A much bigger tarrasque [Archive] - Wizards Community

30 feet is wimpy. The tarrasque is famously wimpy.

I need a bigger beast. I need something that can eat galleons in a single bite. I need something that can destroy a city in ten minutes. I need something that makes those who see it give a long pause, then turn around and walk away.

I need a 500 foot long tarrasque.

It needn't be uber--indeed, a beast of that size would be sluggish and not maneuverable. In the water, it's faster than a galleon, but out of it, a human can outrun it if it's not focused entirely on killing him.

But this is a city-eating dragon-slapping island-crushing monstrosity. I'll probably give it some form of defense against people just running up to it and climbing on on my own (think Sin from FFX--his body spawned monsters), but what about its basic stats?

Why not just stat up Sin?

Just times all stats by 10 and if its so big it will have uber HP so even if they do tons of damage they'll be crushed before they can kill it.

I believe you mean multiply, as times is not a verb. In addition, many stats cannot be multiplied by 10, and Koji said "It needn't be uber"

Upper_Krust, In his book "Immortal Bestiary Vol 1" has rules for advancing creatures to size larger than Collosal plus (Or Titanic, as he calls it) what you're talking about sounds like a brobdingnagian tarrausque.

You can find the book on EN world

there are two size categories in general use (that I know of) that are larger than colossal: Titanic and Awesome.

I do not know which is bigger or how they work.

Sin can be easily statted out as a low-rank deity. In FFX, he was supposed to be an entity born out of anger and hate for how lazy and lethargic humanity had become, with all the technology now available (Zandarkand). He possesses the aforementioned ability to destroy a city in less than ten minutes, although his method involves less crushing and more tidal wives/absorbing. The small, crablike Sinspawn you encounter at the beginning of the game are good for low-level encounters, or larger scale, higher-level encounters. Additionally, you can create a sort of "Sin-affected" template to be applied to creatures/monsters that have received his toxin.

500 foot long Tarrasque, eh? Well, that's pretty big. :D I kind of agree with you, though, in that the Colossal size shouldn't be the cap. And I never think of the Red Dragon listed in the MM as being only 20 feet long, anyhow(I'm 6 feet, so a very old red dragon is just over 3x my height in length? What?). It could fit in my backyard, by RAW. Just silly.

But, then, to stat it up as being of a really, really big size(I'm thinking f'ing collosal, Guildmaster), it'll need an entirely new stat block. The Strength modifier on that thing would be uber, just to make sense. And the Constitution wouldn't be too far off. But the Dexterity would probably take a large hit, and be pretty awful.

At that size, it almost seems like it would even be grand enough to gain the ability to fly throughout different planets(that's just the image in my head, since Sin was brought up). Now that would definitely revoke its title of "famously wimpy." :D

I believe you mean multiply, as times is not a verb.

Given that a lot of posters here don't have English as a first language, or aren't completely fluent, is there really need for an English lesson(purple_dragon_magess is from Africa, maybe we can let it slide because the meaning was the same, and I, personally, don't know how perfect her English is)?

Hunger is a unique (thankfully) monster that can devastate nations, even worlds, given time. It looks like a much, much larger version of the tarrasque, standing over one hundred feet tall, with spiked carapace capable of crushing castles. Hunger is the herald of a much larger, much more terrible creature, but most do not realize this, and believe Hunger to be the Ultimate Creature.

Combat

Augmented Critical: Threat ranges become 18-20, modifier to x3
Breath Weapon: Every 1d4 rounds, Hunger can fire a blast of raw energy from its mouth in a 20 foot wide line 300 feet long as a standard action. This deals 40d6 damage of unspecified type that ignores damage reduction, hardness and regeneration.
Destroy: Hunger deals quadruple damage to inanimate objects with its natural weapons, as well as bypassing hardness. Additionally, if Hunger uses a full round action to target an object of Garagantuan size or smaller, or smaller part of a larger object, that object or portion is totally destroyed unless it makes a DC 97 Fortitude save (Str based).
Frightful Presence: By simply being there, Hunger inspires terror in all creatures within 200 feet. Creatures with fewer than 5 hit dice die of fear (no save). Creatures with more than 5 hit dice are allowed a DC 68 Will to avoid being panicked for the duration of the encounter. If they succeed, they are instead frightened.
Improved Grab: You know what this does
Rend: If Hunger hits a creature with both claw attacks, it rends the flesh and deals an additional 12d6+35 damage.
Rush: Once per minute, Hunger may move at ten times its normal speed as part of a charge.
Swallow Whole: Creatures swallowed by Hunger take 8d6 acid and 12d6 bludgeoning damage every round. AC 37, dealing 100 damage to escape.
Carapace: as tarrasque

She is from a region of Africa in which English is quite common. Replacing multiply with times comes from laziness, not nonproficiency, as I have only ever heard Americans make the switch.

