| obrysii10-12-04, 09:34 PM | My DnD group...do not read! For everyone else, enjoy, and please critique this massive foe. The Walking Mountain Colossal Elemental (Earth) Hit Dice: 300d8+6000 (7200 hp) Intiative: +2 Speed: 2,000ft* AC: 38 (-40 size**, -2 dex, +80 natural) Attacks: Bite +225, 2 Claws +220; Tail Slap +225 Damage: Bite: 12d6+40; Claws 10d6+20; Tail Slap 24d6+60 Face/Reach: *** Special Attacks: Breath Weapon, Trample 30d8+60 Special Qualities: Fast Healing 20, DR 50/--, Magic Immunity Saves: Fort +172, Ref +98, Will +105 Abilities: Str 90, Dex 8, Con 50, Int 20, Wis 20, Cha 20 Skills: ? Feats: Improved Initative, ? CR: ? A dragon-like beast appears on the horizen. It is larger than most cities, and to any standing near it sees as it moves extremely quickly, covering miles in a single stride of it's massive form. No size catagory could possibly give justice to the mountainous creature. A tower sits on it's back, and it is covered in rock and stone. The Walking Mountain took three generations of evil dragons to forge and create...and one hundred souls of Great Wyrms to finally awaken to power. Despite it's odd creation method, it is not a construct, but rather an Elemental, the land manifesting it's own will over the massive creature. It was built as a weapon of mass destruction, the Walking Mountain is a true foe to be reckoned with. Nothing but the most powerful of creatures can even come close to fighting the beast. Combat The Walking Mountain merely wades into combat, often it's very movements can crush villiages and destory its enemies before it even becomes aware of it. Breath Weapon: Cone of Boulders, 30 miles, 20d10 bludgeoning damage, Reflex half DC 180. The Walking Mountain can breath every 1d4 rounds. Magic Immunity: Despite being an Elemental, the Walking Mountain is immune to all magic and psionic powers. Nothing short of a deity can harm the Walking Mountain through magical power. *With each step, the Walking Mountain can literally move miles. However, given it's size, it can often take a while to move over a battle field. In fact, battles can be taken place ON it without it even noticing. It's speed is 2000 feet/round. **I put a -40 size penality to AC because...it's hard to miss something that's the size of a mountain. ***The Walking Mountain is literally too big to stat in the traditional sense. It can attack anything within 10 miles of it as it slowly moves. It's space/reach would be 50 miles/10 miles. Edit: I changed the speed, as 25 miles per round equels 15,000 miles per hour :mymy: |

You do realize that thing sneezes and the Tarrasque is dead.....right? :weep: Ah, yes. In fact, the creature was inspired by the very idea of those rocks of dragons in Eberron animating, and then munching on the Tarrasque. |
| Incensius10-13-04, 05:24 PM | :twitch: :twitch: :twitch: you're just plain evil.... |
| obrysii10-13-04, 06:01 PM | Yeah. Othewise, does it make any sense in terms of it's stats? Any idea for feats? What about it's CR? |
| Hammerhead10-13-04, 11:33 PM | This reminds me of the land giant in Slayers guide to giants. It is a giant 10 MILES tall that is CR 90. I would guess this is even higher CR |
| The Vorpal Tribble10-14-04, 01:25 AM | What I'd do is turn it into an area. A monster with a magical city on its back that walks around the entire planet continuously. This may take a hundred years each time, but it gets there. Stories are passes down generation by generation near its path to keep away and not build near it... or maybe by now its path is a chasm going about the entire world that has been worn down by its mighty tracks. Maybe have a monestary on its back, or perhaps a conclave of psions. The legendary place where Elans are produced? Need to have people who daily see a new part of the world living upon it, always eager to see new things. Perhaps even raiding parties who live off of those they pass nearby, and then have to hurry off on speedy mounts to get back to it. |
| obrysii10-14-04, 06:42 PM | well, basically, this creature, in my campaign, was "built" over a peroid of 6,000 years....and then one hundred great wyrms sacrificed themselves to bring life to it, and while they wanted to simply have the greatest engine of destruction...the fact it was made up of so much earth that when it awoke, it became sentient, as an elemental instead of a construct. Now, after it's lay dormat for a couple thousand years, a bunch of evil dragons have decided to awaken it again, and use it for their own terrible deeds. |
