Lycanthrope King

I am going to be running a campaign with lycanthropes in it, and one thing that is not clear to me is if a person takes the belladona/Wolfsbane, how long the ability points are gone?

Also, from what I might have read, characters that are inflicted with lycanthropy gain some looks of their creatures, like a person who is a wererat is shifty and thin, while a weretiger would be stronger and have more fangish/sharp teeth while in human form. Is this true?

I think it's natral born Lycanthropes that have the animale apperances. However the natral ones or more powerfull because they can control when they shape change.

Well the afflicted lycanthropes can change as well, assuming they know they are a lycanthrope, but they would have an alignment change I think... But what I am meaning is one day your a strong human fighter, cocky and such, but get bitten by a wererat, does the fighter suddenly become shifty and look thinner?

No, only natural lycanthropes look similar to their animal forms. A human barbarian that is cut like chiseled granite isn't going to become wiry and shifty-eyed if he's bitten by a wererat and contracts lycanthropy.

However, a natural wererat, in human form, is most likely going to look "rattish." But not all of them will look the same. You could very well have an obese wererat or a deceptively thin weretiger.

I don't think it would be that sudden. If I rember correctly thoguh your appearnce changes greadally over many years.

k, that answers some questions, because my NPC ranger that I am making, his parents tried to overthrow a temple and convert it to some evil god, but they failed and the god with the permission of Selune (good/nuetral lycanthropes in portfolio) their child had a curse placed on him, that he could be inflicted by more than 1 kind of lycanthropy, and by various other creatures that are usually not lycanthropic. (mainly because the parents greatest fear and hate was lycanthropy) So that's why I wanted to know if they gained the appearance, because if that would happen, he would be very very ugly and disturbing. (which would be countered by a permanent illusion...)

Now, to the first question, how long does a person take to recieve back the ability points lost temporarily? (due to belladona or other things)

Read the healing section in the combat chapter of the PHB. It discusses temporary ability damage.

You may also wish to look into Sean Reynold's Lycanthrope Template class idea in Savage Progressions (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20030912a). This will allow your ranger to gradually acquire lycanthropy without having his ECL suddenly leap passed the rest of the party.

Pay attention to the way Sean has split the wererat template into a Wererat Template Class and a Dire Rat (Lycanthrope) Class. The first grants the abilities associated with lycanthropy itself, while the second represents the development of the animal nature (and aquisition of the animal HD etc).

Since you wish your ranger to acquire several types of lycanthropy, it might be an idea to have him take 2 levels in a single, generic lycanthropy template class then take levels in various animal classes. It will probably be best to use animals with only 1 or 2 hd. As he acquires levels in each of the animal classes, his base form might gradually assume superfical animal traits.

PS: look towards the end of this thread here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=98018) where I tried my hand at creating a few were* classes.

about your feats, are they gained automatically when lycanthropy is contacted, or are they gained when in hybrid/animal form?

A lycanthrope's animal feats are accesible to all forms and, conversely, the feats earned by the base character are available in animal and hybrid form as well.

Of course, if you don't meet a prerequisites in a certain form you will not be able to use the feat. However, you do not need to keep seperate lists, just take note of when they work and when they don't.

A weretiger's Improved Natural Attack, for instance, will do nothing for you in human form unless you have a natural attack to improve. However, the feat is applied to the hybrid form's natural attacks.

On the other hand, a wererat's weapon finesse will apply to any finessable weapon (in 3.5) not just bite and claw ~ but without the +6 ability boost to dexterity this may not be as important.

temporary ability damage heals at a rate of 1 point per day in all ability scores. 2 points per day if under medical supervision(the heal skill)
