| ArchmageOmega09-19-07, 03:26 AM | For those of you that don't like the new stat block, I'll try and post this in the old format too (but that'll have to wait until tomorrow). I mainly need help checking the CR and the multiple natural weapons. Skaungth CR 4 NE Medium Aberration Init +3; Senses blind, blindsight 120 ft.; Listen +10, Spot +3 ----- AC 15, touch 13, flat-footed 12 (+3 Dex, +2 natural) hp 22 (4HD, d8) Immune gaze attacks, visual effects, illusions, sight-based attacks Fort +2, Ref +4, Will +7 ----- Speed 20 ft. (4 squares) Melee 6 tentacles +6/+4/+4/+4/+4/+4 (1d4) Space 5 ft.; Reach 15 ft. Base Atk +3; Grp +3 Atk Options – Special Actions kinetic blast ----- Abilities Str 10, Dex 17, Con 12, Int 3, Wis 17, Cha 5 SQ – Feats Multiattack, Weapon Finesse, Combat Reflexes Skills Listen +10 Treasure standard Advancement 5-8 HD (Medium); 9-11 HD (Large); 12 HD (Huge) Environment Temperate Land Organization Solitary ----- Kinetic Blast (Ex): As a standard action, a Skaungth can emit a blast of pressure that can throw creatures and objects away from it. This affects a 30 foot long by 30 foot wide cone. Anything caught in this cone is thrown back 10 feet, or half that with a reflex save (DC 13). If an obstacle prevents the completion of an opponent’s move, the opponent and the obstacle each take 1d6 points of damage, and the opponent stops in the space adjacent to the obstacle. The save DC is constitution based. ----- What looks like a 6 foot tall tube of pink flesh is shambling towards you. There is a large mouth-like opening on the top and three wrinkled appendages on each side. Dungeoneering DC 14 - This creature is called a type of aberration called a skaungth. It looks like there may be something more to those wrinkly appendages. In addition, it does not appear to possess any sensory organs. DC 19 - The tentacles of a skaungth are capable of stretching out to about three times the height of the creature. It is reported to be able to keep its foes away from its body where it can make the most of its reach. A skaungth is blind but is capable of detecting the presence of other creatures around itself. DC 24 - A skaungth is capable of emitting a burst of pressure that can throw creatures and objects away from itself. It is also has very good hearing, making it hard to sneak up on. ----- A skaungth is not very intelligent, but it is also not animalistic. It tends to focus its tentacles on a single target, but may divide its attacks if its feeling threatened or panicked. It tends to use its kinetic blast on anything and everything, moving at least, that gets within 10 feet of it. Typically, a skaungth won’t attempt to eat anything that’s still alive, but it does prefer a fresh kill to older meat. It will attack anything it can sense moving when its hungry, which seems to be most of the time. It will attempt to run away if it seems to be losing a fight, but since it’s fairly slow, it will often continue to fight even while fleeing. While not particularly rare, a live skaungth can be sold to certain collectors and researchers for up to about 1,000 gp. The tentacles can be harvested from a dead skaungth (a DC 15 survival check). These can be used for various purposes and are worth about 40 gp each. |

| ArchmageOmega09-21-07, 05:15 PM | No comments? So it's perfectly balanced the way it is? |
| ArchmageOmega09-28-07, 04:23 PM | After a brief playtest (just this vs. one character in an empty environment), I have a question or two. Should a CR5 creature be an even match for a gestalt Fighter/Wizard 1? (As in, the match came down to luck. The fighter/wizard was left with no spells and 2 hp when he killed this thing.) Also, when stuck in the middle of a 15 ft. reach (10 ft. away) what actions (mainly movement) can you take that doesn't provoke an AoO? Finally, should I give this Combat Reflexes, or would that raise the challenge too much? |
| Xiuhcoatl09-28-07, 06:12 PM | A Gestalt Fighter 1//Wizard 1 should meet a CR2 evenly in battle. All-in-all, it seems closer to a CR 3 to me. |
| ArchmageOmega09-28-07, 07:55 PM | Even with 4 HD? Any suggestions on ways of evening it out a little? I don't mind it losing 1 CR, but I don't think I want it to be that weak. I know improving its stats and giving it Combat Reflexes could make it stronger, but I also don't want to make it too strong. (I don't really want it to be above CR 5.) |
| Xanaphia_Undomiel09-28-07, 08:25 PM | A level 1 gestalt character is about CR 1.5, so it is too high CR. |
| Xanaphia_Undomiel09-28-07, 08:27 PM | I'd estimate CR 4 or 3. If it ambushed a party, it would be very dangerous. |
| ArchmageOmega09-28-07, 11:30 PM | Would you call it a solid CR 4 with Combat Reflexes? |
| ArchmageOmega10-20-07, 03:20 AM | I'm about to use this creature in a game Sunday and I'd like to try and get a few more comments on it and another at least one more pair of eyes to make sure my latest changes haven't messed something up. Mainly, I'm changing it's Weapon Focus feat to Weapon Finesse and giving it Combat Reflexes as a bonus feat. I'm also giving it another two points of Dex. Thanks for any comments. Edit: Oh yeah, can it use its kinetic blast in an AoO? I don't think it can, but I'd like to be sure. If it could, it'd be a much more dangerous opponent. |
