Has anyone stumbled upon some decent guidelines for the above? I've already made up my mind a particular creature I'm designing should have spell-like abilities rather than effective levels in a caster class but I'm a little stumped on the following: how many should be useable once per day; how many should be available at will; if the CR adjustment is based on the highest level spell-like ability or if quantity is more important than quality; etc.

For instance, let's say this CR15 creature has a few spell-like abilities available once a day, a few more available three times per day and a smattering of at-will powers. Let's also say, for the sake of argument, this is its primary attack form: the creature is immobile and has no physical attacks.

What's the most powerful spell I can get away with simulating? Is there a tried-and-true method for determining an appropriate caster level? This has been the single most daunting aspect of monster creation for me... I can adjudicate "the crunchy stuff" but spell-like abilities mystify me.

immobile... hmm.. interesting, ok.. CR 15, it had better be tough, since even a blind chipmunk can hit it it may not live love.

If it has 15 HD, it could have 15 levels as a spellcaster.. A spell-like ability it could have is unlimited disintigrates, cloudkills, or wails of the banshee.. :D Beholders are CR 13 and has 7 eyestalks that are unlimited.. including the deadly disintigrate.. :D
