| syndrome10-16-05, 03:08 PM | I think that there's a flaw in the Aboleth entry that says the Swim modifier for this creature is +8. I traced some other aquatic creatures to see whether the normal Strength modifier applies to the Natural Swimmer Bonus (+8), and so far, Kraken's and Shark's Swim modifiers are developed by addition. This means that Aboleth's Swim Skill should be +16 (+8 Strength mod, +8 for having Swim speed). This one's not in the manual errata -- I've just checked. Anyone? |
| Colmarr10-17-05, 03:21 AM | I agree with your logic. It looks like their Swim check modifier should be +16. |
| primemover00310-17-05, 07:24 AM | Every creature with a natural Swim speed automatically gets a +8 to their Swim checks (when they need to make them that is). It's not normally reflected in their Skill scores though. |
| Weenie10-17-05, 08:37 AM | It's not normally reflected in their Skill scores though. It usually is reflected in their Skill scores. See merfolk, triton, sharks, water naga, etc.... But some miss the modifier - aboleth, sahuagin, probably others. Go figure. |

Go figure. My point exactly! Is there a pattern? And what's the purpose of the missing Strength modifier? I am still unable to find an entry that clearly states that a Swim speed racial bonus excludes the Swim check Str mod from the calculation... On the other hand, it seems irrational to me that Aboleth, a huge aquatic(!) and hydrodynamic(!!) creature that lurks in those deep waters for so long, is a moderate swimmer. Just look at the Kraken stats for instance. There must be an explanation... |
