I have a theory on the argument of Vampires and negative hit points. Most undead are DESTROYED at 0 hit points, not DEAD. The diff. is that DESTRUCTION means to damage an nonliving being or object, something that does not have internal organs, to the point where it is either dust(Anniliated) or destroy a substantial portion of it (70% and up). DEATH means that something has taken damage to the point where its VITAL organs can no longer function therefore killing it WITHOUT needing to do the damage described I have described in DESTRUCTION. A living thing can die without being completely destroyed or losing 70% or more of its body because it need organs to live, so the hit points of a living thing would be more like endurance as in how many hits its body can take before the brain, lungs, heart, and so on, also damaging areas or large amounts of things vital to these beings organs ex: throat, jugular veign, massive blood loss, being unable to take in air and so on would be considered what would have to be possible to hit (Neck) or cause (massive blood loss) to score a crit. becuse youre damaging much more important areas than random areas of skin. Living things can be destroyed but that would requre the attacker to do much more than required to take the foe down, you dont have to cleave your opponent in half to kill them. With most undead (ones that Qualify for crit immunity and are not affected by loss of head, heart and so on) hit points represent the body mass, because they dont need organs they would not go unconsious from damage substantial to bring it to negative hit points so it doesnt have them, because negative hit points represent the DYING stage (when the heart, lungs and brain start failing, brain is the most important because brain loss would instantly kill any live brain having creature, thats why vorpral weapons get instant kill)
and if a man losses his head he drops right then and there, but if you do that to an zombie it just keeps on going, it wasnt using that anyway. Hit points represent that 70% and up of the body for undead. Hit points represent the amount of times you can get hit with a sword untill the blood loss becomes fatal for living things. To get to the point, Im pretty shure that an undead is only a vampire if it has a brain, with liches its not a brain, its a soul, and naturally occuring undead like nightwalkers dont have brains, theyr magicly sentient, but vampires retain the brain, but that gives them the weakness of the brain for the living, loss of the brain is fatal(but if the brain thing is true then they can be raised back by somehow reattatching the head to the body), so they just drop dead, putting HOLY wafers in its mouth makes the head and body work like magnets, the head and body are both the positive side and therefore repell fom one another (the body of a vampire can be replaced with another VAMPIRE body and attached to the head but the body retains the repelling from holy stuff). The Vampire lord is another story but its another story for another time. Bottom line: Headloss is fatal to the vampire, or at least untill the head is reattached to any VAMPIRE body (must be a headless body)

Also, the vampire is destroyed by the steak to the heart because it supplys ejust enough blood to run the head.
