, so does the dm), since he controls promotion and demotion in hell. More what i'm asking for is his help here, not for him to do it all by himself. I'd be disappointed if the dm didn't have a trick up his sleeve (it is an evil campaign, i'd be heartbroken if it didn't involve a tpk by the end), i'm entirely expecting and even 'wanting' some plot hook or difficulty here. Half fiend's a nice idea, which i really should look more into, and probably will. It'd save so much paper work.

No spellcasting progression here, so it wouldn't help much. I suppose i could take 10th level slots (but i've got no metamagic feats) or epic spellcasting, but i really don't want to, someone else in the party has that covered. Really what i want to do is turn down my power level, since everyone else has a LA, and i'm outpowering them by too much already. I want them to feel more in the game, but also want some cool, mostly useless abilities for myself in the meantime, and being (more) unkillable since that doesn't wreck balance. You're right about the lich thing. An incubus spellstitched lich i will be.

At the moment i'm leaning on a revised devilish incubus type creature, all the stat bonuses and such but no summoning, no wings and a few less frills. Either that or a half-fiend. The +16 cha is calling out to me though... Grabbing that plus unholy toughness boosts my hp past 700... With hide life and a phylactery :D