| Brent10-14-04, 06:56 PM | 1.I'd say the immunity to Psionics/Magic is a bit much, I'd make the damage reduction 50/+8 and mayb just give it energy resistance. (Most characters that are going to be fighting this beast should have +8 weapons anyway...) 2. A hundred Dragons SACRIFICED themselves to build this? Why? Sure they wanted a creature that could tank the hell out of anything, but why? Would a HUNDRED Dragons really sacrifice their lives for something that powerful, when a hundred dragons (10 dragons even) banded together could kill just about anything? I think the plot could use some touching up. |
| obrysii10-14-04, 07:52 PM | The hundred souls were what granted it such hefty magical immunity, and the fact it basically is a mountain, is why I gave it DR 50/- Clearly, this thing is more powerful than ten or even one hundred dragons (not including the Epic dragons!). It is suppose to be a nigh invinciple creature of mass destruction. In terms of my own campaign, the way they will defeat it will actually to have the cleric beg her deity to return to her (as do to recent events, she had abandoned him and lost her clerical powers), and he will return. And yadda yadda help defeat it. |
| Devourer of Dreams10-14-04, 08:03 PM | CR 576 |
| The_one_wit_a_reason10-14-04, 08:31 PM | dragon soul powered light bulb pings above head the dragons could not be dead simply inside the elemental controling it and the dragons could have followers who live on the elemental, the personal army of the elemental evry 400000000 years it wakes up to kill off any thing on its back\ head\ tail it then gos and kills rival dragons theres yer story have fun (brain exeplodes again) :turkey: :turkey: :turkey: :turkey: :turkey: |

| obrysii10-14-04, 09:12 PM | What about sacrificed other dragons that were weaker that would work :D |
| ArchmageCZ10-14-04, 10:02 PM | You should add this monster to "1001 ways to know your a evil DM" DM: "You walk forward and suddenly the ground begins to shake" Barbarian "I Stab down" DM:  Barbarian: :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! :OMG! |
| Kiirnodel10-23-04, 02:46 PM | I have a new type of size called "Titanic" Space is 10*10 squares. Give him Awesome Blow, Cleave, Improved Cleave, Power Attack, Epic Toughness...blah blah |
| Melpomene10-23-04, 03:00 PM | I would say, aside from everything else, you might want to just keep in mind that the elder god Azathoth, who makes the D&D pantheon look like children, has less than 2,000 HP.... |
| Teron Gorefiend10-23-04, 03:29 PM | Heh... this reminds me of a silly idea I had... an entire mountain range turning out to be the dorsal spines of a dormant, buried monster. |
| Azzedar10-23-04, 08:00 PM | Here's my two cents: Physics is a damn peculiar thing in that it doesn't exactly work the same on different magnitudes of size... When something large like a planet blows up, its not the same as when you stick an M-80 inside a nerf ball. It takes a long time and happens relatively slowly. Likewise, when you try to determine where and what an electron is, quantum physics comes into play and the particle exists in several places and can exist in places that is technically can't exist because of the uncertainty princable. etc etc. SOOOOO....this also happens in DnD Combat is not made to factor in monsters that are several miles in size. The breath weapon, for example, has a ridiculous DC due to the HD and constitution of the monster. It makes no sense given all DnD mechanics... also, given that DC, this means that the monster would be blanketing an area of approximately 7000 square miles or so. BLANKETING. That is a lot of boulders to breathe out...not to mention that for them to reach 30 miles in one round requires them to travel at 18,000 miles per hour. The fact that something so huge would move so fast is also ludicrous The concept of this monster is completely unnecessary unless you plan on making your campaign world HUGE and the PCs amazing... you may be able to salvage the idea by taking the Vorpal Tribble's advice, which turns it into some sort of huge land-based Zaratan. Much cooler, much simpler. |
