| Ront Iron-Roar07-22-06, 08:27 PM | I've always found the prospect of being attacked by a Giant Moth frightening. Here's the Brain Child of that thought. Dream-Terror Lavae coming soon. Dream-terror Moth Large Magical Beast Hit Dice: 10d10 +20 (75) Initiative: +5 Speed: 20 ft. Climb 20 ft. Fly 60 ft. (Good) Armor Class: 16 (-1 Size, +6 Natural, +1 Dex) Touch: 10 Flat-footed: 15 Base Attack/Grapple: +10/+18 Attack: Wing +13 melee (1d8+4) Full Attack: 2 Wing +13 melee (1d8+4) and Bite +8 melee (1d6+2) Space/Reach: 10ft/10ft Special Attacks: Frightful Presence, Implant*, Poison, Poison powder, Nightmarish Display, Vexing Pheromones* Special Qualities: Blindsense 60 feet, Dark Vision 60 feet, Low-light vision, Immunity to phantasms and poison, Scent Saves: Fort +9 Ref +8 Will +6 Abilities: Str 18 Dex 12 Con 15 Int 6 Wis 17 Cha 16 Skills:Climb +12 Listen +14 Spot +14 Feats: Ability Focus (Nightmarish Display),Alertness, Flyby Attack, Improved Initiative Environment: Any Organization: Solitary or Pair, Mated Pair (1 Male and 1 female) Brood (1 female and 8-10 larvae), Dread (3-10), and Horror (11-20) Challenge Rating: 9 (Male) or 10 (Female) Treasure: None Alignment: Usually Neutral Evil Advancement: 11-18 HD (Large) 19-25 (Huge) Level Adjustment: N/A A massive black moth easily as large as a horse sits upon the wall of the building. Its long feathery antennae slithering back and forth as it sifts through the variety of scents upon the air. Suddenly those antennae stiffen in the direction of the party and the moths’ wings twitch sending flecks of black powder drifting down to the ground like ash. With another twitch those wings extend out and with a flap of those great wings the moth turns about a flurry of ash-like powder surrounding it as it flies towards its prey. Sickle-like mandibles flexing beneath large glowing crimson eyes. No one knows the origin of Dream-terror moths. Some sages believe these creatures originated from normal moths evolved and perverted through dark magic. Origin aside Dream-Terror moths have spread slowly through out the world but even then they are few and far between. With females controlling vast expanses of territory to maintain their broods of larvae and perfuming the area with their scent to attract males of the species. Males are always on the move searching for food and the next female to breed with. A normal Dream-terror moth is 6 feet long from antennae to the tip of its abdomen with a wing span of 12 feet. Males of the species tend to be more robust and thickly built then females and their antennae are larger and more feathery. Females however have far larger abdomens. Do to their similar ways of reproducing. Female Dream-Terror moths often compete with Spider Eaters for proper prey with the moths often seeking out and killing any Spider Eaters in the area. Unlike, their smaller and less intelligent cousins Dream-Terror moths do not hold any attraction to light what so ever. They find bright light particularly agitating and often attack any beings outright displaying a light source. During the day a Dream-Terror Moth finds a dark area to roost. Dream-Terror Moths cannot speak but they understand Common and Sylvan. Combat Dream-Terror moths usually begin combat by using their poison powder ability and then preferring to swoop in using their Flyby Attack to strike opponents not under the effects of their poison. If faced with opponents still awake and able to fight a Dream-Terror moth uses it Nightmarish Display to attempt to finish off still conscious opponents. Implant (Ex): Female* Dream-Terror Moths lay their eggs inside of creatures they have sent into coma from their poison ability of large or larger size. The young emerge about six weeks later, literally devouring the host from the inside. Poison (Ex):Inhalation, Fortitude DC 17, initial damage none, secondary damage opponent falls into a Nightmarish coma for 1d12 hours. For the duration of this effect nothing short of a Remove Poison Spell can awaken an opponent. Even when awakened a subject is fatigued and unable to regain arcane spells for 24 hours. Poison Powder (Ex): As a full-round action, a Dream-Terror moth can create a cloud of poisonous scales. The cloud spreads in a 20 ft radius from the moth that also extends 20 feet above and below the moth. Any enemy entering within this radius is immediately put under the effects of the Dream-Terror moths’ poison. Nightmarish Display (Su): As full-round action, a Dream-Terror moth can open its wings and expose a bizarre constantly shifting collaboration of color and patterns that any opponent within 30 feet of the Dream-Terror Moth who has a line of sight to the moth and can see the moth must make a DC 20 Will Save or suffer the effect of a Fear. This affect is treated as the spell cast by a 10th-level Sorceror. The DC is Charisma-based. This is treated as a mind-affecting effect. Vexing Pheromones (Ex): As a full-round action, a female* Dream-Terror moth can choose to release an invisible cloud of pheromones that affects all opponents within 10 feet of itself. All opponent within this radius must make a DC 18 Fortitude Save or be rendered under the effect of a Confusion Spell. This is a mind-affecting effect ability that effects any living corporeal creature with a sense of smell. This ability also extends to Vermin who are normally unaffected by such abilities. Skills: Dream-Terror moths have a +4 racial bonus on listen and spot checks and a +8 racial bonus on climb checks.. A Dream-Terror moth can take a 10 on a climb check, even if rushed or threatened. |

