In the description of the grimalkin (MM2), it says: "A grimalkin bonds with one master and remains his or her loyal companion for life." But there´s nothing mentioned about training or taking one of them as improved familiar, so what would you say is it possible to take a grimalkin as a cohort/familiar/pet/something else and at which level respectively using which (cohort) level adjustement?

In the DMG a blink dog is a possible choice for a cohort. It has 4 HD and a level adjustement of 2, making it an equivalent to a normal level 6 cohort.

A blink dog can use dimension door once per round as a free action, a grimalkin can use polymorph self in the way. Dimension door and polymorph self, both are 4th level spells, so do you think it would be okay to a grimalkin is an equivalent to a level 6 cohort, too?

I would actually make it roleplay issue, with the grimalkin bonding to the master it likes best. After all, it is an intelligent creature and can make up its own mind. I wouldn't require a feat, and just consider it a roleplay award, with the grimalkin remaining an NPC run by the DM.
