| NightScreamer2009-08-05, 03:48 AM | I was surprised by the irony, that as I was thinking about it... I went onto the boards to find some question brought up about the Half-Dragon Template. question that me, myself, and even I, were thinking about beforehand. I decided there needs to be something different. A revised version of the template in fact. So I came up with my own. Comments are always welcome, it is FAR from perfection at the moment. Half-Dragon Template Revised "Half-Dragon" is a template that can be applied to any Living Corporeal Creature, this excludes Constructs, Elementals, Oozes, and Undead. Size and Type: Creatures type changes to Dragon. Size is left unchanged. Do not reclaculate Base Attack Bonus, or saves. Hit Dice: All racial Hit Dice increase to d12. Speed: All Half-Dragons may have wings with a Fly speed equal to twice their Land Speed with average maneuverability. However, certain species of Half-Dragon may forgo wings to be born with an additional mode of Movement (see table below). Creatures that already have wings improve their natural Fly speed by +20 ft. If a creature chooses one of the modes of movement below, and already has said movement, increase the speed of that Movement mode by +20 ft. Variety Movement Blue, Brass, 30 ft. Burrow White Black, Green 40 ft. Swim Bronze, Gold Armor Class: Natural Armor improves by +5. Creatures without Natural Armor are treated as having a Natural Armor score of +0 for this purpose. Attack: Most Half-Dragons have both Claws and Bite attacks, using the damages listed below. However creatures without normal appendages to gain one of the attacks (like a Snake does not gain claws, and a Shambling mound cannot gain a Bite attack) may improve the damage of the existing attack by one size. Size Bite Claw F 1 - D 1d2 1 T 1d3 1d2 S 1d4 1d3 M 1d6 1d4 L 1d8 1d6 H 2d6 1d8 G 3d6 2d6 C 4d6 3d6 Special Attacks: A Half-Dragon retains all attacks of the base creature and gains a Breath Weapon usable 3/day. This breath weapons does 1d6 damage per Two Hit Die of the creature (to a maximum of 10d6 @ 20th level), the type of energy damage as well as the type of breath weapon is determined by the Dragon variety (see below). A successful Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 Half-Dragon Hit Die + Con mod) decreases damage by half. This is a Supernatural ability. Variety Damage Size/Shape Black Acid 60 ft. Line Blue Electricity 60 ft. Line Green Acid 30 ft. Cone Red Fire 30 ft. Cone White Cold 30 ft. Cone Brass Fire 60 ft. Line Bronze Electricity 60 ft. Line Copper Acid 60 ft. Line Gold Fire 30 ft. Cone Silver Cold 30 ft. Cone Special Qualities: a half-dragon retains all special qualities of the base creature, plus gaining the following. Darkvision out to 60 ft., low-light vision, and immunity to sleep and paralysis effects. They also gain Energy Resistance 20 corrosponding to Dragon variety. In addition they also gain a single Spell-Like ability based on their heritage. These abilities are cast as a Wizard of level equal to their Hit Dice, with a saving throws of DC 10 + 1/2 HD + Cha mod. Variety Resistance Ability Black Acid Darkness 1/day Blue Electricity Create/Destroy Water 1/day Green Acid Water Breathing 1/day Red Fire Fear 1/day White Cold Fog Cloud 1/day Brass Fire Speak with Animals 1/day Bronze Electricity Create Food and Water 1/day Copper Acid Spider Climb 1/day Gold Fire Alter Self 1/day Silver Cold Gaseous Form 1/day Abilities: Str +6, Con +2, Int +2, Cha +4 Skills: The creature gains a number of skill points as if it were originally a Dragon (6 + Int mod) x (HD + 3). Only include Racial Hit Die in this calculation. Level Adjustment: (Same as Base creature) +4 |
| RavinRay09-08-05, 09:14 AM | Hmm, this is somewhat reminiscent of the dragon bloodlines from Unearthed Arcana, except that your special qualities have more variety. BTW, you have to specify whether they are (Ex), (Su), or (Sp) abilities. |
| NightScreamer2009-08-05, 09:19 AM | I just used the simple fact that spells and spell-like abilities are Italicized. But fine... I was tired of the Whale with 2 claw attacks... That and the fact that I thought it was just plain stupid that not all half-dragons have proper wings... now they do. |
| Morka09-08-05, 09:35 AM | Not sure, but I would increase the LA to +4. A basic humanoid gains two movement mode and a spell-like ability more than the common half-dragon. |
| Ellone09-08-05, 09:39 AM | what about type? if the creature become a dragon, then it should calculate its bab and save as a dragon and not as the base creature. The breath dealing 1dice damage per hd 3/day is alone more than enough for a +3 LA, you should rework this element, some half dragon will do more damage with breath weapon than their draconic ancestor. |
| RavinRay09-08-05, 09:40 AM | I just used the simple fact that spells and spell-like abilities are Italicized. But fine... Silly me, didn't see that. :D Are you referring to the half-dragon animal thread, where I said that the terlen provides a precedent for an half-dragon/half-aquatic animal having elongated pectoral fins as wings? |
| obrysii09-08-05, 12:00 PM | Creatures that already have wings Improve their Maneuverability by one steps (to a max. of Perfect). Why does their manuverability increase? Dragons aren't known to be agile fliers...they should just increase that mode of movement, nothing else. |
| NightScreamer2009-08-05, 01:46 PM | Why does their manuverability increase? Dragons aren't known to be agile fliers...they should just increase that mode of movement, nothing else. Good point, Dragons aren't known to be agile at all, (which is why i changed +2 Dex to +2 Con), So a speed increase? Not sure, but I would increase the LA to +4. A basic humanoid gains two movement mode and a spell-like ability more than the common half-dragon. Was thought about, and changed. what about type? if the creature become a dragon, then it should calculate its bab and save as a dragon and not as the base creature. The breath dealing 1dice damage per hd 3/day is alone more than enough for a +3 LA, you should rework this element, some half dragon will do more damage with breath weapon than their draconic ancestor. The type thing is a WotC thing I cannot explain. The damage for the breath weapon was revamped (to a max of 10d6 @ 20th level). |
