Optimator 10-12-06, 02:05 AM	My brother suggested that the Tarrasque should have a chameleon tongue with huge range, like 1000 feet or more, springing out at some high speed (26 bodylengths per second maybe. Tongue Resource (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/05/0519_040519_tvchameleons.html) 26 * 70ft = 1820 feet per second. 1241 miles/hour. Maybe too fast. Whatever, it's DnD). Some options include big bludgeoning damage, a chance to stun, improved grab with a big bonus due to sticky saliva or something, and, even then, maybe the severe whiplash from being drawn into his mouth would be a save-or-die fort save effect. Not a silver bullet, but it might rain on a few cocky, flying PCs' parade. I just really liked the image of this, so I thought I'd share it with y'all.

Even the enlarge spell doesn't increase a creature's speed. Point is, arrows can travel faster than 1241 miles/hour, but only for a short distance before losing speed quickly. A tounge is less sleek. Don't forget also that speed is relative to actual distance. If a small chameleon's toungue could physically extend 26 body lengths away, by the end it would likely have slowed down considerably. So a tarrasque's toungue might stretch out to 1000 feet, but it's actual range should be about 50 feet (so it incurs a -6 attack penalty for targets at 200 feet, for example). A Tarrasque's Dexterity is high for their size -- Dex 16, 1 point higher than a regular tiny lizard. Strange.

DOH! So tired couldn't do math properly. My bad, thanks Raymond_Luxury_Yacht :tiphat: Anyway, the tongue's 1241 mph listed by Optimator is almost 10x faster than a bow. Imagine a tongue making a sonic boom? :D

If my math is correct: 300 feet per second x 60 seconds in a minute x 60 minutes in an hour ÷ 5280 feet = about 205 mph. Impressive, but not a sonic boom.

Its actually variable, depending on the density of the medium it is travelling through. In air at sea level it is roughly 760 mph, at 50,000 feet AGL its roughly 650 MPH. Check Six, Shakespeare
ArochanoX 10-20-06, 06:58 AM	Whip causes a sonic boom. So If tarrasque's tongue is a colossal+ whip, the range would be around 200ft. (Just estimation). Which would be enough to keep medium ranged spells and their casters away.
