I recently purchased the Fiend Folio (the only other creature book I have is MM 3.0), and it defines the extraplanar subtype as a creature from another plane other than the one it is currently on (roughly). Many of the creatures in the book with the extraplanar subtype do not come from the Prime Material Plane...so why are they not outsiders (MM 3.0 defines an outsider as any creature native to an Outer Plane)? Can they polymorph spell (which can not be used to change to an outsider) be used to change to a creature with the extraplanar subtype? |

Outsiders are usually incarnations of some abstract moral-ethical concept, such as good, evil, chaos, etc. They are also spirits of various kinds, spirits of dead when at rest are petitioners, most dieties are outsiders, etc. Outsiders are also a more-than-mortal category for very out-there entities. Beings that are actually composed of ether and planarstuff rather than merely infused with it and inhabiting another plane are outsiders. There's as much differenece between a demon and a fiendish dire rat as their is between an earth elemental and a groundhog. |
