The four adventurers crept stealthily through the undergrowth of the swamp, all of them trying to ignore the prickling feeling of dread creeping down their spines. Their cleric clutched her holy symbol tightly, breathing whispered prayers to her god for deliverance. What had begun as a simple quest to end a goblin threat at level 1 had somehow, through their DM’s evil nature, become a huge plane-spanning crusade involving the destruction of a sentient race of carrots plaguing the multiverse. Even worse, they had all noticed their DM flicking open the monster manual just moments ago muttering something about dragons being “too easy” despite the fact the PCs were all level ten. Suddenly he snapped the book shut and reached for a small, previously unnoticed sheet of paper, wearing an evil grin. He began to narrate…
Their fighter motioned the others to stop and drew his sword. “Did you hear something?” he whispered. Before the others could answer a small creature plummeted from the forest canopy on to his head, knocking him to the floor. In the brief pause before the battle truly began (while everyone rolled initiative) they all took in the hideous form before them, with its evil, glowing red eyes: an Abyssal Dire Frog!

The Abyssal Dire Frog originates from 123rd layer of the Abyss. There it is the scourge of all the inhabitants. A couple of epochs ago the devils came close to winning the blood war, sweeping aside the unorganized demons. Then their leader, subject to one of the many betrayals and confusions surrounding any devilish army, mistakenly identified a certain portal as the way to victory. They never returned from the Frog Layer, as it has come to be known, there was just the sound of screams – and a quiet “ribbit, ribbit” emanating from the pit…

Combat:
The frog is deadly in combat, its favourite tactic is to mindlessly slam creatures and then run away rapidly. This can be dangerous in their home layer though: 1 frog – no problem, 3,000 frogs – ouch.

Special Qualities:
Poisonous (Ex): Any creature using a bite attack on the abyssal frog must make a fortitude save (DC 14) or suffer 1d4 points of temporary constitution damage, and again one minute later, regardless of the outcome of the first save.
Hop (Ex): When determining how far the frog jumps use a base speed of 30 feet. Maximum distance is determined as if height were five feet. In order to use the Hop ability the frog cannot take a run up.
Keen Senses (Ex): The frog has low-light vision and darkvision (60 ft.).
Resistances: The frog ignores the first five points of fire and cold damage.
Spell Resistance: The frog can shrug off even the most powerful of spells without flinching… so long as you only cast dancing lights, and you’re on a dead magic plane.

Special Attacks:
Smite Good (Su): Abyssal Frogs are feared far and wide along the length of the river Oceanus for this ability. When fighting a good-aligned creature the frog can summon up all that is evil and dark, intensifying the red glow of its eyes, and pour it all into one incredible attack that does – wait for it – a whole 1 extra damage! Of course this incredible effort drains the frog and it can only do it 1/day.

Any comments, suggestions, improvements - whatever - very welcome. If you really want to just say "kool" or "sucks" you can but please try to say why at least.

Thanks

I love the bits of humor you put into the descriptions!
Good write up too.
Great stuff.
The previous posts' idea of putting these things into a swarm...
Anyway, 2 thumbs up.

These things would totally rock against a hydra ... wow, and their potential breeding capacity means they could engulf worlds!

Thanks for the support! :) I really appreciate it. But I really don't believe that anything I've written is perfect. Any suggestions on improving it? (Oh and swarm 'em if you like, there's plenty to go around, free frogs for everyone!)

Well the Intro makes it sound like a drop bear, but otherwise...

You could make it 1D4-3, give it a fighting chance... lol

Hmm... familiar of Abyssal Dire Frog...

Gives you -2 to intelligence and a compelling feeling to catch flies on your tongue...

No, seriously, presumably it would quite like having a toad familiar plus a bonus to saves versus poison or something? I don't know.

Well the Intro makes it sound like a drop bear, but otherwise...

I take it someone else a part from me reads Pratchett then?
