If you had a monster that dealt say d6 points of damage with its natural attacks, and then gave it monk levels, would the monk damage progression override it, or would the monster gain some sort of bonus to the damage, as it is already "proficient" with unarmed attacks? My initial thoughts are that it would simply override...

It should override. Whichever die is higher at the time, that's what it should do.

Remember, a monk fights with fists, kicks, elbows, & knees. If the monster has any/all of these at its disposal, it will be using all of them too, not just its claws.

Also, the monk's damage is from training. Any creature that goes through that training will learn how to do the same amount of damage, regardless of what natural weapons it has. Damage from natural weapons don't really show any type of training involved. They just do the damage because that's what they were designed for - nothing more.

Hope I made sense there...

It does, which was what I was thinking. :)

Cog, ask over on the Savage Species boards. I know it had rules in it for how to handle a monsterous monk and their damage progression, but I can't remember what they were. Ask over there, and you should get an answer from the books, or at least a referance to where to look.

Thanks :) I've just done that. I do have SS, but I couldn't find the info in there.

Found the answer on PG 106. It's as we thought. :)
