Hi there,

I'm trying to design an advanced winter wolf (HD 18) by following the advices given in the Monster Manual. I got it all set up except for the Breath Weapon and the Freezing Bite supernatural abilities.

Are these abilities increases in much the same way physical damage is increased. Such as d6 becoming d8. I found out that the Reflex save DC for the breath weapon would be 24 for a 18 Hit Dice winter wolf. Do I have to keep 4d6 as its damage?

Thanks

You're the GM. You don't "have" to do anything.

According to the RAW, breath weapon damage stays the same. Stupid, I say. A 6-HD winter wold deals 4d6 breath weapon and 1d6 cold on a bite. I'd extrapolate that to: 18 HD, 12d6 breath, 4d6 bite.

Make it what you think it should be. Never let the rules push you around.

Thank you for the answer, I'll just do that :)

Before you run off, know that you are drastically increasing the WW's CR by upping its breath weapon and freezing bite, which are not covered by the standard CR increases for HD. The saves go up, but that is it. By going about the advancement in your own way, you have to playtest it carefully to determine its real CR. A lot more work, just so you know. You can improve the breath weapon by using some of all those feats you added (which are already encapsulated in the suggested CR increase). Ability Focus and a variety of breath feats usually used for dragons could be appropriate.

Indeed, a good alternative if I do not want to get a CR too high. Thanks for the advice.
