| McClaren01-19-07, 03:51 PM | I am trying to account for all the mind flayer skills in the MM entry on page 187. The illithid should start with 66 skill points (2+Int Mod)x(HD+3) or (2+4)x(8+3)=66. Bluff (C) - 8 ranks (8 points) + 3 Cha = 11 Concentration (C) - 10 ranks (10 points) + 1 Con = 11 Diplomacy (cc) - 2 ranks (4 points) + 3 Cha + 2 Bluff synergy = 7 Disguise (cc) - 0 ranks (0 points) + 3 Cha = 3 (+2 Bluff synergy when acting = 5) Hide (C) - 8 ranks (8 points) + 2 Dex = 10 Intimidate (C) - 4 ranks (4 points) + 3 Cha + 2 Bluff synergy = 9 Knowledge (any) (C) - 8 ranks (8 points) + 4 Int = 12 Listen (C) - 8 ranks (8 points) + 3 Wis = 11 Move Silently (C) - 8 ranks (8 points) + 2 Dex = 10 Sense Motive (cc) - 4 ranks (8 points) + 3 Wis = 7 Spot (C) - 8 ranks (8 points) + 3 Wis = 11 For a grand total of 74 skill points. So how do I reconcile the extra 8 skill points? I couldn't find anything in the errata. Any ideas? |

| dok01-19-07, 06:47 PM | Per the SRD, in a monster entry all listed skills are class skills. Which means it didn't spend 4 points on Diplomacy and 8 points on Sense Motive. It spent 2 points & 4 points. So the breakdown is as follows: Bluff - 8 points Concentration - 10 points, running total of 18 points Diplomacy - 2 points, r.t. 20 points Disguise - 0 points, r.t. 20 points Hide - 8 points, r.t. 28 points Intimidate - 4 points, r.t. 32 points Knowledge (any) - 8 points, r.t. 40 points Listen - 8 points, r.t. 48 points. Move Silently - 8 points, r.t. 56 points Sense Motive - 4 points, r.t. 60 points Spot - 8 points, r.t. 68 points So it's actually only off by two points. |

I originally took this to mean "if stats were given to play monsters as characters" but upon re-reading you are probably right, Diplomacy and Sense Motive would be considered class skills unless you make a PC character out of one. So now how do account for the last 2 points? Is there a synergy we're missing? |
| SilentOne01-20-07, 10:49 AM | Apparently, the knowledge (any) is actually knowledge (nobility and royalty) [god knows why], which would grant a +2 synergy bonus to the Diplomacy check and save 2 skill points. Yeah, that's all I can think of. |