| Korone10-23-04, 08:06 PM | Oh.. oh.. OHH !.. Me like. This things like make an appearance in my campaing, that's sure !! But that makes my most powerful creatures of my games.. weak :twitch: I'll have to boost them.. again.. And.. no burrow speed? This things could go from an end of the earth to get to the other one by digging through it. That's a nice image  The large mountain start digging in the earth, the ground start shaking as never before. Even for his size, it diseapear in the ground really quickly, letting an hole of inimaginable proportion into the ground. Lava and smoke coming out of it exageratly. :ayyyy!: |
| obrysii10-23-04, 08:37 PM | The speed is proportional to it's size. Running, it only covers half of a body length in an hour. The "covering miles in a single step" is flavor text and the actual speed is listed. Physics don't have alot of real meaning in DnD, so something the size of a mountain could exist. Deities could defeat it. Not through sheer HP (as Prismatic Great Wyrms have more HP than most deities), but through intelligence, magic, and overall special powers. If I were to put this into my campaign as a (serious) threat, I would split it up into about a dozen "minibosses" for the group to fight. |

| Purkake10-24-04, 08:54 AM | It's not that hard to beat get 1000 lv1 commoners make them permanetly fly, that give each as many alchemists fire's as they can carry and blast away. You should really give it energy immunity, and a fly speed  I can already immagine someone making an epic spell to summon this thing :D |
| obrysii10-24-04, 09:32 AM | You should really give it energy immunity, and a fly speed  No, no, that's for when someone gives it the Kaiju template ;) |
| Purkake10-24-04, 11:22 AM | That's it so much for sleeping this year  |
| Lucre10-24-04, 04:07 PM | Frankly, there's a lot here that doesn't make sense. First of all, unless you have PC's in your party that could conceivably fight this thing, why bother making stats for it in the first place? Just say it destroys whatever your storyline requires it to destroy, and don't worry about rolling dice. Second, the Colossal bonuses and penalties are enough. Even though this thing is much bigger than even a Colossal creature, a Colossal creature is already big enough that nothing significantly smaller would ever actually *miss* it. You don't need to grant an additional AC penalty there...the only thing that should really change for creatures bigger than Colossal, IMHO, is face and reach. You could maybe make a case for a better grapple check bonus, but there's no reason to give it a further AC penalty. How do the dragons control it? Not even a Great Wyrm should have access to any magic that this thing could possibly fail a saving throw of any kind against. You should definitely give this thing a trample attack. Also give it some kind of insane tremorsense ability or the like, otherwise it won't be able to *find* anything 10 miles away to use that reach on. Complete immunity to magic and psionics makes no sense at all. Give it very high spell/power resistance, sure, but the only beings that typically have immunity to magic that I'm aware of are constructs. This is an elemental, presumably with the pros and cons thereof. |
| DeathMagus10-26-04, 07:48 PM | Without hardness, anyone who can hit a 38 DC (not impossible) can just teleport onto its back (you gave no mention of how it could counter that) and just stab away, doing miniscule damage until it dies. It needs either a hardness facter (pretty hefty) or some way to attack those on its back. Then again, it's debateable about whether or not one could get close enough to be able to teleport, but then again, since it doesn't notice most people, you might have a chance. |

One could concieveably teleport onto it's back and proceed to engage in melee with it without it being really able to counter attack. |
| toomre10-27-04, 12:31 AM | Lucre's first comment was right on the money. This is a plot element, you clearly do not want to allow yor PCs to beat it, so why bother making up its hitpoints and feats and saves and the DC of its attacks and so on, just focus on the story and the look of it. I mean if the group actually comes up with a way of beating it (and it's not an imposibility) it's not like you'd let them kill it. I would add though that you should make sure that when your PCs first make their futile attempt to face it, they're not all completely killed. It wouldn't be fair to them. After all it's not like they've seen its stats, they might assume they can do something to it and you shouldn't kill them outright for it. Now if your PCs are so uber that they actually should have a shot at beating this thing w/o appealing to DM/divine intervention, then please post the group's composition. |
