| TheScapegoat08-30-06, 05:07 PM | Adult Wood Thrasher Large Animal Hit Dice: 8d8+35 (71hp) Initiative: +1 Speed: 40 ft. (8 squares) Armor Class: 18 (-1 size, +1 dex, +8 natural) Touch 10, flat-footed 18 Base Attack / Grapple: +13/+17 Attack: Bite +12 melee (2d8+5) Full Attack: Bite +12 melee (2d8+7); 2 Slams +12 melee (2d6+7) Space/Reach: 10ft./5ft. Special Attacks: Improved Grab, Rend 2d8+10, Trample, Thunderous Trample, Thrash Wood Special Qualities: Damage reduction 5/magic, low light vision, scent Saves: Fort +10, Ref +7, Will +4 Abilities: Str 25, Dex 13, Con 18, Int 2 Wis 14, Cha 6 Skills: Listen +6, Spot +9 Feats: Power Attack, Toughness, Run Environment: Any temperate forest Organization: Solitary or pair, often accompanied by 1-3 young Wood Thrashers Challenge Rating: 8 Treasure: None Alignment: Neutral Advancement: 9-16 (Large); 17+ (Huge) Level Adjustment: -- A Wood Thrasher is a large 6 legged creature that stands roughly 10 feet tall are 16 feet long and weight roughly 7,000 pounds. A Wood Thrasher looks similar to an elephant expet being slightly wider, trunk less, and having a scaly greenish hide. The head of a Wood Thrasher is large and wide and sits on a long 4 foot neck with eyes set far back and the nose at the front just above the maw. A Wood Thrasher's wide mouth is lined with large flat teeth, good for ripping bark from a tree. The Wood Thrasher uses its large body to knock over trees within its territory to create a protective den for their young. Entering the territory of a Wood Thrasher can be easily recognized by anyone who knows the beasts on account of the excess of uprooted trees whose bark seems oddly shorn off in many places. A Wood Thrasher is an omnivore but especially love to eat the bark from trees. Wood Thrashers live deep within heavily wooded forests. Combat A Wood Thrasher fights mainly to eat but will also in order to protect its territory. Wood Thrashers general will attempt to trample large groups of opponents and grab a target and carry it off. It will then do it’s rend attack and toss the offender aside to return to fight whoever else was with the victim. A Wood Thrasher’s hide gives it a high natural armor and damage reduction. To defend itself, a Wood Thrasher will often use its body to knock trees over onto enemies. A Wood Thrasher can make 2 slam attacks or 1 bite attack as a full round action. It may also be able to make 1 slam attack with a hind leg to an opponent who threatens its rear; this attack may be done once per round against 1 opponent as a secondary attack (-5). Improved Grab (ex): When a Wood Thrasher hits with its bite attack it can attempt to start a grapple without provoking an attack of opportunity. Rend (ex): As a free action a Wood Thrasher that was grappling an opponent in its mouth at the start of the round can do it’s rend attack dealing 2d8+7 damage. It can then act as normal but will continue to grapple unless it decides to release or loses a grapple check. Trample (ex): As a full turn action a Wood Thrasher can run over any number of opponents at least one size category smaller than itself. The opponents must be in a direct path that the Wood Thrasher runs and must be within his base movement of 40 feet. The trample deals 3d6+10 points of bludgeoning damage. Trampled opponents can either attempt attacks of opportunity at a -4 penalty or Reflex saves (DC 21) for half damage. The DC is Strength-based. Thunderous Trample (ex): While trampling a Wood Thrasher can make its bite attack against one opponent as asecondary attack (-5). Thrash Wood (ex): As a full round action a Wood Thrasher can use its body to knock down a tree near it onto opponents. This attack can hit up to 2 targets that must be within 10 feet of one another (1 square separating them) or 3 targets that are in adjacent squares. This attack deals 3d6+10 damage with a reflex save for half (DC 21). On a failed save the victim is knocked prone for 1 round. The DC is Strength-based. | Talisman08-30-06, 06:34 PM | Hit Dice: 8d8+39 (71hp) 8d8 = 36 hp 18 (+4) Con x 8 HD = 32 hp + 3 for Toughness = total 35 hp Your final total (71 hp) is right, but the bonus should be 35, not 39. Base Attack / Grapple: +15/+19 Animal BAB is equal to 3/4 HD, or +6 for an 8 HD critter. Grapple bonus is 6 (BAB) +7 (Str) +4 (Large size), total +17 Attack: Bite +15 melee (2d8+5) Full Attack: Bite +15 melee (2d8+7); 2 Slams +15/+10 melee (2d6+7) Primary attack bonus is +12 (+6 BAB, +7 Str, -1 size) Natural weapons do not get iterative attacks; therefore, the slam attacks should be at +12 (if primary weapons), or +7 (if secondary weapons), both at the same bonus. Space/Reach: 5ft. x 10ft. /5 ft. This is 3.0 facing; in 3.5, it should be 10'/5'. All monsters are square in 3.5. Special Qualities: Damage reduction 5/--, low light vision I have a problem with an animal having DR at all, let alone DR bypassed by nothing. I suggest upping the natural armor bonus instead; either that or change this guy to a magical beast. Also, I think he should have scent. Skills: Listen +4, Spot +7 8 HD animal with 2 Int has 11 skill points. You have 4 left over, counting the Wisdom mod as being factored in already. Challenge Rating: 8 A Wood Thrasher looks like a large elephant with a thick greenish hide over their body in which they use to knock over trees within its territory to create a nest for their young. What?? They use their thick, greenish hide to knock over trees? I think you mean they use their body to knock over trees; this is a bit confusing. A Wood Thrasher's wide mouth is lined with sharp pointed teeth, good for ripping bark from a tree. Useless Trivia Alert: Pointed teeth are actually lousy for ripping the bark off trees. Large, flat teeth are what you want (check out the beaver). A Wood Thrasher has a thick chitinous hide that gives it a high natural armor and damage reduction. Chitinous? So it's like a big, hairy elephant...bug? I don't really like that image. When attacking normal a Wood Thrasher can make 2 slam attacks or 1 bite attack. It may also be able to make 1 slam attack with a hind leg to an opponent who threatens its rear; this attack may be done once per round against 1 opponent as a secondary attack (-5). A bit confusing. It sounds as if the WT gets either one bite attack or two slams as a full-attack action. If it slams, it can also make a slam with one hind leg as a secondary attack? Meaning it balances on one leg? Too complicated. Talisman say bad. Improved Grab (ex): When a Wood Thrasher hits with both of its claw attacks it can attempt to start a grapple without provoking an attack of opportunity. Claw attacks? Do you mean slam attacks? I was picturing big, elephantine feet, not the sort that can grab. Run by attack (ex): While trampling a Wood Thrasher can make attacks with both his claws against one opponent as secondary attacks (-5). Looks fine, but I recommend changing the name. It'[s too close to "Ride-by Attack." Maybe "Thundering Trample?" Thrash Wood (ex): As a full round action a Wood Thrasher can use its body to knock down a tree near it onto opponents. This attack can hit up to 2 targets that must be within 5 feet of one another or 3 targets that are in adjacent squares. This attack deals 3d6+10 damage with a reflex save for half (DC 17). On a failed save the victim is knocked prone for 1 round. The DC is Strength-based. This is kind of cool. My only objection is that creatures within 5' of each other are, by definition, adjacent (unless you meant within 10', that is, with only one square separating them). All in all, an interesting and unusual creature. I'm always glad to see new animals that actually make sense as animals. Cool. |
| TheScapegoat08-30-06, 09:55 PM | Alot of your problems that you noticed steam from the fact that i changed it from a Magical Beast to an Animal after deciding that it didn't do a single magical thing, so first thanks for pointing out what i forgot to change :D . Special Qualities: Damage reduction 5/--, low light vision I have a problem with an animal having DR at all, let alone DR bypassed by nothing. I suggest upping the natural armor bonus instead; either that or change this guy to a magical beast. The basic premise of this creature was that of a huge beast with really thick armor. I felt that anything that could bypass this wouldn't make sense. Unless im wrong about say a +1 weapon but i always thought that creatures DR was based on something magical, which is why a +1 sword