Treasure Half standard Alignment Usually chaotic neutral Advancement By character class Level Adjustment -- A large, bulky humanoid figure appears out of the gloom. Eight feet tall and nearly four feet across, it resembles an enormous, pale-skinned human male with no hair at all. A closer look reveals that its skin is covered with minute scales of palest green, and its small eyes are slit-pupiled and unblinking. It regards you impassively, in eerie silence. Scaled men are strange and enigmatic fey with a connection to snakes. Humanoid in form alone, scaled men stalk silently through the forests, spying on travelers and taking note of the affairs of snakes and snakelike creatures. A scaled man may violently destroy a merchant's caravan for no apparent reason, then let the next one through unmolested. Even other fey have difficulty in predicting a scaled man's actions, and their motivations are utterly obscure. A scaled man stands eight feet high and weighs 800 pounds. All scaled men appear to be physically identical. Scaled men understand Sylven and Common, but almost never speak. Combat: Scaled men fight with battering blows of their fists and occasional spurts of venomous saliva. If expecting trouble a scaled man will travel with an entourage of snakes, including vipers of all sizes. Eerie Stealth (Ex): Despite their Large size, scaled men take no size penalty on Hide checks. Fortification (Ex): A scaled man's inner organs are not arranged in quite the same manner as a humanoid, or even another fey. Thus, the fey gains a +2 bonus to AC for purposes of calculating critical hits and sneak attacks. Poison (Ex): Contact; Fort DC 21; damage blind 1 minute and 1d4 Strength/permanent blindness and 2d4 Strength. The save DC is Constitution-based. Serpentmaster (Ex): Snakes and snakelike creatures treat a scaled man with near-worshipful awe. No snake or serpentlike creature with an Intelligence of 3 or less will willingly attack a scaled man, and more intelligent creatures (such as yuan-ti) must make a DC 18 Will save to attack a scaled man. The save DC is Charisma-based and includes a +2 racial bonus. Serpent's Eye (Su): As a standard action, a scaled man may lock its gaze on a creature within 30' and attempt to hypnotize it. This is not a gaze attack; the subject need meet the scaled man's gaze, and it affects only one subject per round. If the target fails a DC 18 Will save, he will stand and stare at the scaled man for 2d4 rounds (treat as stunned). At the end of this time the subject may act normally, but will have no memory of the intervening time. If the subject takes damage, he may make a new Will save to break free. If he takes damage from the scaled man's attack, the effect automatically ends. Serpent's eye is a mind-affecting enchantment effect. The save DC is Charisma-based. Wild Empathy (Ex): A scaled man has the wild empathy ability as a druid of his racial Hit Dice (+12 bonus). A scaled man has a +6 bonus on all wild empathy checks involving snakes or snakelike creatures. |
| wurwulf10-30-06, 05:09 PM | Hmm... Most of the stats look pretty good, and I think you're right to set this at CR 8. The one thing I noticed was that you gave the creature Ability Focus with an ability that doesn't seem to exist. Did you misprint a name in one or another place or is there supposed to be another ability? |
| Talisman11-06-06, 04:33 PM | Originally had Serpent's Eye named Serpent's Call. Thanks for catching that. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.11-06-06, 05:28 PM | For the serpent's eye, I'd change it to "as dazed" instead of "as stunned." |
| Talisman11-13-06, 01:47 PM | Y'think stunned is too potent? It's pretty much the only magical attack this guy has. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.11-13-06, 05:39 PM | Not too potent, just not appropriate. Stunned is when you go rigid and topple over. Daze is when you gaze slack-jawed and glassy-eyed into the distance. |