Why in the world would anyone want something that big?
If you want to build a creature that size, you should make an adventure out of it, because you'd probably need to accomplish a lot of smaller goals to defeat it (like doing damage to specific parts of its body, rolling balance to stay on it long enough to hit it, etc.).
CryoSilver

04-09-06, 08:14 PM
Ah, but that means a called shot system, which is bad. Very bad.

The DR 30/- is representative of that an arrow is basically NEVER going to hurt this guy. Let's break down the numbers:

Longbow: 1d8 x3. Critical max: 24. Can't hurt Hunger
Scythe: 2d4 x4. Critical max: 32. Does 2 points of damage to Hunger, whose Fast Healing is 75. In order to inflict damage on Hunger, 38 people would need to deal maximum damage with a scythe critcal in the same round. And that's to deal 1 point of damage.
Insane Pixie

04-09-06, 08:20 PM
If you plan on having them attack specific parts of the 500 foot Hunger, try making a map of his body. The characters can attack either the 5 foot of his body they're on, or any of the surrounding squares. Simple.
CryoSilver

04-09-06, 08:26 PM
100 foot Hunger.

Hunger is a 100 foot space (probably 100*50, but they did away with that in 3.5, I guess).

And where do you draw the line? Can they attack a 5 foot section of a dragon?
Insane Pixie

04-09-06, 08:39 PM
Yes, although Hunger is 100 feet, the author of the thread specified 500 feet.
CryoSilver

04-09-06, 08:41 PM
A 500 foot monster is not a creature.

It is a plot device.

At least a fairly epic party can destroy Hunger given time.

500 foot monster is getting extreme. That's like an acre sized creature.

There's a fair number of naval destroyers that aren't that big.
Insane Pixie

04-09-06, 08:44 PM
Looking back at your mentioning of attacking a 5-foot space of a dragon, I think you misinterpret my meaning. I'm not saying that the players should be able to make an "aimed" attack at a specific part of any creature. I'm saying that with a creature that is 100 feet long, with the climbing, the destroying, the dangers, a map of the creature back would be an interesting idea.

Areas outlined in red are slanted and require DC 20 Balance checks to stand on.

Green circles are horns; they provide cover, have hardness 40 and 250 hp each.

Purple squares are covered in smaller spikes. If you move through or stand in such a square, you take 1d8 damage.

The yellow circle is the head. Each box formed by the dots is a 5 foot square.

I love it. What about rules for gripping onto the horns on the slanted regions, to maintain balance?
CryoSilver

04-10-06, 11:14 AM
Let it be so:

A character adjacent to a horn, and standing in a slanted square may use both hands to hold on: he does not need to make a Balance check, but may not use his hands, and loses his Dexterity bonus to AC.

As someone else said, it's a plot device, not a fight.

They're most likely going to be treating this thing like a Skies of Arcadia Gigas, attacking it with a magically enhanced warship at first. They have a lot of options, but this thing is their ultimate enemy. Something like The Tarrasque could have been easily dealt with by a bored silver dragon or two. This is something that only the power of Remshear* can defeat**.

And thus, Ao did decend from the heavens, with all the gods of the multiverse at his sides. Thus did he cast the mightiest of spells, only to unmake this agent of pure descruction that threatened the very world. No creature across the world did not feel Ao draw his strength from them, and all felt the final word of power in the very core of their being as the spell was completed. The magical energies released caused earthquakes of mythical proportions, changing the very face of the world forever. When the energies cleared, the gods did look upon the fruition of their efforts, and as one proclaimed, "Oh ****!"

Check out the following, take one (or fuse two or more) and then customize your own monster:
- Epic Tarrasque (http://www.immortalshandbook.com/freestuff5.htm)
- Lavos (Brobdingnagian Teratoid Tarrasque) (http://d20npcs.wikicities.com/wiki/Brobdignagian_Teratoid_Tarrasque)

If you want to toughen up the tarrasque, but still make it a fight, not a plot device, it becomes rather scary if you slap on a template, even just one: Half-Fiend up the tarrasque (whose first action will be to drop Blasphemy on anything that comes close) ... Plus it gets wings, fixing one of its major weaknesses (but *raise the speed!* Gah! Why is something that big, and that strong, that sloooow?)

And if you want to make it reeeaaally scary, after that: add Half-Dragon. And a helllllacious save for the breath weapon. And it's now only slightly less intelligent than most people, and very wise.

