| dok12-10-05, 02:16 PM | Creatures that advance by hit dice (rather than by character class) work in one of three ways: 1.) Most advanced creatures represent bigger, stronger, more exotic versions of the base creature. For example, a Dire Tiger that is advanced by Hit Dice was always that big; it represents a creature born bigger/stronger/faster/larger. 2.) Some creatures become more powerful over time, specifically certain Outsiders. Devils, for example, gain Hit Dice and become stronger & more powerful over the course of centuries and millenia, until they are "promoted" to a new form of Devil. 3.) A very, very, very small number of creatures can gain racial HD through other means like eating the remains of enemies. But unless the monster explicitly says they gain HD in this way (like the Barghest (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/barghest.htm)) then most creatures cannot gain racial HD over the course of time. Recap: Dragons & some outsiders get more HD as they get older. Most monsters with more HD are bigger, stronger versions. Born/made that way from the start. Unless a monster's description says they can gain racial HD, they can't. |
