A question about subtypes [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-02-06, 01:14 AM As the title suggests, I have a question about a few subtypes that I'm trying to work out.

What if, for instance, creatures from the Elemental Plane of Water (Merfolk/Tritons/whathaveyou) enter onto a material plane through a portal. Would they be considered Outsider subtype or Extraplanar subtype?

This has been nagging me for a while.

And any creature not on his native plane gains the extraplanar subtype. A merfolk, which is a humanoid (aquatic) born on the elemental plane of water and who somehow travels to the material plane (or any other plane) would become a humanoid (aquatic, extraplanar).

Likewise, your regular material plane half-orc would become a humanoid (extraplanar, orc) if he reached the elemental plane of water.

01-02-06, 01:31 AM "Type" refers to a creature's fundamental nature. Those don't change unless the creature does.

Subtypes usually don't change either, but the extraplanar subtype (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#extraplanarSubtype) is an exception. It applies to any creature that's not on it's native plane.

So tritons or water elementals or whatever else calls the Elemental Plane of Water its home would gain the [extraplanar] subtype if they're on any other plane. Most PC adventurers have the [extraplanar] subtype when they're adventuring in Hell, for example.

I've never used anything to deal with the planes, so this is kind of uncharted for me.

One more question:

Their children (if any) born on this material plane would lose the extraplanar, correct?

01-04-06, 06:51 PM That's a grey area, what counts as home plane and what does not. THe most obvious precident would be the half fiends/celestials, which don't normally have the subtype, but then again they have only one extraplanar parent.

It seems reasonable that a beastie concieved and born on the Prime Material plane would be native to that plane, but some circumstances may change this. Most of the time the question doesn't come up in any case, as only a few spells and abilities actually have any special effects on extraplanar creatures.
