My campaign is based on a lot of mystic ideas, more centered around anicient feys as the "powers that be" instead of outsiders, who only rarely interact with the material plane.
In Human mythology, the material plane is the point where the six inner planes touch and so they have a much stronger connection to the world, than the outer planes do, which are completely severed from the inner core of planes.
In this world, elementals are incorporeal spirits, who can take controll of elemental matter to shape a body for them, if they so desire. When they don't do, they can float or glide freely inside their element and switch between material plane and elemental plane at will. They can't be killed by mundane means but slicing through their body forces them to spend additional energy to hold their body together and can weaken them enough, that they lose their hold of the elemental matter and return to their incorporeal form again.
The MM Elementals are the lesser kinds of these elemental spirits, but I want to have much more powerfull spirits, that can create much more elaborate bodies litararily out of thin air. Remember the Elementals in Riddick? In an interview, Vin Diesel said they are the D&D-Creatures transfered into sci-fi. I like the idea very much, but unfortunately don't really have an idea where to start.

In D&D, there are the Genies, but I don't really like them, because they just have this arabic style you can't really get rid of and my campaign is in a nordic setting. Any ideas?

The Spirit of the Land and Elemental Weirds from MM2 might be worth looking into.

Also remember that normal elementals, while not especially bright, can still take class levels.
