| ozzfann066601-09-08, 02:56 PM | Hi everybody. this is my first time posting. I recently began DMing my own campaign and intend on using a Mind Flayer as a recurring villain but I just can't come up with a good name! can anybody help me out? |
| drunkendrake01-09-08, 03:54 PM | Try this: Fantasy Name Generator (http://www.rinkworks.com/namegen/). -Drake- |
| Talisman01-09-08, 06:49 PM | You can borrow any of the illithid names I've used: Mirixal, Thiloq, or Squlth. Whatever you use, be sure to say it aloud several times before game-day and make sure it doesn't have some bizarre rhyme or sound that would provoke laughter instead of fear. This also makes sure it's pronouncable..."Kyrxxachglth" looks like a fine, alien name on paper, but try pronouncing it. |
| pigknight01-09-08, 07:20 PM | Cthulhu |
| DebiHuman01-09-08, 08:46 PM | The monster could have a name in its own tongue and a name that's favored by other races -- a psuedonym. Just don't make it too difficult to pronounce or so silly that your players break out bad puns. some variation on "Ilsensine" is always good. Ilsensine is the name of the deity of the mindflayers in the Greyhawk setting. Debby |
| Echoes of Deception01-09-08, 09:33 PM | I've used Thrasn, Tsiikanrth and H'Carwyn, personally. You could borrow any of them. If you can figure out how to pronounce it, you can also use the name of the freak in one of my old campaigns. Toras'gorouansuuouha. It's totally unforgettable once you get the rhythmn on it right. I could also recommend the names Sulluushe, Ralghahve and Ilsizh. |
| DarkDerrik01-10-08, 09:25 PM | Xerxes or Squalx. Always put in an X or a Q for illithid names. That's how I do it. |
| Talisman01-11-08, 12:07 AM | Quux? Xeq? |
| ArgulFraster01-11-08, 11:34 AM | Zyd'Brg or Rtxulgk. I can actually pronounce both. Or perhaps Q'x'l'r'l. |
| 1 ton ghost01-11-08, 12:33 PM | i kinda' go w/ the flavor of the monster in question. w/ illthids, i'm thinking grey matter, so i cannibalize (heh) the namesake of a brain region. successful flayers i've used were "amygdalus" (amygdala), "med'ulix" (medulla oblongota) and so forth. |
| Jere_RB01-12-08, 09:05 AM | Blathcle. Churmule. Sthchultze. Or, when in doubt... Bob. Cuz, seriously, everyone loves Bob. |
| CryoSilver01-12-08, 11:57 AM | Don't give it a name; mind flayers usually communicate via Telepathy, so give it a name that can't be pronounced by humanoid vocal chords. Have it's "name" translate into a title, or a nickname. |
| ChaoticGood01-12-08, 12:32 PM | [M]ind flayers usually communicate via Telepathy, so give it a name that can't be pronounced by humanoid vocal chords. Building on this idea, it's voice could be uncomprehensible to human ears, manifesting instead as primal psionic scream of terror/rage/pain/etc. when beamed into a human's mind. |
| CryoSilver01-12-08, 12:44 PM | Building on this idea, it's voice could be uncomprehensible to human ears, manifesting instead as primal psionic scream of terror/rage/pain/etc. when beamed into a human's mind. Mind Flayers communicate in Grindcore? Sweet. |
| Demon_Paladin01-12-08, 03:30 PM | Ted. 'nuff said. |
