Has this been done somewhere before? I think that aasimar and tiefling make much more sense as templates, to better reconcile them with the half-celestial and half-fiend templates. Never made much sense to me. What about chaonds, zenythri, and genasi?

Did you, uh, actually read what I was asking about? I was asking about templates. The article in savage progressions deals with playing level adjusted races from level one, and gives monster classes for them (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a).

My point is, doesn't it strike anyone else as odd that basically anything can be half-celestial, but only human half-celestials produce celestial-blooded offspring? Same goes for half-fiends and tieflings. Then they give us the wispling, fey'ri, maeluth et al.

Wouldn't it be easier, and - in my opinion - a lot more logical to just make 'aasimar' and 'tiefling' templates? Do ones for chaonds, zenythri, and genasi, too, and you can have a dwarf earth genasi, a halfling chaond, and any other combination you wish.

It seems better than giving us: Aasimar (Monster Manual 3.5, page 209), tiefling (Monster Manual 3.5, page 209), maeluth (Fiend Folio, page 136), mechanatrix (Fiend Folio, page 137), shyft (Fiend Folio, page 138), wispling (Fiend Folio, page 139), chaond (Monster Manual II, page 170), zenythri (Monster Manual II, page 170), genasi – earth, air, fire, and water (Monsters of Faerūn, page 71), fey’ri (Monsters of Faerūn, page 72), and tanarukk (Monsters of Faerūn, page 72).

I did this in my own campaign ages ago. Before I learned about genasi (I don't buy campaign-specific books), and it shows.

Planetouched: This term refers to creatures descended from outsiders or elementals, at least two generations back. The most common are aasimars and tieflings (humanoids with celestial or fiendish ancestry, respectively), but others exist: chaonds (from chaotic outsiders), zenythris (from lawful outsiders), sorropians (from true neutral outsiders), ydorrans, ventans, pyrals, braxos (from the elemental planes), and skiaps (from the plane of shadow). Level adjustment is +1.

Planetouched creatures have a slight look of their plane of origin about them. Aasimars tend to be tall, good-looking and pleasant, sometimes with metallic hair or eyes. Tieflings are accompanied with a slight aura of “wrongness,” and sometimes have tiny horns, pointed canines, red eyes, cloven feet, or a smell of brimstone. Chaonds tend to have blocky, squat forms; patchy, untamable hair, and noticeable physical asymmetries, with occasional greater deformities such as extra (or missing) fingers or toes, blotchy birthmarks, or mismatched eye color. Zenythris are usually exactly average for their base species, ethnicity, and/or subrace, with perfectly straight hair and unusually symmetrical features. Sorropians are frequently born twins of opposite natures, and tend not to have features that are characteristic of their ethnicity or subrace. Ydorrans usually have blue or green eyes, and often have lower-than-average body temperature, occasionally with webbed fingers or toes. Ventans are usually very thin, with hair that won’t lie flat and a soft voice. Pyrals often have red hair and sometimes black or red eyes, often with a high body temperature and sharply pointed ears or fingers. Braxos are usually short and muscular, with dark skin and dirty-colored hair and small, hard eyes, occasionally with crystalline finger- or toenails. Skiaps have dark or dusky skin, hair, and eyes, and tend to be thin and quiet.

Each type of planetouched has certain special abilities: one spell-like ability per day (cast at their character level), some energy resistance, some stat modifiers (cumulative with their base race), and a +2 racial bonus to two skill checks. The following table summarizes these abilities.

This is kinda off topic, but I applaud you for taking away the Tiefling's Cha penalty.