| Lina_Inverse11-06-04, 03:52 AM | wtf?not even greater deitys could kill that.hell it would prolly take down half the faerun pantheon without worry o_O at once mind ye.....and thats alot of gods..... |
| Jharviss11-23-04, 09:15 AM | Anything over CR 100 might be too much for this guy. Sure, he might be that way against average people... but against my main character who's around 46 or so, he wouldn't stand a chance. I simply 'dispel' his magic immunity and barrage him with my quickened, maximimized meteor swarms and he's doomed. Or better yet! Dispel his magic immunity and 'Dominate Monster' ... oh my god, the ideas.... |
| Makaris11-23-04, 03:50 PM | That's something you don't fight. It's a force of nature. |
| toomre11-23-04, 07:28 PM | Anything over CR 100 might be too much for this guy. | Jharviss11-23-04, 10:54 PM | Well, :thinks: not really, but I HAVE to believe a simple item could be used to do something of that sort (and by simple, I mean epicly simple). However, the Occult Slayer does have that as an ability, if I recall. In either case, if you can get past the magic immunity, this guy ain't worth too much. Especially, if you can get some kick*** transmutations on yourself to turn yourself into a killing machine, then beat him up (but never with magic). |

| runestar12-11-04, 07:26 AM | So what role is this creature supposed to play? Some sort of doomsday device, dues ex machina or just another monster to be overcome? Hitting it wouldn't be a problem, actually doing enough damage to overcome its dr would be one. No magic, well, I guess its back to good old fashioned whacking then. In the drow novel series, dissolution?, didn;t the duergar use some sort of grenadelike substance that burns rock? Would it work on this creature? You just need lotso it. |
| Rakasha#512-11-04, 08:53 AM | Well dude you've impressed me you have that but if you want ANY WAY THAT ANYTHING BUT A PANTHEON WORTH OF GREATER GODS TO DESTROY IT THEN FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AT LEAST TAKE AWAY ITS MAGIC IMMUNITY: SPELL RESISTANCE MAYBE BUT NO IMMUNITY, oh and I like the extra ac penalty though I think it should be more, and maybe it is a plot by ur priests to kill the gods MUWAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAH!!!!!!!!!!!! :schemes: :schemes: :schemes:    |
| obrysii12-11-04, 10:13 AM | So what role is this creature supposed to play? Well, in a regular game I suppose it could be the doomsday device that the group has to stop from awakening. In mine, it was the device for the cleric to regain her powers after a huge personal conflict with her diety. |
| happycows12-21-04, 02:02 AM | My lvl 20 gnome illusionist could be the living crap out of this thing so long as I get the npc lvl 20 gold and access to all magic items. Magic immunity only goes so far. I think the god's are still harder to fight. |
| Silent_spy12-21-04, 10:59 PM | it's stupid. its existence would cause the extinction of all life on the planet. Seriously. That thing.... OK, let me explain why this doesnt work: How was it created? its could kill a few dozen greater gods at once, so i'm not sure who has the power to make one, and who would, given the power. After it is created, either all the known multiverse would unite to eliminate it, or be killed. The PC's would already be dead (in fact, their distant ancestors would have been killed by it, and the PC's never born). It could plow into the ocean and cause tsunami's. and it has a reflex save of 98. jees, if its so nimble, give it evasion as well. that way, should a wizard try to fireball it (which cant happen, i know) it would dodge it. And, if this exists, then there would have to be an equivilant for all the other elementals (ocean elemental, sky elemental, infernal elemental of chaotic flaming death) which would naturally mean all the other planes woud want an uber avatar of doom too, causing the entire sum of existance, +1, to explode. twice. |