| Callahan07-27-06, 04:10 PM | Pheromone: If it's a chemical that gets inhaled it should be a Fortitude save not a Will save Poison should be contact poison. If it's an inhalation poison then simply being next to the moth would subject you to it's effects and being attacked by a weapon coated with inhalation poison should not effect the target. Otherwise it's a nice monster that could be mixed with poison resistant villains and also give the players access to a good poison suply once it's killed. |
| pileobone07-27-06, 04:29 PM | Hit Dice: 10d10 +20 (82)Should be 75. (10*5.5 + 20) Attack: Wing +13 melee (1d8+4 x2 plus poison) Full Attack: 2 Wing +13 melee (1d8+4 x2 plus poison) and Bite +8 melee (1d6+2)You don't really need to list the "x2", that is always assumed to be the default unless noted. Feats: Ability Focus (Nightmarish Display),Flyby Attack, Improved Initiative, Improved Natural Attack (Wing)Don't use Improved Natural Attack for a new creature. That feat is used when advancing monsters, if you want his wings to do a d8, just make them do a d8. It is your monster after all. :P Nightmarish Display (Su): Hmm, I'm not really feeling the Phantasmal Killer clone here. I like the idea of the ability, just not it's instant death. This creature already has a number of tricks up their sleeve without an insta-death. Personally I would drop the Frightful presence as I don't feel that it makes much sense, and add the fear effect to his instead of Phantasmal Killer. Implant (Ex): Female* Dream-Terror Moths lay their eggs inside of creatures they have sent into coma from their poison ability of large or larger size. The young emerge about six weeks later, literally devouring the host from the inside. For some reason this makes me want for the the females to have a Sting attack. But that's just me. Thoughts: Neat, a cool and scary moth. Feels a bit heavy on the abilities, but still cool. Good job. |

Otherwise it's a nice monster that could be mixed with poison resistant villains and also give the players access to a good poison suply once it's killed. I changed the Pheromone ability and I changed the poison so it only effects opponents with the poison powder ability. The original idea was that when it struck someone with the wing a puff of poison was sprinkled onto them as it struck. Should be 75. There are some animals and monsters in the monster manual non-advanced that do have Improved Natural Attack as part of thier feats. But, I went ahead and changed it back to the original idea and gave the Moth Alertness instead. I changed the Nightmarish Display into a Fear Spell effect. I knew the Phantasmal Killer would confuse someone since wording the ability with the combination of multiple saves for the spell itself were difficult to put together. I thought of a Sting Attack but I didn't want to confuse anyone else. Besides, I don't want to do a Red Slaad clone with the implanting. I more or less patterned the implant ability after the description of the Spider Eater. |

| R.M.G.C.L.F.07-27-06, 05:39 PM | I'd put down 2wisdom as the initial damage for poison, or maybe shaken for two rounds. The implant ability needs to list methods of removing the eggs. Maybe nightmarish display could be a standard or move action? Also still could do with changing, since Scare doesn't affect characters 7th level or higher. CR looks a little high. I'd go with 7 for male, 8 for female. Intriguing creature. |

Now, I remember what my conscience was nagging me for. I'll be working on the removal of the eggs and such. From what I'm thinking the female uses a ovipositer to put the eggs down the throat of the victim kinda like a facehugger does. Any suggested effects for the Nightmarish Display? I'm also intent of putting that 24 hour immunity with a successful save. |
| Ront Iron-Roar08-03-06, 03:42 PM | Wow, now this is a bummer. I was reading through the Planescape books on Planewalker and apparently there is a creature very similar to this moth I made. |
| lugnut7110-09-06, 11:29 AM | I also came up with a creature somewhat similar fairly recently. When I read over yours for a moment I thought that maybe I stole the idea from you and just forgot about it. Than I slapped my head and remembered that moths plus posion is a pretty common thing so I figured great minds think alike. |
