| Razorcake10-06-04, 04:43 AM | Hello there, it states that when a said PC is swallowed by Tarrasque or Remorhazz or Angry Silver Dragon, they can escape by dealing damage (40 or so) to their stumachs or whatever, with most of the time, a knife. My question therefore is, do they automaticly do 40 or so damage when they simply say "I cut my way out with my +5 ooze bane dagger!" or do they need to do 40 damage "manually" by like, rolling the dice like a lot of times because getting 40 damage with a knife can take quite some time? More so, it seems logical Rogues and Assasins can use their sneak attacks and death attacks when inside a belly right? Or not? Thank you! |

THey have to keep attacking it until they've done enough damage. This could take a while. More so, it seems logical Rogues and Assasins can use their sneak attacks and death attacks when inside a belly right? Or not? DM's call, but I'd probably say not, since the target isn't Flat Footed, Flanked, or anything else like that (Other people's opinions will probably differ. That's fine with me). |

I'd allow SA damage, but I wouldn't allow a death attack. That would be just begging for munchkins who get immunity to acid, then go dive inside and just keep taking 3 rounds to DA. 2 if they have a wand of Haste. http://photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Xavier_of_Cormyr10-16-04, 05:03 PM | attack rolls are s must since the victim is being chewed/ digested. I imagine it'd be hard to concentrate while in some creatures mouth or gullet. Some creatures do state in their description that the victim "cuts his/her way out" of the monster, otherwise it is simply spit out. And I allow rogues their sneak attack bonuses... themonster doesn't have a dex mod for its mouth, and you can't target a vital area any better than being inside the monster! |
| Mirtek10-16-04, 05:29 PM | As the swallowed creature is basically engulfed by a mass of flesh and acid, and can't move as normal, it can't target any vulnerable spots. It can just hack and slash and hope to somehow find a way out. It's not a cave where you can move freely around, but a sea of acid with walls which are constandly shifting around you and trying to crush you. You can't aim at a vulnerable spot, as you neither know where such a spot is located (any creature swallowing living prey has an anatomy which makes the stomach not a unusually vulnerable spot), nor could you specifically aim at them even if you knew where the are. |
| haste910-16-04, 05:36 PM | Yes, but what about if the character that is swallowed hacked his way to the creature's heart, lungs or kidneys or whatever? They are close to the stomach of most things, so I would say that SA is possible, however unlikely due to the crushing acid damage each round. |
| Sucineri10-16-04, 05:53 PM | There is already a topic about swallowing/sneak attacking in the DM forum, and the Equipment forum. I would suggest the topic of swallowing/SA stop in this thread because like I have seen in the others..it will go on and on from 3-7 pages. Now on the other hand..the dealing damage thing. You treat it just like normal combat. You can only use a small/light weapon, or unarmed attacks. And you have to roll for damage every round as normal (AC is 10+1/2 natural armor). But you also take damage every round as normal from the acid/crushing damage. |

They are close to the stomach of most things, so I would say that SA is possible, however unlikely due to the crushing acid damage each round. That would explain a critical hit, but still don't enable to sneak attack. SA isn't just hitting a very vulnerable spot, but is hitting a very vulnerable spot in a very mean way :D SA is precision damage, as such you can't accidently score a sneak attack, you have to aim for it. But you can't aim for what you don't know where it is. A swallowed rogue might get a lucky hit at some vital spot while trying to somehow find his way out, but he won't be able to turn this lucky hit into a SA, as he didn't know what he was going to hit. Like I said: Being swallowed isn't like swiming in a cave, with room to move and to decide where to land your blows. You're hold between living walls trying to crush you, while swimming in acid. Being crushed you will have the walls all over your eyes, mouth, nose, and limbs, while your desperately trying to somehow cut a way out. |
