| BlackDragon7142502-21-08, 12:35 AM | So I'm putting my players up against an aerial aboleth, an aboleth variant from Lords of Madness. Since these things don't live in water, they don't have the special slime attack or the mucus cloud abilities. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of abilities I could replace them with, along with their effects and save DC's? I was thinking along the lines of a cloud of nausiating fumes instead of a mucus cloud, but that's all I have so far. Any ideas are welcome! |
| Shrakta02-21-08, 12:38 AM | Well there's not much I can think of that'll replace a cloud of snot. Acid, maybe? |
| Space_Dragon02-22-08, 02:17 AM | I agree that there were a lot of oversights in regards to that varient. I recommend the following changes: -Creatures mutated by its slimy touch gain a fly speed, but lose any other movement rates. -Replace mucus cloud with vapor cloud. Those who breath it become UNABLE TO FLY for 1d4 rounds, and begin plunging downward. |

| justicar34702-24-08, 02:52 PM | Well, I would say keep the slimey touch. Just because it isn't in the water doesn't mean it ain't slimy. Instead of the slime making it so creatures need to be in water, have it transfomr them so that they start to take on an amorphous form, kinda like the Chaos Beast's touch. I wouldn't make it quite as bad as the Chaos Beast, but the affected creature could take big pealties to attacks (trouble holding weapons), AC (armor doesn't fit), speed (legs don't move right), and casting spells (can't make the right gestures or say the words because their mouth is mishapen). A -2 to attacks and AC, half speed, and 15% spell failure would work. Use the standard Slime saved DC. For the Mucus Cloud, I'd recomend replacing it with a gassious cloud. The Sticking Cloud spell is one option. Another would be a gass that sucks away the air creatures need to breath. In this case, any creature inside the cloud (probably a 5ft cloud around the aboleth) would have to hold their breath or start drowning. I think you may want to change up its feats so that it can use its bite more. An arial aboleth just strikes me as more physical. Take a look at the aboleth feats in LoM. You may want to look at the psionic aboleth alternative in the back of the EPH. Because the aboleth is in the sky, you could also throw in some wheather related abilities such as control weather, gust of wind, and wind wall. A lightning blast and electricity immunity would go with this theme. For some more power, you could give it levels in Psion. Focus it on telepathy and weather powers. You could also do something with cloud shaping. It could have a mobile layer made out of hardened clouds. It could use its abilities like mirage arcana to discise its layer (if you arn't going for the psionic variation). It could even discuise itself as an airship with its powers. I rather like Talisman's idea of winged scum. Throw in some aboleth graffs as well. Something to keep in mind is that aboleths are smart opponents. It probably has a reason for the attack. It isn't going to just stand around and get pumbled either. It will want to mess with its enemies heads. Imagine it using its illusion powers to make it look like it set the deck of their ship on fire so that they are all seperated and it can fight them one on one. |
