| Aurun08-24-07, 06:31 PM | Hello all I'm creating a monster called a Licker/Glycker (rubbish name I know work in progress) which sits on cavern ceilings with a long tongue/tentacle hanging down. The Tongue/Tentacle is covered in paralysing slime and when something walks into it, it wraps around its victim and drags it up to the waiting mouth. This is obviously shamelessly stolen from HalfLife (It also probably exists in some similar form in D&D but I only have MM1). I had a go at working out the monsters stats: Licker Small Aberration HD: 1d8+2 Init: 0 Spd: - Armor Class: 21 (+1 size, -5 Dex, +15 natural) Touch 6, Flatfooted (21?) Base Attack/Grapple: +0/+4 Attack: Tentacle (tongue) +2 melee (paralysis) Bite -1 melee (1d4) Full Attack: same Space/Reach: 5ft/0ft Special Attacks: Drag, Paralysis Special Qualities: - Saves: Fort +4, Ref -5, Will -1 Abilities: Str 15, Dex -, Con 15, Int -, Wis 9, Cha 6 Skills: Hide +10 Feats: - Environment: Relatively high cavern ceilings usually near water. Organisation: Solitary, groups 2-11, Mass 12-20 Challenge Rating: 1? Treasure: Standard Alignment: Always neutral Advancement: 2-5HD (medium) 6-9HD (large) 10+ (Huge (Mass)) Level Adjustment: - A translucent tongue resembling a steady stream of viscous liquid hangs from the ceiling. This tongue originates from what appears to be a stalactite until it opens revealing rows of inward pointing teeth. Lickers are subterranean creatures which to the unobservant appear to be little more than a steady flow of water streaming from a stalactite. Closer inspection reveals this 'water' to be a tongue ranging in length by anything from 10ft-60ft+ hanging from a creature resembling a squat stalactite around 3ft in diameter at the base and hanging 4ft. Lickers weigh 300 pounds. Most lickers prey upon small animals in subterranean areas which are often attracted by the bones and meat (and unedible items ie treasure) dropped by the licker. However almost any victim which succumbs to their paralysing tongue is inexorably dragged to their doom. They have extremely high natural armor from the limescale deposits which form over their skin (which also serve to camouflage them). A severed or badly mutilated tongue is withdrawn into the central mass of the licker where it takes 1d4 days per every 10ft to re-grow. Combat Lickers lie in wait for their prey waiting for it to stray into its paralysing tongue. The Tongue wraps around almost anything it comes into contact with but usually releases non-edible material quickly. A thick mucus coating the tongue acts both to stick prey to it and to paralyse through a combination of chemicals and stickiness. Once the victim is subdued the licker drags it up to its mouth where it begins devouring it, often dropping larger chunks to be dragged up later. Drag (Ex): Upon contact with a Licker’s tongue it latches around the opponents body. This deals no damage but drags the stuck opponent 1d10+3 ft (1d8 ft for creatures 2 size classes larger than the licker) each subsequent round (provoking no attack of opportunity) unless that creature breaks free, which requires a DC 15 Escape Artist check. A Licker can draw a creature within 5ft of itself and bite as a full action within the same round. A tongue has ¼ of the total hit points of the licker with a minimum of 2Hp and can be attacked by making a successful sunder attempt. However this does not provoke an attack of opportunity (as there is only one tongue). If the tongue is attached to a target, the Licker takes a -2 penalty on its opposed attack roll to resist the sunder attempt. Severing the tongue does no damage to the Licker. Paralysis (Ex): Those who contact the tongue/mucus of the Licker must succeed on a DC 15 Fortitude save or be paralyzed for 2d6 rounds. The save DC is constitution based. (Optional sticky paralysis exactly the same but DC is reflex, based upon strength (for stuff like WF)) Skills: Lickers have a +10 bonus on hide checks when in watery underground caverns due to their resemblance to natural formations. A couple of Variants: Mass/Ghuncklythal - essentially an amalgamation of many lickers which instead of dragging directly upwards drag towards a giant central mouth as mutiple tongues latch upon the target. Drooper - A single large unblinking eye sits directly in the middle of this monster which when it sees prey directly below, drops its entire tongue which is a large proportion of its bodymass. This technique attempts to bludgeon its prey to death/unconsciousness. The tongue also has a limited ability to flail in a melee attack. Hack Drooper - exactly the same as above but has a hook attached to end of tongue. Floor Licker - As normal licker but lives in recesses on wall and lies tongue accross corridors Shock Licker - As normal licker but uses electricity instead of paralysis Tree Licker - As normal licker but found in temperate forests attached to high branches of trees. (Usually overhanging water predominately preys upon fish.) Phew pretty lengthy post, feel free to criticize and any pointers or suggestions are welcome. Please bear in mind that this isn’t truly a monster to contend with however and is probably best used to make combat situations trickier or to put in very awkward locations. |

However, a nonability of Dexterity would seem to be treated more like the rules for inanimate objects (-5 AC from dex, -2 for being inanimate). You have the -5 AC from dex part, but not the -2 penalty. This is open to interpretation, however. |