| Loren Pechtel12-22-04, 01:39 AM | My ECL 26 NPC wizard hears about this scourge. She surveys the situation and heads off to town. She buys 1000 gallons of lamp oil in barrels and enough portable holes to hold it. (I'm not going to bother with the math to figure out how much capacity is needed. I suspect 1 will do it.) She teleports to the back of the critter, somewhat behind the peak of the mountain. She hauls out all the barrels of lamp oil and busts them, letting the oil spill everywhere. She flies up above the oil field and lobs flasks of alchemists fire around. My ECL 28-1xp wizard casts presdigitation to clean the soot off and asks the sage if she can use some of that great pile of xp she can't use for levelling for epic spell research instead. (Note: 1000 gallons is extreme overkill. 300 would do it with virtual certainty but she's the cautious type and she wouldn't want it to live because of a too-deep puddle that didn't burn fast enough.) |
| obrysii12-22-04, 09:56 AM | (Note: 1000 gallons is extreme overkill. 300 would do it with virtual certainty but she's the cautious type and she wouldn't want it to live because of a too-deep puddle that didn't burn fast enough.) How much does that do? Otherwise, it doesn't look too bad a way to kill it. If it deals more than 20 damage per round (due to it's fast healing). I would allow it, if it works, since it's rather ingenius. |
| Ra-Tiel12-22-04, 10:55 AM | :uh-huh: :OMG! If you are looking for a way to kill this... this... this THING, just pray and pray and pray and... pray that your prayers reach the ear of a god of death who is just half-way interested in not allowing the world to be destroyed where most of his followers live, appear (or send in an avatar) and smack that (mountain-world-eating-monster?) thing with either the "(Mass) Life and Death" or "Hand of Death" (I think it is called so, don't have d&dg with me right now) divine saliant abilities: God of Death: "Oh tell me, vilest of all monsters, do you have a Divine Rank?!?!" THING: "Aehmm... no?" THING: *dies within an instant* God of Death: :bored: God of Death: *leaves for a vacation* Rule #1 of long-living PCs: never ever make the god of death (or any number of his followers, especially clerics, paladins (example: FR, Kelemvor) and favored souls) angry. It's bad for you now, and it's even worse for you when you're dead! |
| obrysii12-22-04, 11:08 AM | Rule #1 of long-living PCs: never ever make the god of death (or any number of his followers, especially clerics, paladins (example: FR, Kelemvor) and favored souls) angry. It's bad for you now, and it's even worse for you when you're dead! Heh, yeah. Unless it's my campaign...where the group is on quite good grounds with the 'god' of Death...to the point where they've attacked him and lived. Sure, they attacked him to knock him out of a spiral downfall, but hey. He's also the only 'god' in my campaign, so that could be why they're on such good grounds with him ;) |
| Loren Pechtel12-23-04, 03:02 AM | How much does that do? Otherwise, it doesn't look too bad a way to kill it. If it deals more than 20 damage per round (due to it's fast healing). I would allow it, if it works, since it's rather ingenius. Since it's spread out I'm figuring it would rapidly light the whole mass on fire, most of the damage being done in the last round. (Picture a vast puddle of kerosene. Throw in something hot enough that it doesn't go out--what happens?) If I had to model it, I would say the 3 ignition points (she would be able to throw 3 flasks in one round) burn in the first round, 9x that in the second (the fire can spread every direction at first) and then it doubles every round thereafter until the oil is all burned. The total burn would do an average of 28,000hp of fire damage. |
| obrysii12-23-04, 10:21 AM | The total burn would do an average of 28,000hp of fire damage. :mymy: Yep. That'd do it. |
| Khelvaster01-03-05, 10:55 PM | Firstly, a hulking hurler could beat it. No contest. IIRC, the new average damage is over a trillion, so blah. Also, according to the absurd carrying stats, the hulking hurler could pick it up, assuming it is normal rock, and, using a fly spell, fly it about 40 miles high, and then throw it into outer space. The reentry heat should cause it to burn to death. Even if it doesn't, you can rinse and repeat. I assume it can't attack people who are carrying it. |
| obrysii01-04-05, 08:30 PM | If the DM were ever to allow such a broken PrC  |