could bypass it. I didn't feel this would explain why a +1 sword could more easily hack at this animal. However i didn't want to make it impossible to hurt this thing which is why i made it only DR 5. If i am incorrect on this i may just increase its armor and remove the DR. The thing is i didn't want this thing impossible to hit and then take alot of damage, i wanted it to be hit but take less damage. Also, I think he should have scent. I also considered this, maybe i will add it. Skills: Listen +4, Spot +7 8 HD animal with 2 Int has 11 skill points. You have 4 left over, counting the Wisdom mod as being factored in already. I did not add in the mods i was under the impression on monsters skills you just put in where the spent points as mods would be assumed. I will fix this. A Wood Thrasher looks like a large elephant with a thick greenish hide over their body in which they use to knock over trees within its territory to create a nest for their young. What?? They use their thick, greenish hide to knock over trees? I think you mean they use their body to knock over trees; this is a bit confusing. Bad explaining on my part, i just ment to emphasize that the reason it could do what it does is because of its thick hide. Not that its their hide and not their body doing the work heh, i will re-word. A Wood Thrasher's wide mouth is lined with sharp pointed teeth, good for ripping bark from a tree. Useless Trivia Alert: Pointed teeth are actually lousy for ripping the bark off trees. Large, flat teeth are what you want (check out the beaver). Good to know, will change :D . Not useless if it helps imo heh. A Wood Thrasher has a thick chitinous hide that gives it a high natural armor and damage reduction. Chitinous? So it's like a big, hairy elephant...bug? I don't really like that image. DEFINITION: Chitin- a nitrogen-containing polysaccharide, related chemically to cellulose, that forms a semitransparent horny substance and is a principal constituent of the exoskeleton, or outer covering, of insects, crustaceans, and arachnids. So basicaly yes, just less hairy. The creature is ment to be similar to an elephant or possibly even dinosaur but with a really thick hide that is almost like an exoskeleton. Originaly the thing had 4 legs and 2 "arms" and it made claw attacks with the "arms". I changed it deciding to drop the arms as i felt it just made no sense. (Which is why i had the missprint of claws below heh. I am considering giving the creature 6 legs and possibly increasing its movment. This oddity of 3 legs attacking and the creature balancing on 1 leg INCREASES my feeling to add 2 legs. Improved Grab (ex): When a Wood Thrasher hits with both of its claw attacks it can attempt to start a grapple without provoking an attack of opportunity. Claw attacks? Do you mean slam attacks? I was picturing big, elephantine feet, not the sort that can grab. Actually ment ot change to its bite attack, but i forgot to chang claw attakcs to bite as stated above for reason. Run by attack (ex): While trampling a Wood Thrasher can make attacks with both his claws against one opponent as secondary attacks (-5). Looks fine, but I recommend changing the name. It'[s too close to "Ride-by Attack." Maybe "Thundering Trample?" Not bad idea, it was taken from ride-by attack, which i almost just gave it that feat but that felt a cop out and made no sense. Thrash Wood (ex): As a full round action a Wood Thrasher can use its body to knock down a tree near it onto opponents. Yeah thats what i ment 1 square seperating them, bad explaing again by me, DOH! All in all, an interesting and unusual creature. I'm always glad to see new animals that actually make sense as animals. Cool. Thanks for that and the help. I knew i was bound to screw up alot, my friends and I play mostly by what makes sense and not by the RAW at times so as i more and more start to design by the RAW i realize i screw up alot of things that i don't fully understand yet. |
| TheScapegoat08-30-06, 10:30 PM | Changes suggested by Talisman made and all errors corrected, i hope! Changed the creature to six legs so that its attacks made sense. Added scent. Inreased its size a little, but not size category. Changed DR to be stopped by magic. |
