in our group we had an argument about templates, in example the lich. when you add the template to the base creature, do you roll hitpoints again with the new hitdice (eg. a 9thlevel wizard becoming a lich? do he keep his old hitpoints (9d4 + con) or do you roll 9d12 to obtain the new hitpoints)?

Well...

1. Last I checked, you need an 11th level wizard, but thats just me nit- picking.

2. I'd re-roll the Hit dice. Or just go with the average, and roll any future hit dice as normal. Assuming this is a PC thats doing it.

nope, itīs not a pc. itīs more an general question. the monstermanual states that you use all the statistics of the basecrearure exept where noted otherwise. and there is a change in hitdice mentioned but not in hitpoints.

since HD controls HP, a change of HD will change yuor HP... also since undead lose thier constitution score the HP they dirived from it in life go away (Changes to constitution always effect HP total when they occur.)

when ever soemthing changes HD reroll the total hp with new HD unless other wise noted (for example IIRC there is 1 template that says change all future HD to dx).