And change out it's ridiculous waste of feats. Drop toughness(6) for Improved Toughness, Large And In Charge, Mobility, and Elusive Target. And then there's Combat Brute.

Now theeeere is something that makes you quake in your boots of flying, rather than just laugh about the time you wasted a CR20 monster at Level 15.

The Devourer is a 400 foot beast that vaguely resembles some sort of twisted Zegludon or aquatic dragon with four large, finlike legs. Its gray-brown hide is rough and thick, and its many fin-like structures bristle and wave in order to best catch the air or water. It bears six pure-white eyes along its triangular head, and what appears to be a simple nodule on its forehead slowly opens, revealing a massive, eyelike ruby within.

Combat

Augmented Critical: Threat ranges become 18-20, modifier to x3

Breath Weapon: Every 1d4 rounds, The Devourer can fire a blast of energy from its mouth in a 20 foot wide line 300 feet long as a standard action. This deals 40d6 damage, half fire and half divine.

Destroy: The Devourer deals quadruple damage to inanimate objects with its natural weapons, as well as bypassing hardness. Additionally, if The Devourer uses a full round action to target an object of Garagantuan size or smaller, or smaller part of a larger object, that object or portion is totally destroyed unless it makes a DC 97 Fortitude save (Str based).

Frightful Presence: Simply being in the Devourer's presence inspires terror in all creatures within 200 feet. Creatures with more than 5 hit dice are allowed a DC 68 Will to avoid being panicked for the duration of the encounter. If they succeed, they are instead frightened.
Improved Grab: You know what this does

Swallow Whole: Creatures swallowed by The Devourer take 8d6 acid and 12d6 bludgeoning damage every round. AC 37, dealing 200 damage to escape.

Ruby's Light: As a free action, The Devourer can begin to open its seventh eye, which is actually a powerful artifact. The process takes 2d8 rounds, though The Devourer is free to perform other actions during this time. Halfway into the opening process, the eye shines with a brilliant red light shines out of it. The Devourer is known to make a low grunting noise that sounds somewhat like a slowed-down whale's call. Once the eye is completely open, The Devourer must immediately take a full action to activate its power, which can duplicate any 9th or lower divine or arcane spell. Caster level is equal to 20+cha modifier. The Devourer generally uses this power for Meteor Storms or Reversing Gravity, though it has been known to summon other creatures or create undead from nearby corpses. Once the eye has been activated, it immediately begins to close (which takes another 2d8 rounds) and will not open again until it has completely closed. A Haste or Slow spell cast upon the eye (not the devourer) can halve or double the time it takes to open and close, though the eye will neither open nor close while under the effects of a timestop spell.

400 feet long beast that moves 60 feet in the water, where it is the wors it can be.

C'mon! That is like my dog moving half a feet in every six seconds!

If it is meant to be a fight, don't make it that big. If it is meant to be anything else, think that it has SOME speed!!

Hell, If I moved one quarter feet in six second (hey, over a feer per minute!) it wouldn't make sense.

That thing has +40 modifier on jumps just from strenght! So in battles on earth it would just jump like a kangaroo, CRUSHING it's opponents.

If you make a creature, I recommend making it move atleast 5x it's lenght in it's best element (water) and possibly a lot less (1x it's lenght?) on worst (ground).

If you think it makes it too good, just think of it as a... umm... 400 fukkin feet long monster that only gods can destroy or something... Wait a minute, that was exactly what it was supposed to be!

Big things move slowly. There's a lot more wind resistance to account for, as well as the fact that a creature that big would have a much higher weight to muscle strength ratio.

It's faster than the fastest galleon, in fact it's just under what an aircraft carrier can accomplish.

I'm sorry if I didn't just mash 99999999999999 for every stat, but I want this to be a respectable creature.

60 feet in 6 seconds = 10 feet/second = 600 feet/minute = 36,000 feet/hour = 6.8 miles/hour = 6.2 knots.

That isn't too bad.

Hmm.
Is it intentional that these guys don't have regen?
I just thought it odd, but it's okay if it was supposed to be that way. I thought the missing body parts might be beneficial to have if they were destroyed.

A question about the attacks bypassing damage reduction...
Do their natural weapons bypass all DR or only DR from objects?
And does that non-specified energy blast bypass DR/- or just up to Epic or whatever? (I only know of DR going up to Epic. =/ )

Fast healing regenerates missing body parts AFAIK, regen is only different in that damage is treated as subdual, which is not something I was interested in.

The DR that the Devourer has is not bypassable, and its bypassing hardness applies only to things with hardness (IE inanimate objects)
