So, here's a fun little game: Take an out-of-the-book monster (with the elite stat array and rearranged feats and skills as necessary) and see how much more effective one level in a PC class makes it. It need to qualify for the class.

A Gold Dragon Monk1 at any age is nasty. They get the boost to touch AC, and the larger ones can perform a full attack that includes five high-power unarmed strikes. Likewise, one level in Psychic Warrior means that anything big can manifest Expansion, and is now twice as big.

Giving Sahuagin mutants a rogue level is just plain mean: You get a feat (which can be spent on improved initative), and if you're underwater and win initative, then your massive full attack of doom will make them cry.

However, for true unadulterated evil, you need to hand a roper a Soul Eater level.

Any other exceptionally nasty one-level monsters?

Just a guesstimation here, but I'll pull out my books later and check this:

Minotaur Scout lvl 1. Skirmish and minotaurs make a naturally deadly combo, with all the charging minotaurs do. With Power Attack, Improved Bull Rush, Awesome Blow, and Improved Initiative, the minotaur scout is a tough customer.

Add in the Scout's selection of skills, and the Minotaur Scout is just amazing at what minotaurs are meant to do. Track, find, and destroy things quickly.

What about a Xill monk? That's 9 attacks on a full attack (2 on flurry of blows, 3 for the 3 additional hands (Multiweapon fighting*), and 4 claws attacks(Multiattack)). Either Improved Grapple or Stunning Fist are useful.

*I never saw officially that Multiweapon Fighting gave additional attack for each additional hand for a monk. But it's official that Two-Weapon fighting give an additional attack for a monk. And since Multiweapon Fighting is the equivalent of Two-Weapon Fighting, I assume it's the same.

I like to give ogres level in both barbarian and rogue. I think it suits them.

Also, as a special one-time thing, I threw an ogre monk against my players. Had terrible AC, but it hit pretty hard, and moved pretty fast.

I was thinking about a Mind Flayer Reaping Mauler. Kind of unnecessary, but still cool, especially if the illithid wants to take brains without damaging them. Then I started thinking, "What if he snaps the necks of his victims, leaving the brain unharmed for later preservation, so that he can turn them into weird 'mind flayer style' potions."

Just an interesting idea, not exactly a power-play.

I'd have to agree with a Great Gold Wyrm Monk1

Stick a level of cleric onto a wight or a wraith and it can bolster its own spawn.

Paladin also works with dragons. Rogue, especially with white ones.

with a mated pair of Flinds. Ranger8 and Ranger6/Cleric3. The Flinds lost but they did a LOT of damage :smirk:
