Okay, so normally, medusa can mate with several races, and the result is always a full-blooded female medusa. So a human and a medusa make a medusa. In a d20 book, there's an item that allows a female to impregnate another female. If a female medusa impregnated another female medusa, what would the child be? Would she be just a standard, everyday medusa? Or should she perhaps have the Monster of Legend (MMII) template added to her? Personally, I think the combination of two full-blooded medusa would result in a more powerful medusa, thus becoming a monster of legend. I'm thinking of adding a covey of medusa in my game that would selectively mate with non-related medusa over the period of several years with the intend of having two medusas of legend mating to produce an even stronger medusa. What do other people think? Is adding the Monster of Legend template seem like a good way to respond to this situation? Negeta |

There was mention in 2.0 of a Maedar, but they don't seem to exist in 3.5, which I'm actually happy about. I like the idea of medusa being a female only race. Now, if there DNA was potent enough to make the mix of human and medusa blood to be a complete medusa, I thought that the combination of the potent medusa and medusa blood would create a stonger medusa. I also thought it would be interesting for there to be a covey of medusa trying to breed strength into their race by only mating female medusa with female medusa to create more of the strengthened medusa. Maybe I'm the only one thinking that way. Negeta |

The d20 fantasy world is not based on the same conceptions as modern science. If you get rid of the DNA referrence, though, you do make a good point. You should feel free to make this the case if you so choose. Another option might be the Paragon template from the ridiculous level handbook. Perhaps that is what happens when the two medusae of legend crossbreed. |
| Negeta08-17-04, 09:49 PM | Paragon template? I haven't seen that one before. I'll have to check it out, for curiosities sake. And as to the reference to science, it's hard not to think about it. It's all that horrid schooling that's got that kind of thinking into me. Magic should be allowed to just be magic. Negeta |
| Negeta08-17-04, 11:57 PM | Alright, so I’ve looked over the Monster of Legend template, and decided to use it as a base for making a medusa that’s the daughter of two other female medusae. The major deviation would be the fact that the daughter wouldn’t be created through divine intervention. She’s the creation of love (insert aww’s). Creature type: Monstrous Humanoid. The born medusa wouldn’t actually be an outsider, since she isn’t the product of divine intervention. Damage: The daughter doesn’t have a natural weapon explained in the template, since adding “snakes” as a damage type would really only affect medusae or perhaps yuan-ti halfbloods with snake hands. I suppose the damage would remain at 1d4. Special Attacks: Most of the available choices, except for perhaps the frightful presence and poison, would be the direct result of divine intervention. There’s no reason for her to have another poison attack tacked onto her bite, which isn’t even considered a normal attack for her. Thus, the only choice that seems possible would be frightful presence. However, I think it would be better to instead give up the one choice for a special attack for another choice from special qualities. Special Qualities: I think that Enhanced Attributes would be a necessity, which adds +4 to the DC of her gaze and poison, would work well to reflect her enhanced bloodline. I think Greater Damage to increase her natural snake attack to 1d6 might also reflect this well. If the damage would be increased from the damage in the first place, this might not be necessary. I think 1d8 is a little too much for her snake hair. And as a third choice to replace the special attack, I think either immunities to poison and mind-affecting would fit, or perhaps fast healing 5. I thought these would work since they are all extraordinary abilities, and thus not created by any extra magic. Abilities: As with a PC, I'd roll up all of her stats before adding the medusa racial adjustments followed by the monster of legend boost to stats. Skills: I’d just make sure to buy skills after adding the +2 to Int, since she’d be born this way instead of receiving the boost later in life. For every other change, I’d follow the Monster of Legend template. So really, it wouldn’t be the exact monster of legend template because of the lack of divine intervention. But I thought the template might well suit the boost in abilities for the rare occurrence of this mating. If anyone would like to add suggest and/or comments, please feel free to let me know. Also, if anyone knows if the damage for the snakes would be 1d6 before the greater damage special quality, that’d help me a bit. Thanks. Negeta |
