I just wanna know why in the MM(3.5) do they tell you what ability the save is based on vs. a special attack. For ex., the medusa's gaze attack is charisma based. But why would we need to know that?

Last night our DM had us fighting one (all 2nd level characters) & he had us all roll & add our charisma bonuses. Not our fortitude saves.
He was wrong, wasn't he?

If someone were to cast Eagle's Splendor on the Medusa, her gaze becomes harder to save against. Likewise, if someone hits her with a charisma damaging poison, her gaze becomes easier to save against.

Things like this are good to know for players and DMs who want to make gaze either nastier or not as nasty (depending on who's side of the DM's screen they are on

Like they said: When a save is "Charisma-based" or whatever, as is the case with medusae, it's the DC that is affected by the medusa's charisma, not the save roll modified by the PC's.

It also comes in handy for advancing and templating monsters. For example, if a creature had its poison save DC constitution based, and had a Con of 18 and 4HD, the DC would be 16, but if advanced to 8HD with a 22 Con, the DC would be 20.

Pretty much all special attack saves are DC 10 + 1/2 Monster's HD + ability modifier.