| Killermiller03-15-05, 03:21 PM | A lvl.20 party can buy lots (and I mean LOTS!) of Stonebraker Acid fly over t thing with magic or something and pour down the entire stuff on the things back. It does 3d10 damage to stone and I think that thing has some tone in it... It will die ......... But if it has no stone inside it then you got me. |
| katkov11-13-05, 11:07 AM | for the story maybe the earth decided it needed a representative(sp) so it convinced the dragons to summon it |
| sandskimmer11-13-05, 04:19 PM | You might want to check out the Genius Loci in the ELH for some ideas on running "land" creatures as they are entire surface areas (or possibly even entire planets) with intelligence. Also, since this is obviously an epic monster, you might get more/better ideas from the ELH board if you post it over there. |
| sandskimmer11-13-05, 04:55 PM | I also had a thought about its AC. A -20 special size modifier should suffice. From a game-mechanic perspective, that would allow even a 1st level commoner with an average str to hit an a roll of a 2 or higher. It's natrual AC should be more like +90, since you literally have to get through solid rock, dirt, tree roots, etc. An AC of 38 just isn't on a really epic scale, which the rest of this critter is. |
| savant_warlord1311-13-05, 07:32 PM | The speed is awfully high, and you need to increase the trample damage, but good job |
| savant_warlord1311-13-05, 07:50 PM | Without hardness, anyone who can hit a 38 DC (not impossible) can just teleport onto its back (you gave no mention of how it could counter that) and just stab away, doing miniscule damage until it dies. | obrysii11-13-05, 08:20 PM | Wow. Talk about a ressurrected thread. :P I...haven't put much thought into it since I posted it so long ago. I think maybe I should try to rewrite the mechanics . . . now that I've matured a bit and learned more. |

| feartheinvinceblehamster11-13-05, 09:21 PM | Ah, aren't you the one who came up with...was he named cadapsi? the big dragon abberation. If I understand your style correctly, this thing will take tons of preperation and quests to defeat. My players could probably beat it, they took out a chicimec and a great wyrm black dragon today...without sustaining any damage :twitch: |
| feartheinvinceblehamster11-13-05, 09:48 PM | I can already immagine someone making an epic spell to summon this thing :D Something like, say..... SUMMON WALKING MOUNTAIN, AND THEN PROCEDE TO REANIMATE IT IF IT, IN SOME FASHION, PERHAPS INVOLVING A SWORD, DIES Conjuration(Summoning, Evil) Spellcraft DC: 4 Components: V, S, M Casting Time: 1 minute Range: 75 Ft. Effect: one insanely powerful creature that, if it dies, reanimates as an even more insanely powerful mummy. Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: none Spell Resistance: No Factors:To Develop: 18,000 GP, 4 days, 725 XP Seed: Summon(DC 14), Animate Dead(DC 23) Summon CR 100 elemental(+200 DC), Make Duration Instantaneous(ad hoc x10 DC), Animate killed Mountain as a 2,500,001 HD Mummy(+250,000,002 DC), Control 2,500,001 HD of undead(+250,000,002 DC), Mitigating Factors: material components is a 500,237,000 GP Emerald mined from the heart of the elemental plane of earth. This spell conjures forth an incredibly ancient being known as a walking mountain, detailed earlier in this post. It is permanently summoned into the world, and cannot be sent back to it's home plane, since it doesn't have one. It is under the casters control. If it dies, it reanimates as a 2,500,001 HD mummy under the casters control. ....................................... for this spell, I assumed approx. CR 100 Happy? |

My players could probably beat it, they took out a chicimec and a great wyrm black dragon today...without sustaining any damage :twitch: Yes, I came up with Tadasi (http://boards.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=396861) who, interestingly enough, could defeat the Walking Mountain quite easily. The Walking Mountain was defeated by an arrow granted by the "unknown celestial" (see Tadasi's flavor text) to the party's cleric. The party's cleric had witnessed an attrocity committed by the deity, and only by proving to the deity (very angsty type deity...) that she still had faith in his goodness did he grant her the arrow meant to slay the Walking Mountain. Meanwhile, the entire Army of the Dragon King had matched in to fight the Walking Mountain to no avail . . . the PCs alone were responsible for its' downfall (and only through role playing --good role playing, I might add--). |
